What are people thinking so far?

Hopeful201 · 20/03/2020 17:34

I think he comes across well. I think there is only so much he can do, we can't expect 100% cover, we all have to cut back to see this through. Even BJ seems fairly ok today (am I ill?!)

babydinos · 20/03/2020 17:34

I think Rishi is absolutely brilliant. It goes without saying it's an extremely shit time for all, but I think we'd be absolutely fucked without him.

LoudBatPerson · 20/03/2020 17:35

@greysparkles - That is not what was said. It was making adjustments to make housing allowance actually cover the costs of more market-rate properties, not paying 30% of the rent.

Currently, maximum local housing allowance doesn't actually have to match the cost of renting a house in the area. This new rule means the maximum housing allowance would be enough to cover the full rent for at least 30% of the market rate properties in the local area.

Bertie1977 · 20/03/2020 17:35

Not great for the self employed. When work dries up and down several £000s a month, no sign of 80% payment?! Just great....

unhappyclap · 20/03/2020 17:35

I'm just thinking about if i lost 20% of my income, it would have a significant affect on my household. To those that will get the 80% of course it's better than nothing, I hope some employers may be able to top it up.

Saying all of that, if we have to stay indoors we will be spending less money anyways come to think of it.

Peapod29 · 20/03/2020 17:36

What about self employed?!!!!! I’m 100% certain to lose all my work !

shartsi · 20/03/2020 17:37

I am impressed.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/03/2020 17:37

bertie mine has dried up And is already zero. I’m a childminder and forced closed.

Parkandride · 20/03/2020 17:37

How on earth are people disappointed by 80% of income??
You wouldn't be commuting or going anywhere to spend money. It's very generous

Amibeingunr · 20/03/2020 17:37

Is the universal credit increase for workers only or people who are solely on benefits aswell?

DianaT1969 · 20/03/2020 17:38

80% wages is excellent. As long as zero hours contract employees get a fair amount.
It appears that self-employed who rent privately will get 30% of the market rate covered only, so they'll need to find the other 70% and they'll get around £480 per month UC which needs to cover utilities, council tax, food and any debt repayment they may have. Hmmm

unhappyclap · 20/03/2020 17:38

What Boris has said about "considerate of others" in reference to shopping, it obviously isn't working. Dettol is being sold for £20, toilet roll for a tenner, queues goign around huge Tesxo Extras, they need to start enforcing new rules. Especially ones that will allow the edlerly and vulnerable to access food!

NameChangeNugget · 20/03/2020 17:38

Really impressed.

TabbyStar · 20/03/2020 17:38

V disappointing for self employed.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2020 17:39

No idea how it will work but agree he will be PM one day. He inspires more confidence than twat Boris.

unhappyclap · 20/03/2020 17:39

@Parkandride great point actually. I am changing my mind from my initial post on this.

OP posts:
Dramadrama · 20/03/2020 17:39

Disappointed about the 80% wages that was mentioned

Jeez.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 20/03/2020 17:39

80% was more than i was expecting

kingkuta · 20/03/2020 17:40

How on earth are people disappointed by 80% of income??

Exactly this. Mind boggling.

MyopiaUtopia · 20/03/2020 17:40

Greysparkles it doesnt mean 30% of your rent cost, it means LHAs will go up to match the private rental amounts asked by the lowest 30% of the properties in your area. Which considering in my town you can get 0 private rental properties within the LHA rates, it should mean quite a bit of increase in the amount you get.

Eg. If my area's 2 bed LHA is £400pcm but the cheapest 30% of private rents for 2beds in my area are available at an average £550 then the LHA will go up to match this

Very complicated but I think that's what this means.

middleager · 20/03/2020 17:40

I have far more faith in him than current PM.

Dramadrama · 20/03/2020 17:40

Self-employed also won’t have to pay tax until 2021–deferred payments.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2020 17:41

I’ll be interested to see the small print of the wages being paid thing. Dd works 8 hours a week, lives at home. I imagine she won’t get paid anything and if I’m honest I can see their point if they don’t pay her. She only has the money for going out and clothes. Not for a roof over her head.

fivesecondrule · 20/03/2020 17:41

I think he's brilliant and I'm self employed.

WisestIsShe · 20/03/2020 17:42

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat I'm in exactly the same position. Really let down.
