What are people thinking so far?

OP posts:
ohdoriswheresthesalad · 20/03/2020 17:42

So what about people on zero hour contracts?
I'm in care and work 30 hours a week - £260 a week. I'm in self isolation for 2 weeks so that entitles me to £94.50 a week!

VivaLeBeaver · 20/03/2020 17:42

I’m worried the country will go bankrupt. How long can the govt fund this?

Pomegranatepompom · 20/03/2020 17:42

It’s really generous.
I’m an nhs worker, I’m wondering what they will do to help us. I pay a lot of money to commute to London. It feels like we’re being overlooked. I know people will say we’re lucky to have a job but you won’t believe the amount of stress I’m under for little over 1k monthly once paid train/parking/petrol & childcare. How will front line staff be acknowledged? We won’t be - there be money for us and people will think are are unreasonable to ask I expect.

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/03/2020 17:42

Sunak is Boris’ mouthpiece. They could have gone further by also giving cash directly to every working / self-employed individual.

Curlyshabtree · 20/03/2020 17:42

I got laid off today - seems i’m too late for the govt to pay 80% of my wages.... not sure....

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/03/2020 17:42

Self-employed also won’t have to pay tax until 2021–deferred payments.

You mean he’s not asking for our tax on account? Yes very generous. Hmm

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 17:43

My dad is a self employed London Black Taxi driver. He's nearly 60 years of age and has been working 18 hour days to scrape whatever money that he can.
They've now effectively closed all of London.

He didn't want to give up work, he was happy to keep working.

Now his only recompense is to apply for UC? Which Rishi has so generously upped by £1000/per year
What the fuck?
My dad earned decent money most of the time and now has to pay rent, bills and food that were easily managed on his normal wage by UC.

They've shafted the self-employed unbelievably, those in work still get up to 80% of their wages to either work from home or sit at home doing fuck all.
Self-employed? Nah.

willowpatterns · 20/03/2020 17:44

Disappointed about the 80% wages that was mentioned

Well, if you have a magic money tree in your garden, perhaps it's time to let the Chancellor know about it.

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 17:44

@Greysparkles I know! 30%!! It's fuck all!

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 20/03/2020 17:44

We rent as well!

fivesecondrule · 20/03/2020 17:44

I'm self employed and my DH is PAYE. I'm sure in next years budget he will be hit harder than I will be

TabbyStar · 20/03/2020 17:45

Self-employed also won’t have to pay tax until 2021–deferred payments.

How much tax do you pay on no income? Confused

Pomegranatepompom · 20/03/2020 17:45

I think that’s why upset - there’s such a difference between people being paid to sit at home and people who absolutely need to work in very difficult environments- making themselves and their families vulnerable.

LoudBatPerson · 20/03/2020 17:45

Everyone -- IT IS NOT JUST 30% OF RENT THAT WILL BE PAID.

I have explained up thread what was said and meant as has another poster.

Please do not scare people that only 30% of rents will be paid.

Meruem · 20/03/2020 17:45

I wonder though where bedroom tax comes in this. I have one more bedroom than I need. Has been fine because I’ve worked all along (therefore paid all my own rent) but now I might lose my job and my UC forecast left me £25 a week to live on after rent paid, ok maybe now £45 a week? But if I am still impacted by bedroom tax then £45 a week is the most I will get for all other living costs.

defthand · 20/03/2020 17:46

I thought the end of his speech, imploring us to have compassion and come through this together, was very moving.

Portabella24 · 20/03/2020 17:47

I am self employed. I don't have employees and work from a virtual office. My income has dropped 65% this month and is about 10% of what it was this time last year.
The only positive I took was that the tax due in July 2020 is now only payable in January 2021 (although I will have the self assessment due then too?)
I have business loans (I am in my third year as a sole trader), credit card debt, a mortgage and all the normal bills. I can't even get employment now to tide me over. Basically I'm totally fucked.

Laniakea · 20/03/2020 17:48

The payment scheme will be backdated to March 1

BovaryX · 20/03/2020 17:48

How much would I like? More than fucking 30%. What's that going to do?! If I'm out of work what help is 30%

This is an unprecedented global pandemic. The economic casualties will be legion. Travel and tourism across the globe has ground to a halt. There is carnage on the stock market, the oil price is sinking, ports are closed, borders are closed. Across the planet. What precisely do you expect the government to do? They have cranked up the printing press and are firehosing billions.

EightNineTen · 20/03/2020 17:48

I think for self employed it's UC at SSP rates, not that you have to be ill to get it. It has no income bar so if you're still managing to make money you'll get £94 extra.

My income was fairly low anyway (this year was the year I was going to expand!) so it helps me, I just don't see how it helps the self employed who weren't pretty penniless in the first place, though!

Dramadrama · 20/03/2020 17:49

How much tax do you pay on no income?

Presumably like me you are due to pay some in July for last year and presumably you have put this aside?

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 17:49

The tax-deferral means sod all if you're not earning anything!!

I feel sick. I really do. I just spoke to my dad and he sounds shell-shocked.

Those of you complaining about only getting 80% wages need to give their fucking heads a wobble.
The disparity is dreadful.

DianaT1969 · 20/03/2020 17:49

As a self-employed person I could cry. I cannot pay my council tax, bills, food and part-rent on UC of around £480 per month. Every self employed person has just been thrown under the poverty bus.

unhappyclap · 20/03/2020 17:49

@willowpatterns changed my thoughts on this and explained in the thread.

Considering no/less travel costs, socialising etc...this is reasonable.

I will let you (and the Chancellor) know if I find the money tree in my non-existent garden. Grin

OP posts:
Laniakea · 20/03/2020 17:50

Frances O’Grady, the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress.

She said the chancellor had shown “real leadership” and called the measures announced “a breakthrough”.

We’re glad he’s listened to unions and taken vital steps to support working families. Employers can now be confident they’ll be able to pay their wage bills. They must urgently reassure staff that their jobs are safe."

But yes be disappointed at 80%. Greedy fuckers.
