What are people thinking so far?

80% of your wage for staying at home, looking after your children if you have any but not having to spend as much money - sounds quite good to me. I will be juggling work and looking after 2 children - we are all affected by this.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/03/2020 17:51

No idea what else some people want

Rent and mortgage holiday for 3 months

Increases in UC and WTC

HMRC to work out 80% of any PAYE and everyone who is employed 0 hours or otherwise will get that if their employer acts

Self employed, including me, to get tax delay and SSP/ UC type payments

All to be reviewed as necessary

And I'm bound to have missed something.

I've already lost about £3k and won't have any chance of getting it back, that work won't be replaced. That's my issue. I have to work it out, I chose to be self employed and not to take out various insurances.

It's shit... But there's fuck all else they can do... unless someone knows any better.

So yes, armchair critics, tell us...

Elizadoeslittle19 · 20/03/2020 17:51

Absolutely shocking for the self employed. SSP.... Yet PAYE get 80% wages. I wouldn't have minded minimum wage every week for the self employed. But NOTHING... Good god we can't live on my income alone. I'm PAYE.

unhappyclap · 20/03/2020 17:52

I WILL SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE BACK...I WAS WRONG TO SAY I WAS DISAPPOINTED AT 80%

...and on that note...we move...

I feel they've made sensible decisions and that's coming from someone who is self employed, so certainly not benefitting much.
They need to implement a system that they can afford and that can't be abused, it's no easy task.

Newjez · 20/03/2020 17:53

@VivaLeBeaver

The country can't go bankrupt, they've found the magic money forest!!!

Seriously though, the country can print as many pounds as they like. We could have a run on the pound, but as every other country is in the same position that is unlikely.

This may even be the cheaper option. The alternative is a credit crunch with debt cascading up until the banks eventually fail. With every cascade there will be lots more costs added. This could save us money.

Plus not all the promises were freebies. The vat was a deferal.

Add to that that the crown can now borrow at zero interest rates.

I'm not a Boris fan, but I think they have moved in the right direction.

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 17:53

£2000 for the employees to either work from home or sit there doing sweet fuck all.

£400 odd a month for the self-employed who're in the exact same position as the employees through no fault of their own.

If anyone thinks this is fair/ok then please explain to me your reasoning.

It's despicable.

EightNineTen · 20/03/2020 17:54

I think the self employed aspect will need to be rethought.

Just like the part where the loan interest for businesses wasn't paid for 6 months on Monday, and now by Friday it's 12 months.

Pomegranatepompom · 20/03/2020 17:54

Exactly. 80% to stay home, very lucky indeed.

Portabella24 · 20/03/2020 17:54

The compassion is outstanding
Does your insurance pay because mine certainly doesn't.
Glad you're ok though.
Yes I know better - UBI. No bureaucracy, no audits, no cheating the system.

Iamthewombat · 20/03/2020 17:54

I thought he spoke well.

They could have gone further by also giving cash directly to every working / self-employed individual.

Oh come off it! I don’t need ‘cash direct from the government’. I’d sooner it was spent on supporting jobs and businesses. What would handing cash to well-paid people in secure jobs, or wealthy self-employed people, achieve?

Greysparkles · 20/03/2020 17:55

Rent and mortgage holiday for 3 months

There is no rent holiday.
Basically self employed renters like me just have to get into a fuck ton of debt to just survive.
Whilst mortgaged employed people get a 3 month mortgage freeze and 80% wage.

Babbas · 20/03/2020 17:55

80% is brilliant and should tide over people for the next 3 months at least. I can't believe people are complaining. My dh is self employed and has earnt nothing this month so we are effectively on 1 wage.

As for paying nhs workers a bonus or more, I can't see this happening. If it does, what about teachers who are now providing free childcare for all key workers? What about supermarket workers, delivery drivers, cleaners etc etc.

Redcrayons · 20/03/2020 17:56

As an employee it may benefit me. My employer is saying that we may have to take a 20% pay cut next month anyway.

StandUpStraight · 20/03/2020 17:56

This is an unprecedented global pandemic. The economic casualties will be legion. Travel and tourism across the globe has ground to a halt. There is carnage on the stock market, the oil price is sinking, ports are closed, borders are closed. Across the planet. What precisely do you expect the government to do? They have cranked up the printing press and are firehosing billions.

This. Exactly this. I am astounded by anyone who thinks this government isn’t doing everything they can. This package is incredibly generous. Some of you need to grow up.

Caramel78 · 20/03/2020 17:57

I’m sure the self employed aspects are going to come under huge criticism and he’ll have to rethink quickly what extra help he can give us.

Dagnabit · 20/03/2020 17:57

@Meruem - I would see if you can apply discretionary housing payment from your local council. Ours covers the bedroom tax for a variety of people with different circumstances so you may just qualify. Our rule is that you have to be in receipt of housing benefit or housing cost element of UC.

Greysparkles · 20/03/2020 17:58

Yes. Because growing up will help me no go bankrupt and starve Hmm

Hoppinggreen · 20/03/2020 17:58

S employed here
I have 2 contracts currently, one has said they are happy to keep me but they have no work currently (absolutely true due to the nature of their business) they owe me just over £1000, which I will get
The other lot have said they aren’t doing my type of work anymore, fair enough but that they won’t be paying me what they owe (about £2000) and if I want it I will have to take it to the small claims court. I’m sure it’s all tied up legally but the owner is a millionaire ex Etonian so I’m sure he could pay if he wanted. He lured some of my fellow freelancers away from more secure jobs with his promises and lies
Luckily DH is and will continue to earn money but if he didn’t we would have no income at all - not even 80% of it

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/03/2020 17:58

This package is incredibly generous

It’s generous to some people..... but not all. And that’s unfair. We should take equal hardship.

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 17:59

Wow it's far more than I ever expected. I assuming the 2.5k cap is pre tax & NI?

BovaryX · 20/03/2020 17:59

This. Exactly this. I am astounded by anyone who thinks this government isn’t doing everything they can. This package is incredibly generous. Some of you need to grow up

Precisely. The reaction of some is so profoundly parochial it's fucking pathetic And I never swear.

LoudBatPerson · 20/03/2020 17:59

As an employee it may benefit me. My employer is saying that we may have to take a 20% pay cut next month anyway.

It will only be for those employees having to stay at home as no work to do, its in place of just laying people off. Anyone still doing their jobs as normal, will be left to negotiate with their companies in regards to pay cuts etc,

If this does apply to you, to keep with the spirit of the chancellor's announcement I would hope your company would then keep you on full pay, as they will only have to pay 20% (the 80% coming from HRMC).

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/03/2020 17:59

There is an effective rent holiday, HA announced for their tenants, landlords will get the mortgage holiday, also confirmed, and expected to pass that on; tenants protected from eviction due to non payment of rent.

Renters are effectively in the same position as those with a mortgage.

I work in the letting industry and have been following trade press closely.

DianaT1969 · 20/03/2020 18:00

Why didn't any of the journalists pick up that there was f**k all support for the self-employed??
Really pleased for all my friends and family who are PAYE.
3 months at home with no money worries. Self-employed should form orderly queues at food banks from tomorrow.
