Destroying the economy for what? We need to lockdown!!

At the moment I feel like we are only half heartedly locking down. People are out and about - but not listening.

In the meantime we’ve taken kids out and people are losing their jobs! What needs to happen is the government needs to ENFORCE the lockdown to make all the others measures worth it - we seem to be destroying our economy for the sake of it at the moment because very few people are social distancing or taking this seriously.

I completely wholeheartedly agree.

Businesses will tank, working parents will lose their income, children miss out on education.

Meanwhile most people are just carrying on as normal.

It's fucked up.

Taddda · 20/03/2020 11:21

The pensioners seem to be out in their droves though.....???!!!!

lubeybooby · 20/03/2020 11:21

fully agree - it's already too late to avoid overwheming ICU in a couple of weeks. Once ICU in London is already fucked. But the least we could do is fully lockdown right now and avoid making it even worse. Our poor NHS

Cornettoninja · 20/03/2020 11:23

Absolutely. Shame the government is too chicken shit to admit this and get serious.

Changedmyname84 · 20/03/2020 11:25

It’s making me so mad and I don’t know how to make people take things seriously!!!

Agree with this. My DH is a HCP and can't keep the over 70s at home. They have tried phone triaging and cancelling outine apps etc etc

He thinks far too much emphasis had bern put on quantity of life rather than quality. A lot of elderly patients (part 80 plus) have says they feel their days are limited anyway so would rather keep going out etc

He thinks a central reguster should hsve been set up allowing over 70s to make informed decisions about isolating, with the caveat that they would accept not receiving intensive secondary care if needs be - so no families clamouring for a ventilator.

We have crashed the economy and deprived a generation of children of a significant period of education - his practice has a big number of at risk children who will really suffer due to this. He is also worried about the effect on the mental health of parents who will be at home trying to home educate and work and panicking about finances for a significant period of time. He's not convinced that protecting the lives of over 70s knowing that they may chose not to self isolate was should have been a key driver in this. Most of his patients who are younger with known health care issues have been much more sensible with self isolating and of course should receive all necessary help and support.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 20/03/2020 11:28

Oh and he's certainly not the only HCP we know who thinks this!

Taddda · 20/03/2020 11:31

It will take a lockdown and a visible army presence....!

Boris needs to step up and stop making 'suggestions'....its like they want us to all get it (herd immunity plan still in action.....!?)-

But please wash your hands, if you can, if it's not too inconvenient.....Hmm

Changedmyname84 · 20/03/2020 11:33

I’m just overwhelmed with this response. Either we lockdown or we don’t. I am at a loss as to how we will come out of this and I do believe some of the worst decisions in history have been made.

‘This response’ being the government’s response

AgentCooper · 20/03/2020 11:34

Boris needs to fucking go after this.

OhMy05 · 20/03/2020 11:36

Agree we need a lockdown.
I went to local shop earlier and saw an elderly woman on a mobility scooter driving one handed because she was smoking. Maybe she’s said ‘sod it’ and decided whatever will be will be.

DontCallMeShitley · 20/03/2020 11:37

The pensioners seem to be out in their droves though.....???!!!!

No pensioners in sight here, but plenty of screaming children and parents in the streets.

FlauntingLooRolls · 20/03/2020 11:39

I'm gobsmacked at how blase` many people are being. I run a social meet-up group and took the decision last week to cancel all planned events for the next 3 months. Most members agree with my decision. I've just checked and other local groups seem to be business as usual! One walking group, the leader put up a post saying he'd had a horrible message from a member saying he was irresponsible for not cancelling, and other members were voicing their support for the group leader and writing the protester off as horrible and rude!? I think the only answer is forced lock-down.

Sunshinedaffodil · 20/03/2020 11:43

I don’t want a lock down. Myself and two kids are strictly saying in the house and garden. My dgm has been self isolating for the past two weeks already.

I don’t want to forced to stay in my house only allowed out with a pass. I’m doing what the government has told me to do. I can’t account for other people and want my freedom thanks

fivesecondrule · 20/03/2020 11:45

Honestly 100% agree. I've just come back from my grandparents house (to drop cards through door and wave to them through the window) and I'm just completely dumfounded. Garden centre car park full- plenty of over 70s in car park. Local cafe full. Tim Martin Wetherspoons boss saying there is no reason to shut the pubs. Meanwhile most kids can't get an education, key workers children are going to new schools so their parents can keep the country afloat, people are being made redundant and facing financial crisis. I makes no sense what so ever!

LoveIsLovely · 20/03/2020 11:48

"I don’t want to forced to stay in my house only allowed out with a pass. I’m doing what the government has told me to do. I can’t account for other people and want my freedom thanks"

Well since people have proven they're too irresponsible to follow advice, I doubt you'll get what you want

Changedmyname84 · 20/03/2020 11:50

"I don’t want to forced to stay in my house only allowed out with a pass. I’m doing what the government has told me to do. I can’t account for other people and want my freedom thanks"

Why? You’re doing what you need to do why value your freedom? It’s others that need to do what you are doing via a lockdown

i'm in non food retail....they are shopping with us in droves. they dont care

oldwhyno · 20/03/2020 11:53

People will always react differently to things. People's behavior in response to these measures will fit a typical standard distribution bell curve. Some people under reacting and some overreacting. The vast majority will be roughly in the middle. The scientists factor this into their modeling. And the government factor it into their messaging, trying to tread the line between causing panic and triggering the right behavioral response.

Take a deep breath and relax.

ginghamstarfish · 20/03/2020 11:59

Agree with PPs, until it is actually banned there's nothing much to be done, there are always selfish idiots in every age group. Yes, you might be 80+ and feel you have nothing to lose, but there are many others you may infect, and you should sign a form to say you will NOT be taking up valuable hospital bed/ventilators should you fall ill with CV.

Changedmyname84 · 20/03/2020 11:59

I am sorry! I just feel at a loss - we have PTs locally organising distance non contact sessions in a park. Or saying they’ll come to the house. We’re not allowing any outsiders in the house - we will look to drive out into the country for walks. I’m going to put my phone away now and do some YouTube exercises!

OP posts:
MLMsuperfan · 20/03/2020 12:00

We should take to the streets.

Jaxhog · 20/03/2020 12:01

Please don't blame any particular group. There are stupid, selfish people of all ages. We ALL need to follow the government's guidelines to get through this.

Taddda · 20/03/2020 12:03

@DontCallMeShitley Well you obviously live no where near my city-

As for the 'plenty of parents with their screaming kids' though, I'll give you an example of one poor mum who MIL spotted during 'Silver hour' at the Supermarket getting screamed at by a woman in her 80's (presumed by MIL), for having the 'fucking nerve!' to shop during 'her time'.

The Mum with her two small (screaming Hmm ) children tried to very calmly explain she had been trying to get formula for two days and was pregnant and couldn't get a home delivery....wasn't good enough for the woman who further went on to throw her basket in outrage and storm out of the shop, minus her shopping....leaving the mum apologising in tears to the other shoppers and staff...

Oh, and the cafe at the end of my street is now full of pensioners having their weekly Friday meet up-

No 'screaming' kids seen as yet....
