I've seen this a lot on a few threads, "Well you're the one who signed up to be a nurse"

But I didn't sign up to be discharging patients home before they are ready, without proper support at home.
I didn't sign up to be sending patients home to likely die because their operation has been cancelled or postponed.
I didn't sign up to be preparing to turn the elderly away in favour of younger patients who are just as sick.
I didn't sign up to not be properly protected at work by not having the right equipment.
I didn't sign up to be given poor training on how to vent a patient and be expected to work outside my competency.
I didn't sign up to leave my patients soaked in urine for too long because we're so short staffed and there are sicker patients to deal with.
I didn't sign up to be not supported by managers.
I didn't sign up to have relatives say their last goodbyes to their loved ones over the phone.
I didn't sign up for this.
I signed up to properly care for my patients safely and competently, and now that's not possible.

Don't tell me I signed up for this.

I don't even know why I'm posting this.
I am tired and I am broken knowing that I am letting my patients and their families down, but I can't leave as it'll just be worse for those patients.

We're doing our best in a stressful situation, please take social distancing and isolation seriously, as it's only going to get worse.

From a very tired and broken nurse Flowers

So unfair that you have to work like that.

I know a bit of what you must be facing, but from the other side.

It's incredible that we have allowed our country to get in this state. It's a scandal.

Vebrithien · 20/03/2020 00:37

Walk on, in the knowledge that there are millions of people who are behind you, holding you and yours in their hearts, thoughts and prayers.

No, you didn't sign up for this. No, you can't do all you would wish to do.

But when all hell has broken loose, you are one of those who has stood up and been counted, and your story will be told for years to come.

Thank-you.

TaterWaffle · 20/03/2020 00:44

Thank you, you are amazing. Please keep on keeping on if you can.

hankyspanky · 20/03/2020 00:50

@Whentheleavesfalldown Flowers Wine Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

For the 6% who voted YABU, I object to having to share the same air as you Angry Cunts.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 20/03/2020 01:22

I didn't sign up to have relatives say their last goodbyes to their loved ones over the phone.

Heartbreaking. Sad

OP,
Please know that you (and your colleagues) are massively appreciated and admired.

Family member a nurse, so am only too aware of what you're all up against in 'normal' times: it takes very special personal qualities to do what you do.

I'd urge everyone wanting to show support to our nurses to sign Dr Rebecca McCauley's online petition, supporting all NHS frontliners to get priority Covid-19 tested.
(In the middle of a health crisis, it's shameful that a Dr even needs to petition for such an essential).

Thank you for everything you are doing. Without you we’d be lost. You didn’t sign up for this but I am so grateful to you for doing it anyway Flowers

StoppinBy · 20/03/2020 01:28

I can't believe anyone would say that....shit heads!

I for one am very grateful for each of you that shows up to a job that right now I would be terrified to do.

Thank you all.

thequeenandherguurrllls · 20/03/2020 01:32

I don't normally comment on stuff, more of a lurker. But I just want to say thank you for everything, the hours you give the life you give up. The sacrifices you make to your own family. There never will be enough thank you's, enough love, enough gratitude. What you're doing is truly amazing, I will be forever grateful and completely in awe that you can do this. Look after yourself and your family and from the bottom of my heart i thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

madcatladyforever · 20/03/2020 01:36

We are seeing loads of patients from the community everyday and have no protective equipment whatsoever. Gloves and aprons that's it. Not even masks. These are people who take no precautions and swan about doing whatever they want everyday. I didn't sign up to die.

Astella22 · 20/03/2020 01:37

Vent away my love. We are all here for you. Thank you for what u are doing for us all. Think on any small positive u can and try not to dwell on what’s out of your control.

Holothane · 20/03/2020 01:45

Thank god for you OP. THANK YOU for everything you are doing.
It's shite, no you did not sign up for this horrific situation, and god damnit i support every single rant you need to get you through.

Well done Flowers Cake Flowers

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/03/2020 01:53

When all this is done, as a nation we really need to recognise what we owe all our medics and value them accordingly.

cuparfull · 20/03/2020 01:57

I'm sorry but be reassured we are verrrrry grateful for all you do.
You sound young and I don't say that disparagingly, just as someone who has nursed for many years, now retired and has the thick skin of experience.
These are tough times and nobody is going to hold you to account for doing your level best in this most extraordinary situation..... even if you have to work outside your competency and vent poorly patients if needed .
You do what you have to do.... but accept that people will die through no fault of your own.
You didn't sign up for this but you are our last line of defence, and we honour you!!
Just be reassured that if you fall ill, its hopefully likely to be mildly and if not then your colleagues will prioritise your care above others.
Hang in there and support each other. Just do your best thats all we can ever ask of you and don't beat yourself up. Flowers

booearing · 20/03/2020 02:40

No you didn’t sign up for this
But a big thank you to everyone of you for the work that you are doing. Flowers

Giggorata · 20/03/2020 05:47

Adding my heartfelt thanks to you and the other heroes in the NHS. 💐 🙏

PerfectParrot · 20/03/2020 05:51

No, you didn't sign up for this. Thank you for continuing to do everything you can x

PumpkinPie2016 · 20/03/2020 06:03

I'm so sorry that you and your colleagues are going through this. My Nana has been in hospital for the last week (not coronavirus) and you can see how stretched the staff are.

Despite them being so stretched, without exception, every single member of staff has been exemplary. Kind, caring anf supportive to both my Nana and me through a very difficult time.

I will be eternally grateful to each and every one of them.

Please know that the very vast majority of people appreciate our nurses/doctors/paramedics/care assistants.

It’s a great pity that the cowardly 6% who voted YABU don’t have the courage of their convictions and post a comment to justify their vote. Instead they hind behind the anonymity of a vote button. Craven fucking scum.

speakout · 20/03/2020 06:09

What you do is appreciated beyond measure OP.

It must be so overwhelming, but everything you do is making a difference. X Stay strong.

VadenuRewetje · 20/03/2020 06:13

Whoever says that callous phrase in the first line of your OP is not a good person.

Thank you so much for taking the brunt of this awful situation. I can't imagine the strength it must take to get through the days.

Your patients may not be getting everything you want to be able to give them, but whatever you are managing is making it better than it might have been without you. I know it must be heartbreaking to feel you are letting them down but you are not - you are doing the best you can. Thank you.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/03/2020 06:16

You are amazing thank you
