I've seen this a lot on a few threads, "Well you're the one who signed up to be a nurse"

But I didn't sign up to be discharging patients home before they are ready, without proper support at home.
I didn't sign up to be sending patients home to likely die because their operation has been cancelled or postponed.
I didn't sign up to be preparing to turn the elderly away in favour of younger patients who are just as sick.
I didn't sign up to not be properly protected at work by not having the right equipment.
I didn't sign up to be given poor training on how to vent a patient and be expected to work outside my competency.
I didn't sign up to leave my patients soaked in urine for too long because we're so short staffed and there are sicker patients to deal with.
I didn't sign up to be not supported by managers.
I didn't sign up to have relatives say their last goodbyes to their loved ones over the phone.
I didn't sign up for this.
I signed up to properly care for my patients safely and competently, and now that's not possible.

Don't tell me I signed up for this.

I don't even know why I'm posting this.
I am tired and I am broken knowing that I am letting my patients and their families down, but I can't leave as it'll just be worse for those patients.

We're doing our best in a stressful situation, please take social distancing and isolation seriously, as it's only going to get worse.

From a very tired and broken nurse Flowers

Flowers Thank you
gillybombilly · 19/03/2020 23:13

We are all behind you - be proud of everything that can do. Your patients are more grateful and thankful than you will ever know Star

acatcalledjohn · 19/03/2020 23:13

If we didn't have people like you we'd be more fucked than we are.

You are fabulous.

Thank you. Thanks

FleecyMoo · 19/03/2020 23:14

I just want to thank you and your colleagues for what you do and hope that you can find the strength to keep on doing it in these terrible times x

Miajk · 19/03/2020 23:16

OP you are doing an incredible job! Without you and your colleagues the world would literally fall apart.

You are doing so much, and you care. And I'm sure every single patient is grateful for that. I am so grateful for the tireless, thankless efforts of the NHS.

Personally, thank you for signing up for a job that wasn't supposed to be as difficult as it is right now, and then keeping at doing your best as things get harder. Absolute hero!

Icare1234 · 19/03/2020 23:16

Flowers thank you

todayisnottuesday · 19/03/2020 23:16

So many lovely comments on here have made all the difference Flowers

Agreed, @OP - none off us signed up for this. We wanted to care for people and make a difference, but we also wanted the resources to be able to do so. That should not have been too much to ask really.

StrangeLookingParasite · 19/03/2020 23:17

Who the hell are the ARSES who voted YABU? The same shitheads who come out with ""Well you're the one who signed up to be a nurse"" garbage, I guess.

I don't know how people can say these things to you. You do a job I could never, never do (and both my sisters are nurses; I got asked a lot if I was going to be a nurse too)

I wish I could give you enough resources, enough rest, time for all your patients...I wish people appreciated you more, they really, really should.

giggly · 19/03/2020 23:18

As another nurse I have the additional stress of having to find non existing childcare as we are being given one day to “sort out childcare” perhaps this should have been put in place for all essential workers before the schools shut. I have absolutely no one to watch my dc on Monday. So what do? care for my patients or take sick leave to watch my children. No breakfast clubs or after school available as yet. Unfucking believable. The stress I am experiencing today is unmanageable. I didn’t sign up for this.

middleager · 19/03/2020 23:20

Thank you.
This country owes you a debt.
And recognition
And a pay risr
And investment to build a health service that's fit for purpose.

I'm so sorry that it has come to this Flowers

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/03/2020 23:20

NHS but not in Nursing .

Also don't forget the extra cleaning being done by staff ( usual cleaning was done up till now but now it's stepped . )
The chair , the unit tops, the control for the chair , the door handles .
Every patient .

And ......filling in all the computerised records .
Letters ( pnts aren't able to see their GP so often I email , then the GP has the details ) more and more letters.

And another section of Data to fill in and asking/documenting about CV symptoms .

Plus not knowing exactly when the shit will hit the pan .

dontaskformedicaladviceonmn · 19/03/2020 23:21

I’m posting a link to this thread on all the ‘but I can meet my friend for coffee/get my nails done/go out to dinner....can’t I?” threads I can find.

I can only hope it will all only be half as bad as we fear. So sorry for what you and your colleagues are being put through Flowers Wine

Bella2020 · 19/03/2020 23:21

This thread has been quite an eye opener for me. Naively, I didnt realise how bad the situation in our hospitals is already. Thank you, OP and all NHS staff, for all you're doing.

Etinox · 19/03/2020 23:22

@Whentheleavesfalldown
Thank you Flowers

MrsP2015 · 19/03/2020 23:22

You nurses and health carers are doing an amazing job.
What is happening now is beyond anyone's belief of possibility.
I sincerely hope your efforts are all recognised by some kind of financial bonus or extra paid leave as you bloody deserve it.

Also to mention there are so many other professions which are unrecognised for the work they are putting in.

Thank you all.

StinkyWizzleteets · 19/03/2020 23:22

I just want to thank you and your colleagues for all that you do. I know how scared you are as my OH comes home terrified for his patients, his colleagues and himself. You are not paid enough for what they expect you to do. I sincerely hope you and your NHS colleagues get the recognition you deserve because you do deserve it and more. You deserve thanks and praise, hell, you deserve worship. From many your work does not go unnoticed. The universe will reward you (or some such hippy shit)

TeaAndDarkToast · 19/03/2020 23:23

Thank you so very much because I am truly grateful for all the very hard work and soul you put into your work. Where would we be without you?

It's not much consolation but NHS staff can get a free Dominos pizza on Friday 20th when you bring your id.

It's horrible to read how people are turning on one another at the moment. The young blaming the old, the old castigating the young. Nurses, doctors and teachers pilloried. I personally have a lot to thank the NHS for, most of you nurses, doctors and others. Thank you for all you do. Please don't take any notice of the stupid remarks. Take care.

pooiepooie25 · 19/03/2020 23:26

You didn't. My heart goes out to you and your colleagues. You are amazing at the best of times- and now... there are no words to say how much you are appreciated.

Tearingmyhairoutstill · 19/03/2020 23:26

Thank you - you’re amazing

Hadenoughofitall441 · 19/03/2020 23:26

No one signed up for this... some people are unbelievable, I have issues with some of ways in which the nhs deals with stuff but never with doctors or nurses, I wish more people had respect for you guys.

TinyGirl1 · 19/03/2020 23:27

Whenever I have seen a nurse , I have seen them as absolute heroes. I secretly admire you guys as if you are celebs . True heroes of society.

todayisnottuesday · 19/03/2020 23:27

Ooh! Thank you - I had missed that!
