I've seen this a lot on a few threads, "Well you're the one who signed up to be a nurse"

But I didn't sign up to be discharging patients home before they are ready, without proper support at home.
I didn't sign up to be sending patients home to likely die because their operation has been cancelled or postponed.
I didn't sign up to be preparing to turn the elderly away in favour of younger patients who are just as sick.
I didn't sign up to not be properly protected at work by not having the right equipment.
I didn't sign up to be given poor training on how to vent a patient and be expected to work outside my competency.
I didn't sign up to leave my patients soaked in urine for too long because we're so short staffed and there are sicker patients to deal with.
I didn't sign up to be not supported by managers.
I didn't sign up to have relatives say their last goodbyes to their loved ones over the phone.
I didn't sign up for this.
I signed up to properly care for my patients safely and competently, and now that's not possible.

Don't tell me I signed up for this.

I don't even know why I'm posting this.
I am tired and I am broken knowing that I am letting my patients and their families down, but I can't leave as it'll just be worse for those patients.

We're doing our best in a stressful situation, please take social distancing and isolation seriously, as it's only going to get worse.

From a very tired and broken nurse Flowers

Oh God you have no idea how much you are appreciated. My 21 year old son has stage 4 Lymphoma, and has spent most of the last 4 months in hospital. He was so ill they had to delay the start of chemotherapy because his body was just too weak to take it, and all the time the cancer was rapidly spreading. I have never been so afraid and the only thing that I could cling to is that the doctors and nurses who were looking after him were so bloody professional, kind, and competent, and I knew that they were going to do everything possible to save my sons life.

Yesterday he had to have a blood transfusion which happened to be done by a nurse who has been part of a team who have treated him for another health condition for quite a few years. DS1 was asleep and she said me to "we all love your son around here, he is so brave and never complains and I was gutted when I heard he had Lymphoma" and I knew she wasn't just saying that, these nurses really do care, despite the pressure they are under.

You are my hero.

Italianmeringuebuttercream · 21/03/2020 20:16

@Whentheleavesfalldown you are my hero

Zombiemum1946 · 21/03/2020 20:19

I'm an auxiliary and I'll be going back to work slap bang in the middle of the probable high point. I'm in outpatients and have no idea where I'll be redeployed. It's Scary as hell.

Rose87777 · 21/03/2020 20:21

Thank you from the very bottom of my heart OP. You are truly a superhero Flowers

Ashleigh404 · 21/03/2020 20:22

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You & other NHS staff are doing amazingly in such difficult circumstances.

Adoptionnewbie · 21/03/2020 20:43

I don’t know what people are saying ‘well you signed up to be a nurse’ but they are obviously morons so don’t listen to a word they are saying. Most of the population are fully appreciating what an amazing job you do and are so grateful to you. Forget the haters, they are probably the selfish a*holes stockpiling and leaving the vulnerable without food!!!

GrandmaCornwall · 21/03/2020 20:49

As the mum of a nurse I listen to the stories of difficult times and know it is getting worse. You are doing a fantastic job with poor resources and the general public very often don't appreciate it. Keep going, be strong and thank you for all of the hard work that you do. 💐 💐 💐

CW1976 · 21/03/2020 21:18

No one signed up for this.

It sounds like a comment from a person who wants to pass the buck.

Anything ANY of us can do to contribute is a real bonus.

Hippydoodledoo8 · 21/03/2020 21:20

Thankyou OP, I don’t have any other words Flowers

Forgottenwhatsleepis · 21/03/2020 21:22

Thank you OP, and to all your colleagues 💐

MisterMole · 21/03/2020 21:35

Thank You. I know how awesome nurses are. There are some nutters out there but most people treasure the NHS and its wonderful staff - one of the things that makes this country great 🤗🤗🤗

LeahWarburton · 21/03/2020 21:37

Just know that all you do is appreciated. Hospitals run on nurses. Without them, there would be no support for patients, or their families, at all. I know it's hard, and sometimes it feels like you're fighting a loosing battle. But you are valued. So thank you, for everything you do. Even if it doesn't feel like enough. Thank you.

MrsKypp · 21/03/2020 21:41

Lost for words really, but just wanted to say that nurses were already heros in my books, let alone now. Flowers

My thoughts are with the world's nurses xxx Flowers

The 'Great ' from Britain is totally eroded .
That's how I feel.

Rachel709 · 21/03/2020 22:14

What I hope after this the government starts funding the NHS and salaries properly.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 21/03/2020 22:18

OP you are a hero.

Your colleagues are hero's

This country is trying on you to get us through this.

Please stay, strong and stay well while the majority of us do our best to help you by following advice and obeying social distancing rules.

If every single nurse and doctor (actually fuck that, all key workers) don't get a bloody medal and a huge pay rise when this is all over them this will no longer be a country I'm proud to be a part of

Yasnbu you didn’t sign up for this. I’m sorry for you and all of your colleagues.

helpIhateclothesshopping · 22/03/2020 23:35

No you didn't sign up to this xx Thinking of you, I didn't sign up for that either, I work for the NHS and will likely be redeployed onto the wards to cover for HCSWs shortly as I won't be able to do some areas of my job and it is lower priority. We do what we have to do, we do it as best we can and one day we hope we may be fully appreciated. Hang in there x
