We are in MARCH!! 3 more months of what??? We ONLY had less than 2 weeks of cases going up. Will they continue to go up for 3 months???

A vaccine is a long way off. They're hoping by taking measures now to slow the number of cases, people needing hospital care will just trickle into hospitals, as opposed to flooding in. That will also get us through to the summer months where viruses don't live so easily, people are not crowded together pass g on infections, and importantly, the normal flu, pneumonia's, winter illnesses that fill hospital beds, will stop, so that those beds are available for corona cases. As soon as restrictions are lifted cases will jump up, but beds be available and testing to see who's sick and who's immune. I suspect 2020 is pretty much a wash out.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 21:52

If the time scale is shorter it makes more sense to completely suppress with a lock down instead of loads mingling around cafes /pubs / gyms.

MaddieElla · 19/03/2020 21:53

"UK not a priority for the vaccine"

Honestly. This site is so insulting to the UK. We are up there with the world leaders in scientific research. We are trialling tests which will detect antibodies soon, considering the short amount of time this virus has been about, that is phenomenal. We will share information/research/drugs/vaccine information with each other.

We are all in this together, science wise. As much as you lot love to assume the UK are scum, we are actually pretty amazing, along with the rest of the science world working day and night to beat this.

morriseysquif · 19/03/2020 21:53

I find it terrifying when I hear broadcaster on the radio surprised to find themselves lauding him as our PM for being serious about this, because his normal stance is baffoon.

Boris is out of his depth, you can see it in his eyes. His grave manner belies his utter terror at being at the helm.

wecanturnthetide · 19/03/2020 21:54

Please can everyone watch the Italy links I posted. I am not scaremongering, it is more that I was totally cavalier until I watched the first one - last Friday, and only because I had been told schools were closing and so thought it was time to find out more about it. People really do need to realise what is going on, take personal action and also act together to keep a rocket under Boris to make sure he is matching measures being taken in other countries which are working.

Mlou32 · 19/03/2020 21:54

"Will they continue to go up for 3 months???"

Yes. Absolutely and unequivocally yes. If people don't act in a socially responsible manner and take the PM and his medical advisors advice about hand washing, social distancing, non essential contact etc then it will continue to rise exponentially for the next 3 months at least.

In regards to what he meant by "turning the tide". I took that to mean what they've managed to do in other counties ie China; change it from a rapidly spreading illness, completely "turn the tide" around and slow its spread down dramatically. But again, this will only happen by following the advice that the government has given us. No ifs no buts.

daisypond · 19/03/2020 21:54

Of course trials are happening globally and there are some initial promising results. Whether we in the U.K. get the benefits is to be seen. We are not at the top of the queue by a long way. We are also a long way behind other countries in their handling of the disaster so far. We have half the number of Intensive care beds per head of population than Italy. Germany and the US put in their orders for thousands of extra ventilators weeks ago. We have only just done it, so ours won’t turn up in time.

daisychain01 · 19/03/2020 21:56

Oh bugger @Bluntness100 you haven't been listening to Donald Trump again have you Grin he of the claim that there's already an anti-malaria therapy that's approved as a cure for Corona - which the FDA had to refute because it's utter crap. Trump is trying to build up his election campaign - you can tell when he says things like "we'll get this all cleaned up and put away and the economy will be back on track".

Tactfully put, Mr President.

Veterinari · 19/03/2020 21:57

Cases would increase until 60% of the population is infected and herd immunity reduces transmission, however the deaths this would bring are unacceptable. So we're trying to halt deaths by social distancing which will reduce the peak of deaths over a longer period of time. But as coronavirus is not going away and as we won't reach the herd immunity stage for ages, it will re-emerge if social distancing stops. So it will need to continue sporadically until a vaccine can be supplied. Likely around 18 months.

Mlou32 · 19/03/2020 21:59

And "in June"...well it's going to take time to slow it down greatly. There are still going to be folk visiting friends and relatives for quite some time, people won't adhere to the rules, it'll take us time as a country to deal with this effectively. It seems like he has given it a 12 week period for us to fully get a grip on this and hopefully eradicate it, or at least slow it down immensely.

Perhaps with a strict, aggressive lockdown (or people acting socially responsible *now), we can "turn the tide" even quicker.

daisypond · 19/03/2020 22:00

This site is so insulting to the UK. We will share information/research/drugs/vaccine information with each other.
No one wants to insult the UK. But we are underperforming. As we have left the EU, we can no longer share with them.

Bluntness100 · 19/03/2020 22:01

I don’t know why everyone is focusing on herd immunity. Time has moved quickly in this, last week they were saying they were saying they were stopping testing now they are increasing it. They clearly are not going for herd immunity now. And to be fair to Boris, that’s obviously not an idea he personally came up with.

And yes they are trialling treatments, it’s not a lie or a conspiracy. And we should all hope they are successful and we can be through this in a few weeks. And in the mean time social distancing and isolate where necessary.

The scare mongering on here is horrific.

Bluntness100 · 19/03/2020 22:02

As we have left the EU, we can no longer share with them

Lol. That’s so not true. 😂😂😂

wecanturnthetide · 19/03/2020 22:02

it will re-emerge if social distancing stops. So it will need to continue sporadically until a vaccine can be supplied. Likely around 18 months. we aren't sure about this. This was worst case scenario in the govmt report. The key thing is to act now, to stop the spread of the virus now, individuals to take responsibility and be aware, and to put pressure on the government to make sure there is adequate medical provision in the UK and adequate social nets.

wecanturnthetide · 19/03/2020 22:03

Perhaps with a strict, aggressive lockdown (or people acting socially responsible now), we can "turn the tide" even quicker*

I agree

MaddieElla · 19/03/2020 22:03

Daisy, we are as instrumental in research as the rest of the world. We are not some poor man's country begging for information and help. We are providing research, like the rest of the world.

EU or no EU. We are excellent researchers and everyone will share information and drugs because this is a worldwide pandemic.

daisychain01 · 19/03/2020 22:03

Threads like this is why I'm coming off Mumsnet. Overnight, an army of scientists have appeared online

Yes there are some advances cases of Covid-itis round these parts Grin

Cam77 · 19/03/2020 22:05

He was completely lost when asked to explain what he meant by that phrase. He's just saying words he thinks sound good. Disturbing lack of substance. He looked surprised to be asked to explain it. It's baffling.

He never expected to have to actually do anything as PM. Corbyn was not a good leader and his intellectual ability is very average for a person holding high office . But he is a person of substance. Johnson is not. He's just a chancer and a bullshitter who's life concern has been himself. He's doing as well as can be expected in the circumstances.

Cam77 · 19/03/2020 22:05

^whose

day1intheisolationhouse · 19/03/2020 22:08

He doesn't know what he means. He's just saying stuff in the hope it'll make it seem like he knows what he's talking about and hoping it'll make us not panic.

SpokeTooSoon · 19/03/2020 22:08

When do people think the schools will reopen? I’m so worried about my children’s education and mental wellbeing.

WE ARE ALLOWED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT MORE THAN ONE THING AT A TIME

Before people ask me if I’m not worried about vulnerable people dying.

DowntownAbby · 19/03/2020 22:09

Well there are shortages of bog rolls and pasta but there's clearly no shortage glue is there, @daisypond

You are posting utterly unsubstantiated nonsense here and clearly relishing the opportunity to cause distress to others.

Why are you doing it? Why?

Just stop it.

day1intheisolationhouse · 19/03/2020 22:09

Spot on.

Musicforsmorks · 19/03/2020 22:09

I agree with bluntness for once.

Many here won’t be happy with good news, we’re all supposed to only focus on the worst scenario maybe we should slit our own throats, see who can win in the misery stakes....

It’s serious, but you can still take it seriously as well as having a positive outlook.
Jesus wept.

Cam77 · 19/03/2020 22:09

The UK is on course for absolute fucking disaster, I'm afraid. We have unfortunately elected the worst government of empty posers at a critical period in modern history. Eton has a lot to answer for.
