@inasense I personally think it's silly to compare ourselves as on par with Italy (we're doing worse) and downright idiotic to think we will see the same "positive" outcome as China

Actually if you have a look at what other european countries are doing and the US it is along the same lines as China in order to get the same results - clearly. I am in France and there is lockdown here. The same for Spain. Same for Brussels. And US. To a slightly greater or lesser extent but all for the same reason - suppression of the virus. As in China. China did go further and that might be what we will be doing if we don't get a handle on it quickly. A key thing they did differently was to do with taking temperatures daily and that might be the next step where i am. In relation to building hospitals, governments in other countries have requisitioned hospitals. What is needed is positive and strong leadership and joined up thinking. And more ventilators - which are largely manufactured in china.

If you don't understand what someone means, or think they are wrong, check your thinking with them, as we can all learn from each other at this time.

When the tide turns, isn't that when the waters come rushing in and you drown?

@wecanturnthetide it's my understanding that they were using a mandatory app which monitored everyones movements and they were doing regular temp checks.

If someone tested positive, everyone they'd been in contact with had to immediately self isolate. They weren't even allowed on public transport etc.

I also understood that even mild cases were being quarantined in the big "corona hospitals" and they were intervening pretty quickly with medical care.

But yes I agree, most of Europe and US are trying to do what China did as far as locking down the population.

It probably goes something like....

China's effort.
.
.
Italy & most of EU + US effort
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
UK effort.

Our children are at school today. Our cafe's, shops, and pubs are open today.

I don't think enough is being done, and since action seems to take about 2 weeks to see effect I think in 2 weeks time we will seriously regret our inability to act.

Falacy · 20/03/2020 10:02

And by "everyone they'd been in contact with" I mean random people on the bus 3 days ago, people they passed on the street etc.

With these new school guidelines, where everyone in their aunt is a keyworker, I can't see us being able to be anywhere near as efficient as this. If one of the healthcare worker parents tests positive, will the whole school go into isolation? I really doubt it.

LeeMiller · 20/03/2020 10:47

@Falacy they can't test positive if they aren't tested, problem solved...

I am just gobsmacked at how little seems to have been learnt. I truly despair.
