People ignoring restrictions will hasten lockdown...london example

Have just driven back from a hospital appt through South london, streets busy, Costa coffees full of big groups, cafes full etc.

I am worried that people not obeying the rules will force the govt to enforce total lockdown sooner than otherwise.

Definitely think that if we shouldn't be in cafes etc they must be forced to close. They know it is coming so of course they are going to try and get money and custom up to the last minute if they can. I don't blame them, I am so sad for some of my local businesses. But if it has to be done we'd better do it properly.

I have a horrible suspicion that a lot more people are ill in London that we thought, and many probably aymptomatic or presymptomatic, sitting in Costa...

I seem to remember in China and Italy that big lock down announcements were made late at night to avoid panic and give people time to let it sink in.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 11:08

Nutmeg it was badly leaked in Italy people fled south and created new hotspots with worse heath services

CeibaTree · 19/03/2020 11:12

I wonder what will happen if they try to enforce a lockdown. Civil disobedience ? Probably. The Army involved ? Who knows. What level of force could be applied ? A significant minority in this country have zero regard for law and order.

I guess something similar would happen here. But in a country of 60 million people, 40,000 isn't a huge percentage of disobeyers.I feel that in general the British are quite a conformist society, so maybe not too much civil disobedience, but we shall see very soon I'm sure!

Tbh when the death rate becomes more stark more people will start have a realisation it’s best to stay inside

Thistly · 19/03/2020 11:44

In the supermarket yesterday
“The world’s gone bonkers. I’m a nurse so I should know. It’s really not that bad, i don’t know why everyone is going mental.’

Yes people are stupid, people who should know better are stupid.

nutmegbrew · 19/03/2020 12:00

@marshabraydo, I heard that too. Hopefully that won't happen here

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 12:09

Nutmeg going by a few threads on here I think it is. Mostly to Norfolk, Devon and Cornwall. 2nd homes and people advertising houses for rent.

megletthesecond · 19/03/2020 12:14

I know. I just had to pop into work to sort an IT glitch and was shocked at people in cafes and just milling around causally.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 12:16

So many are milling about I think it’s more to do with letting a proportion of people getting it before suppression.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 19/03/2020 13:01

On sky news apparently the government have said they are categorically not locking down London.

Inkpaperstars · 19/03/2020 13:07

I think they have leaked that they will not locking down travel in and out of London, I guess it could be a ruse to discourage people leaving, but probably the restrictions will more be within London.

Hard to know what they are thinking but they will be hit heard on three weeks the way people are carrying on.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 13:09

Hard

AutumnRose1 · 19/03/2020 13:31

Marsha, you mean in numbers of cases?

I hope we get some clarity on London at 5pm. Perhaps they’re trying to stop people fleeing.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 13:32

Autumn deaths too ICU is at capacity now and exponential growth means cases will explode.

DeeCeeCherry · 19/03/2020 13:51

Bulletins saying no total lockdown of London & Troops will only be there to help assist with vital roles. I'm not surprised. They'll lock down Central London (which is almost deserted now anyway) so that media & government can have their 'deserted streets pics' to appease the masses. Im still amazed at the number of people who really believe that Boris and this government will organise and mobilise on a mass scale. Relying on leaders who don't lead in anything really. Its been so clear thus far that they're dithering and also relying heavily on people to be 'sensible'. Then there's the herd immunity thing. Rich MPs must be self-isolating in luxury at their country piles as we speak.
