People ignoring restrictions will hasten lockdown...london example

Have just driven back from a hospital appt through South london, streets busy, Costa coffees full of big groups, cafes full etc.

I am worried that people not obeying the rules will force the govt to enforce total lockdown sooner than otherwise.

Definitely think that if we shouldn't be in cafes etc they must be forced to close. They know it is coming so of course they are going to try and get money and custom up to the last minute if they can. I don't blame them, I am so sad for some of my local businesses. But if it has to be done we'd better do it properly.

I have a horrible suspicion that a lot more people are ill in London that we thought, and many probably aymptomatic or presymptomatic, sitting in Costa...

"London is facing a lockdown, possibly before the weekend, as Boris Johnson prepares sweeping new measures — including school closures — to tackle the rapid spread of the coronavirus."

Inkpaperstars · 18/03/2020 16:24

I am worried. I think things are getting worse quicker than their model predicted, again.

To be honest hygeine and London have never really gone hand in hand.

Im in Catford - SE London and it is a Burrough full of the dim.

The Burrough of lewisham (which catford is included in) had 17 confirmed cases as of two days ago. That will have increased no doubt.

Busses are packed full, pubs and cafes have many people in them. People are congregating on benches chatting away without a care in the world.

Meanwhile I'm seeing news articles with pictures of central London being virtually derelict. Covent garden, Leicester square etc.

Nobody where I live appears to give a toss Sad

Reginabambina · 18/03/2020 16:30

Where I am it’s business as usual. Even the rain hasn’t discouraged people from coming out.

Lovelydovey · 18/03/2020 16:33

So I hear central London is dead (from the few remaining colleagues in the office) but our local high street in South London is buzzing more than ice ever seen it before - no signs of a slowdown there. Seems like everyone is working from a coffee shop rather than home.

OneForTheRoadThen · 18/03/2020 16:36

My (council run) gym is still open and classes are packed. I called them today and was told I couldn't pause my membership as they were still permitted to be open and weren't accepting social distancing as a reason for pause. Was also told that I'd lose the money from my son's gymnastics classes there even if he had asthma and even if he lived with vulnerable people.

These places need to be closed.

Thymelord · 18/03/2020 16:40

I suspect this is going to become FAR worse than it needed to be, because people are just so selfish. Nobody is prepared to take it seriously, to inconvenience themselves and to even make an attempt to work together. So I imagine it is going to become unmanageable very very quickly, and there was no need for it to be that way.

bluebluezoo · 18/03/2020 16:41

As far as i can tell london is operating as normal. All clubs- the kids swimming, gymnastics, brownies etc are still in full swing.

People may be using cv as an excuse not to commute into central london, but otherwise nothing.

My sister is oop north and everything is closing- cinema’s, clubs, pools, gyms, leisure centres. It’s almost in reverse, people are going to work and school if they can’t work at home, but otherwise staying home.

DeeCeeCherry · 18/03/2020 16:51

How will people buy food if everywhere is shut? Don't say Supermarkets - they are not virus-proof zones. Are supermarkets going to operate home deliveries en-masse to stop people being irresponsible by going there? If so, I've not heard that. Since we have to eat I've gone to Brixton to shop. Do explain the alternative. If you live in a busy area its hard to bypass everybody.

Don't blame cafes for staying open, they need to earn. Don't blame people who want to support local businesses. For all you know people have washed their hands taken precautions etc. Most people are outside the cafes anyway. & inside the tables are not close together. The government is doing fuck all to help anybody. The rich will be fine but we're not all rich or living in naice spacious under-populated areas are we?

midwestspring · 18/03/2020 16:58

In most lockdown places supermarkets remain open, limited numbers of shoppers are allowed in at any one time and people remain a distance from each other.

The UK will lock down formally because some people seem incapable of following basic social distancing rules.

PeterWeg · 18/03/2020 17:02

The NHS is on the point of being over whelmed now. If you are over 60 do not expect to get anywhere near an ICU in three weeks from now and for the next 6 months, there will be 30 x the number of patients to places.
Lets hope the oxygen demand doesn't exceed capacity.

I want to help local business too but we are fighting a much bigger battle here. Actually the more we suppress this the better it will be for them anyway.

Unless people were taking the precaution of not breathing, they were taking risk.

It is going to be really hard for the less well off and those who have small and unsuitable homes or domestic and social issues. Yes, govt and the wider community need to step up. But no matter what, this has to be done.

I am afraid there is no doubt many fates have been sealed by people trying to ignore it in the past week or so. Including the fates of those who were trying hard but will be caught up in it.

I was in a supermarket today in central london. I was maintaining a good distance from other customers as were most people.

A young Asian man wearing ear phones but playing music so loudly you could hear it walked up and stood right next to me - virtually bumped into me. I moved away and said "excuse me".

He pulled his ear phone out and said "What?" in a surly way.

I said "you shouldn't get too close to people in the current circumstances"

And he just laughed.

That is the attitude of many people I'm afraid.

DeeCeeCherry · 18/03/2020 17:16

Based on current form I have no faith whatsoever that this will be properly implemented in the UK, particularly in large cities. I also can't be sure that people in supermarkets won't have the virus, be it just 2 or 5 or 10 people. My partner is aged 60+ - I'm doing the shopping at present.

I have a vision of us all out there in masks & full body protection suits🤔I reckon that's the only way, truly ...

EmpressLangClegInChair · 18/03/2020 17:43

I had an email from Costa to say they’re going takeaway-only so presumably the other chains will be doing that too.

PeterWeg · 18/03/2020 17:52

Lockdown expected from Friday

winterbear990 · 18/03/2020 17:59

Well thank fuck for that, it's about time

JollyHostess · 18/03/2020 18:07

Yes it's starting to look that way and Boris hinted at it very strongly just now.

My son has heard a "rumor" that Prince Phillip has died...I know, this old chestnut again. Anyone else heard this?

DeeCeeCherry · 18/03/2020 18:21

Just heard schools are closing next week. It just didn't make sense to me going on about cafes etc when schools were still open.

Total lockdown = I will believe it when I see it & it's actually said and implemented outright.

Inkpaperstars · 18/03/2020 20:01

I thought they would say tonight that bars, clubs, activities etc must close, as a bridge between where we are and total lockdown. Could have saved a few thousand cases rather than leave another 24-48 hours and then go to lockdown.

Really sorry for the exam year students.

Unfortunately some people either don’t care or are too stupid to understand

Dh who works in a healthcare setting comes home with an example every day, makes me livid. Today’s takes the biscuit.

Man attending an appointment brings his wife for no reason, and she is coughing over everybody in the waiting room saying it’s “just a cold”, literally coughing into people’s faces, almost on purpose. Everyone was so upset - a lady who self isolated herself because she was caring for her elderly mother with cancer, a student who had not long flown back from Thailand and absolutely petrified of catching it. Angry

It won’t be long until they have to enforce a lockdown by law. It’s the only way some people will understand.

Duchessofblandings · 18/03/2020 20:41

Empress:

Re. Costa. Laudable but presumably people will still have to go into the shop and queue to collect their order (unless they’re delivering which seems logistically impossible)?

Pointless really.

TiddyTid · 18/03/2020 20:45

Twats are coming here in droves to East Suffolk. You selfish bastards. Hospitals are an hour away and already an elderly demographic. You've also been assisting in emptying the shelves. Don't come here, you really and truly are not welcome. (Not that you were in the first place)

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 18/03/2020 20:46

Less than an hour after school closure announced, local pub posted video on Facebook encouraging people to use it as a play pub , take kids there, eat and socialise with other kids and friends
That’s how stupid people are

What is the relevance of the man being Asian?
