People ignoring restrictions will hasten lockdown...london example

Have just driven back from a hospital appt through South london, streets busy, Costa coffees full of big groups, cafes full etc.

I am worried that people not obeying the rules will force the govt to enforce total lockdown sooner than otherwise.

Definitely think that if we shouldn't be in cafes etc they must be forced to close. They know it is coming so of course they are going to try and get money and custom up to the last minute if they can. I don't blame them, I am so sad for some of my local businesses. But if it has to be done we'd better do it properly.

I have a horrible suspicion that a lot more people are ill in London that we thought, and many probably aymptomatic or presymptomatic, sitting in Costa...

I've seen similar adverts from pubs on Facebook. I'm really beginning to get both worried and angry.

My office is still operating at full capacity, my 70 year old boss is coming in tomorrow to host a meeting with people travelling from the Midlands, literally nobody seems to give a shit and what choice do people like me have? I can't pay my rent if I don't go into work.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 21:10

Yes people will leg it out if London straining services
People will do whatever they want and we will get a lockdown as a result

DeeCeeCherry · 18/03/2020 21:12

Twats are coming here in droves to East Suffolk. You selfish bastards. Hospitals are an hour away and already an elderly demographic. You've also been assisting in emptying the shelves

TiddyTid This is what plenty of people will do, even if they're going on about people still being 'out and about'. They will not self-isolate totally (unless forced) especially if they've bored fractious school aged DCs running up and down the house.

I know a 70 year old woman who's been told not to come into work as she's in the vulnerable age group. She has a holiday home in Kent so she, her husnad, her daughter & son-in-law and the 4 grandkids are all going down there as 'Well it's Spring so at least the weather should be OK for some beach days & wandering'.

They won't be the only ones with the attitude that the countryside doesn't count/matter

CatAndHisKit · 18/03/2020 21:15

Savings and Myshiny I think the logic there is, healthy people won't need hospital beds, as the vast majority of youngr/healthy older people can recover at home within a week or so. Many such examples - even Nadine the minister and her 84 y.o. mum who got even milder symptoms than Nadine.

Racheyg · 18/03/2020 21:16

London here.
I work in Hampstead and journey to and from was busy. Also the cafes and shops were busy.

Boys still had swimming lessons this evening.

DeeCeeCherry · 18/03/2020 21:19

My Niece is a mental health support worker. Last week one of the residents got a call that her mum had developed Covid symptoms. She rushed over to her mum's. Staff immediately got on to senior management about it. Senior Manager said 'you can't tell her not to go & you can't breach confidentiality by phoning her mum' . Of course, the senior manager was working from home🙄. So fuck the staff & other 14 residents, what does it matter?

Workplace situations are as bad or worse than the cafes scenario, loads aren't doing the right thing at all. No matter what their written policy says.

NellyGrace · 18/03/2020 21:19

My part of London has music lessons run by the council still going and swimming pool open/ swimming lessons etc

But then again schools haven’t even closed yet. It’s no wonder no one is taking this seriously.

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/03/2020 21:19

One of our local soft plays is actively encouraging parents to bring their kids along for a survival coffee and get together whilst schools are closed....

ballsdeep · 18/03/2020 21:21

People aren't taking it seriously where I live either. They are on FB saying how they are enjoying gins in pubs because it's their life and their right! FFS.
Market stalls still going, cafes open etc.

If we had lockdown like in Italy , would offices be open?

Theredjellybean · 18/03/2020 21:27

Here on Cornwall it's been mad. All the cafes, shops, etc full of older people.. My dd and dp in zone 1 say its deserted.

The attitudes of the brit public have amazed me.. Boris and govt will have to do what the French government has done and impose some form of marshal law.

I note that emergency legislation to allow for sweeping govt imposed restrictions is due to be nodded thr Parliament early next week.
Then we will get a tougher stance from. Govt

ballsdeep · 18/03/2020 21:37

And it's so bloody annoying when people like JOE WICKS who has a huge huge following add stories on Instagram of him taking his children out to supermarkets and cafes.

peanutbutterandfluff · 18/03/2020 21:54

@ballsdeep yeah I thought that too about Joe Wicks!!! WTF?!? So fucking irresponsible. That guy is such a fucking bellend.

I think people feel like nothing bad will happen to them, and they’re right, it likely won’t. But what about the hundreds of thousands that will die if people ignore the experts!?!?

ballsdeep · 18/03/2020 21:59

@ peanut and he's been off globe trotting recently roo! So irresponsible and selfish.

BeetrootBasil · 18/03/2020 21:59

I am pretty sure once we reach 150 fatalities London is going to go into lockdown and that will probably be Friday. If we do not we are going to exceed ICU capacity in three weeks and that cannot happen. We just cannot do that to our NHS staff and country. It is not if but when.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 18/03/2020 22:03

City of London is empty (although the shops are still open), and so are the commuter trains, but when I went out to buy some food on my local South London high street I passed two barbers’ shops full of customers.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 18/03/2020 22:06

Roads near me busy as usual, supermarket and local garages rammed.

Splodgetastic · 18/03/2020 22:16

We had one guy on our local Facebook page offering to do free childcare for other parents as a favour. First, that’s not going to help the situation and second, that’s just plain weird!

CeibaTree · 18/03/2020 23:27

How far reaching do you think the initial London lockdown will be - all London boroughs, even the ones that are on the edges, or just something like zones 1-4?

Moomin8 · 18/03/2020 23:31

People are irresponsible. Just read this on a beauty salon website near me...

FREE TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN
We know that school closures are happening so we have in place a plan to ensure you can still attend your appointment!
Our normal policy is that we can not allow children to accompany you under the age of 13. This is because the child is unattended.
So why leave them unattended?

When you book in for a treatment we will give your child a free treatment as long as they are 5 and over!
If you already have an appointment in place and worried about childcare please give us a call so we can arrange for them to have a treatment absolutely free!

coronamoana · 18/03/2020 23:35

this is why I understand why they tried to delay closing the schools. Where I live has been increasingly busier on the streets/parks now that more people wfh

Moomin8 · 18/03/2020 23:39

Yes kids going everywhere with their parents won't help

DeeCeeCherry · 19/03/2020 00:47

metro.co.uk/video/brits-spain-ignore-quarantine-2132134/?ito=vjs-link

& as all hotels in Spain are closing/tourists have to leave by 24 March, this is an example of the attitude some will have when they're back here

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 03:37

DeeCee we don’t want them back for sure. Male and fat and stupid - all bring higher risk no thanks.

twinnywinny14 · 19/03/2020 04:13

People are naive to impact this virus can have and are blatantly ignoring medical advice in continuing to go about their normal lives. The outcome of doing this is no slowing down of the spread and therefore the lack of icu beds and ventilators which will lead to more deaths. If people continue to ignore the advice the government will take enforcement measures in order to prevent this from happening which includes lockdown

Watchagotcha · 19/03/2020 05:19

That’s what happened here in France. People were told to practice social distancing and the schools were already closed on Friday last week... but the weather was nice, the bars and cafes and parks still open, so over the weekend it was business as usual. By Tuesday lunchtime we were in proper lockdown, with all non essential businesses closed and police checking anyone outside their house and issuing fines to anyone without a valid reason.

It needed to be made much clearer, backed up by the enforced closure of all non-essential businesses and the presence / ability of police to issue fines, to really have an impact.
Our lovely big parc just round the corner has been closed due to picking plonkers - preventing sensible people from getting some fresh air and exercise at quiet times.
