Do you think schools will reopen after Easter

Takemebackto · 18/03/2020 13:57

My children’s Easter break ends late April. Is it likely they will be able to return? Both have sen so the lack of routine isn’t helpful for them. I’ve obviously explained how serious this is.

OP posts:
PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/03/2020 15:35

I think til after the may half term

belay · 18/03/2020 15:37

Millions of parents will be on their knees of not open until September

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/03/2020 15:38

No. I think June will be earliest. We are at the start of this shit storm and it takes 3 months to get passed peak infection.

tinytemper66 · 18/03/2020 15:38

I think we will have Skeleton staff for frontline workers to go in and provide food for FSM kids. I have already said I will come in to help.

HonestlyItsFine · 18/03/2020 15:39

It all depends on what happens "next".
If it's safe, no reason why they couldn't reopen in May or June (for example), and skip the summer holidays in favour of a one week break before they go up to the next year group.
So nobody is able to say at the moment.

RevolutionofourTime · 18/03/2020 15:43

If it’s anything like Hong Kong, they will first announce closures for a few weeks, and this will then be renewed for a month, then again and again. Thereby insuring no one can make any long term plans of any kind.

Even if they announce just two weeks of closures now, chances are this will be extended.

LottieBees19 · 18/03/2020 15:43

No
We will be lucky and I pray they go back in September.
We have a huge wave heading towards us and it hasnt landed yet.
350 people dying each day in Italy

palacegirl77 · 18/03/2020 15:44

Depends on this first peak. If it hits in April as thought then we could be back during May sometime - if theyre open now at this rate then if the rate is the same it would make sense theyd be open.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 18/03/2020 15:45

I feel so bad for my yr 11. I know theres worse things happening of course but who could ever have imagined their school life would just end like that. He’s more bothered about prom though tbh.

cologne4711 · 18/03/2020 15:46

Maybe they'll reopen in late April/early May for revision classes and exams, so Y11 and 13 only. 6th form colleges might also be able to reopen so Y12s.

Everyone else May half term.

Scotland - not sure, maybe they will wait until August.

Cam77 · 18/03/2020 15:46

Now the government finally admits the need to go from 5,000 >25,000 tests a day. Seriously, the Minster Raving Loony Party could be no less incompetent than this government in their handling of this so far.

LemonBreeland · 18/03/2020 15:50

My DS1 is in 5th year in Scotland and doing his Highers. They can't go off prelim results at our school as we had a fire in November and they were off school and disrupted before prelims. They also don't have mock examples of projects as there was no time to do them due to the fire. We are in an awful situation for our exam age DC. I don't think schools will reopen before August though. I really worry about what this means for our DC. We were already worried as parents because of the fire.

EasterEggz · 18/03/2020 15:53

No way. You need to read the Imperial report and understand what the government / we are dealing with here. Sorry, but everyone is going to have to adapt and that includes the education system.

WhatTheHellHappenedArgh · 18/03/2020 15:54

Anyone who thinks this is going to be a couple of weeks (as seems to be the case with many of my colleagues) is in for a very rude awakening

Zucker · 18/03/2020 15:54

What are people not getting about this virus. It's like nothing we have seen before. Saying the government will HAVE TO do this that or the other does not apply anymore. Ffs

At the rate the educational companies have been releasing their entire back catalogues for free online means there won't be school for the forseeable future.

edgewater · 18/03/2020 16:08

I think they will close until June and then I think they will go back and there will be no summer holidays. May be a week between July and October holidays.

For information Scotland holidays are 1 July until mid August.

Tarararara · 18/03/2020 16:10

Surely priority should be to get the antibody tests developed and rolled out. Any child who has an immunity certificate can go back to school (ditto teachers), any adult who has an immunity certificate can go to restaurants (ditto waiting staff).

Those without an immunity certificate self-isolate or socially distant themselves (depending on the prevailing level of infection in society at the time).

Gets kids back to school, gets the economy moving.

Racheyg · 18/03/2020 16:13

I reckon they will be back after the Easter break. There is no chance in hell the economy can survive with half the population not working due to child care

NotGenerationAlpha · 18/03/2020 16:15

No, it'll be until September.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 18/03/2020 16:22

I reckon they will be back after the Easter break

Not. A. Chance.

teraculum29 · 18/03/2020 16:29

if u look on history of epidemics, they usually last about a year, so I dont think so that schools will reopen that soon.
Unless the miracle will happen and they find the cure.

Deelish75 · 18/03/2020 16:31

No I don’t think they will re-open until September, and then we may all be on tenterhooks waiting to see if the virus spikes again in the autumn.

I think (am hoping) they manage to do something for students doing their A-Levels, GCSEs and even Yr6 SATs in June or July, but my concern there is will the results be lower than average due to students not having a full education for 2-3 months beforehand.

fivesecondrule · 18/03/2020 16:33

I got absolutely shot down in flames by a couple of mums in my DS school mum WhatsApp group for suggesting it could be June maybe even after the school holidays. I couldn't even be bothered to argue with them as they are the 'I know best' sort. I might be totally wrong but we're all nervous now. The return after Easter will clash with the expected peak so who is seriously going to want to send their kids back to school at that time if it's the case. I do hope I'm wrong.

Cornettoninja · 18/03/2020 16:34

I think it’ll be reviewed regularly but if the numbers stack up they may allow gcse/a level pupils return at some point before summer.

It’s impossible to call - there’s no precedent for this.

feelingverylazytoday · 18/03/2020 16:34

Unless the miracle will happen and they find the cure
They're making good progress but it still takes time to do the testing and then manufacturing and setting up the distribution processes.
