Do you think schools will reopen after Easter

My children’s Easter break ends late April. Is it likely they will be able to return? Both have sen so the lack of routine isn’t helpful for them. I’ve obviously explained how serious this is.

China has closed their last Corona emergency hospital, and their cases have slowed right down, the last few inc visitors.

Womenwotlunch · 18/03/2020 15:08

We are way behind China. This virus started in November/ December in China.

FAQs · 18/03/2020 15:09

If the do Exams in Sept, how will that impact A-level and Uni courses/offers does anyone know? Not all GCSE students stay in their current school.

adaline · 18/03/2020 15:13

In wuhang they've started getting back to normal and they may find a cure soon.

But Wuhan have had the virus since November. We're a good three months behind them.

GCSEs and A levels will have to happen in some form. You can't make them all resit the year - Unis and colleges will be empty, and earlier years can't move up. If they aren't able to do the exams in May/June, then the GCSEs and A levels will have to be awarded by some other criteria such as predicted grades, mocks or teacher assessment. No way will Unis let their real estate stand empty earning no rents nor will they accept no tuition fees. They need a new intake in October one way or another.

Curious78 · 18/03/2020 15:13

I reckon we'll find out in about two hours

Daffodil101 · 18/03/2020 15:14

I think they’ll let them sit exams after some online learning. Then they’ll lower the grade boundaries.

I’m upset for my Y6 daughter, she will miss so much about leaving primary school, and I’m just horrified for kids studying for exams.

speakout · 18/03/2020 15:16

They won't be back until after summer I think- so 6 months off.

Poppydaisies · 18/03/2020 15:17

I've got a year 11 and year 13. I really hope they both get a chance to take their exams!

Perhaps schools could open as exam centres only?

I agree!

Alone07 · 18/03/2020 15:19

I have a feeling it will be June, or partially open for ye6,11,13.

OrangeSamphire · 18/03/2020 15:20

I'm fully expecting it to be September.

Had a thought too that I wonder if school buildings could make useful field hospitals...

Nousernameforme · 18/03/2020 15:20

In China it's been just over a month. As long as it all goes well over there I cant see us being off much longer than that. I would say spring half term at the very latest.

OhLook · 18/03/2020 15:25

But in China they are enforcing isolation!

PhoneTwattery · 18/03/2020 15:25

Allllllllll speculation.

We'll know when we know.

MrKlaw · 18/03/2020 15:26

No - my DS university has closed until September now.

This is a slow burn thing. I think thats one big thing that has perhaps not been well communicated. All this 'isolate for 7-14 days'. Thats great, but thats a long, rolling period of lots of people doing that. We need to keep within NHS capacity which means letting people get sick slowly - which means we're going to have challenging times for quite a while

Rosehip10 · 18/03/2020 15:26

no

RAOK · 18/03/2020 15:27

No

adaline · 18/03/2020 15:28

But the measures being taken in China are MUCH harsher than here. The situation isn't comparable at all.

Yes but now what? Are we thinking China just opens up Wuhan and magically no virus? I think that may be hope rather than expectation. Things could flare up very easily if you still have 95% of your population that has not been exposed

EverythingChanges321 · 18/03/2020 15:31

No, I don’t think they’ll re-open until September at the earliest assuming there isn’t a spike in cases at the start of Autumn.

Elephantonascooter · 18/03/2020 15:32

Complete and utter bullshit.
The government is concerned about the economic effects. Its been clear they arnt implementing these measures to stop the spread but to postpone the peak until after the winter so the NHS can cope.
There is no way the gov is going to allow kids to miss 4 months of school because that means parents will have to stop work, loose their jobs etc and the country would be in bits. They will be back in school after about a month ish when the NHS can cope with the peaking numbers. In the meantime, the high risk groups are asked to isolate for 12 weeks so they don't catch it as they are more likely to need the NHS.
The healthy people that do catch it most likely won't need NHS help and the country can carry on as best it can.

There is absolutely no way kids will be off until summer.

Marieo · 18/03/2020 15:32

No one really knows, just have to hold on and see. Can the school give some sort of timetable to give structure to your days?

adaline · 18/03/2020 15:33

And if there's another spike of cases in China, I imagine they'll be going straight back into lockdown again.

Nousernameforme · 18/03/2020 15:33

That's why I said as long as it all goes well. Ofc if it pops up again just as strong then we will need to stay in longer, but if all goes well then there would be a great deal of evidence for getting schools open sooner rather than later.
