Do you think schools will reopen after Easter

My children’s Easter break ends late April. Is it likely they will be able to return? Both have sen so the lack of routine isn’t helpful for them. I’ve obviously explained how serious this is.

I’m going to go against the grain and say they will be back before September, I think two months max, Boris will want the economy going* again and parents can’t work without childcare and schools open.

Ffsnosexallowed · 18/03/2020 14:49

I think schools will remain closed until after the summer. Don't know what that means for exams etc. My dd is due to sit her highers. Guess we'll find out more when the time comes

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/03/2020 14:51

My DS is 6. I can't take 6 months off work to look after him if it ends up being September, we will have no income. Sad

anothernewone · 18/03/2020 14:52

Schools break up early july, which is 4 months, and this is expected to last the next 3- maybe they'll reopen after may half term depending on how it pans out?

SirVixofVixHall · 18/03/2020 14:52

No.
Really tough for year 11 and 13.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 18/03/2020 14:53

I think the earliest will be May half term, but it's impossible to know the answer at this point.

We'll know more in the coming weeks as countries that have already had lengthy shutdowns start to return

Mummydoctor · 18/03/2020 14:53

I’m also worrying about how we manage childcare if they are off that long. I’m a GP and husband works as an engineer (can’t work from home due to secure network). Potentially we will have to both reduce our hours to cover looking after the kids (as grandparents are in at risk category).

Derbygerbil · 18/03/2020 14:54

No. I think they’ll be off til September. The situation won’t quickly stabilise. This is becoming the new normal.

Mummydoctor · 18/03/2020 14:54

I’m also really concerned about the impact this will have on the children. It’s such a long time to miss education wise and socially.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 18/03/2020 14:54

*after May half term

ifonly4 · 18/03/2020 14:56

No. Heard a rumour this morning that our local school doesn't anticipate being back until half term.

SilverySurfer · 18/03/2020 14:56

I know nothing about schools but don't see any way they will be back after Easter.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 18/03/2020 14:57

Not a chance. They're expecting the peak to hit around June. Schools will be closed until September at least. If they do open in September it will be temporary until the second wave starts to hit and then they'll close again.

Aurorie11 · 18/03/2020 14:57

No, my guess is after May half term

SirVixofVixHall · 18/03/2020 14:58

Plom when you say you “Don’t want to incite mass panic” does that....(quavery voice) ...mean that BF’s predictions are even more doom laden than before ?

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 18/03/2020 14:59

sun sorry about your job Flowers

Derbygerbil · 18/03/2020 14:59

Boris will want the economy going again and parents can’t work without childcare and schools open.*

So you think BJ will say “screw this, we all need to take our chances and hope we’re not one of the 250,000 who’ll die!”

Toothsil · 18/03/2020 15:01

@Mummydoctor the education and social element worries me too. DD is an only child and while we do a lot as a family, she doesn't have any company of her own age at home and her cousins are at the other end of the country, not that we would be able to see them anyway with all this.

BarbedBloom · 18/03/2020 15:02

Friend is a teacher, told they hope to reopen but head said he was told to prepare for September as peak expected in June. We are in wales

peekaboob · 18/03/2020 15:02

Could they start school earlier? So keep them off for the peak but bring forward the autumn term to start August?

Milicentbystander72 · 18/03/2020 15:02

My guess is May, maybe half term maybe not. All usual school dates and timetables are up in the air.

Some virologists are modelling that our virus peak will be May, so maybe not a good time to re-open.

I'm a Secondary School Governor. Our head is constantly on the phone with other Head teachers. Some theories are that English schools might decide to repeat a year (?), other suggestions that the schools year will start in July rather than September. Others think exams will somehow go ahead but benchmarks for grades will be drastically lowered.

Again, all just theories....

FAQs · 18/03/2020 15:03

Think they will have partial reopening, priority to years 11 and 13.

adaline · 18/03/2020 15:04

Nope. I think they'll be off until September, perhaps with the exception of GCSE and A-level classes.

ballsdeep · 18/03/2020 15:05

How's does anyone know? It's speculation. In wuhang they've started getting back to normal and they may find a cure soon.

Womenwotlunch · 18/03/2020 15:06

I don’t think that exams will go ahead. If the peak is in May, who is going to invigilate?
Also, this will involve children being in a large hall with potentially hundreds of other students
I think that they may bring the Autumn term forward to August. Public exams to take place in September. Universities , colleges courses to start in November.
