Going to Spain tomorrow

Dootie · 13/03/2020 16:51

How stupid am I being??

I'm off on a short break to Spain tomorrow. Not in an affected (or largely affected anyway) area, but I note the situation is getting worse by the day.

Staying near Torrevieja. I'm there tomorrow until Wednesday.

elpais.com/espana/2020-03-14/el-gobierno-prohibe-todos-los-viajes-que-no-sean-de-fuerza-mayor.html If you do manage to get in you might get stuck, we’re being advised to not leave the house.

Nameisthegame · 14/03/2020 14:08

What! It’s now 5700 now!

MaxNormal · 14/03/2020 14:24

Hopefully OP and others planning to travel to Spain have now realised what a bad idea that would be at present.

SlowCooked · 14/03/2020 14:32

What an embarrassment some people are. Honestly, how dense can you be?? Global pandemic and countries on lock down due to fast spreading virus found in which there is no known cure and someone here wants to go on their hols. We have a 5k holiday booked that we will more than likely cancel unless something drastically happens to change the situation in the next few months.

Mlou32 · 14/03/2020 14:34

Haven't they stopped entry to Spain? I know Jet2 flights were turned away.

Scruffyoak · 14/03/2020 14:34

In laws are not going to their property in spain this month. I would not go either.

coronade · 14/03/2020 14:34

My friend was due to fly home from Tenerife today but her flight has been cancelled. She’s hoping to get home on Monday now.
Don’t think we will be able to fly anywhere soon.

ScarlettBlaize · 14/03/2020 14:34

You don't have to be so fucking rude about it @Slowcooked
The situation has developed rapidly and we don't all have 5k to throw away.

PatricksRum · 14/03/2020 14:38

Selfish but possibly natural selection.

SlowCooked · 14/03/2020 14:38

Noone has any money to throw away. This was our first holiday in 10 years actually. It's about not spreading the virus around and using common sense. Hmm

daisychain01 · 14/03/2020 15:14

Don't prove the validity of the theory of 'sunk cost fallacy' OP. You've already paid for the trip you won't get that money back! So just forget the cost, and do the right thing for you and yours, plus the UK.

The only potential to recoup any cost, could be if your airline or holiday company cancels the flight, then you should have a valid claim - either on your insurance, or via ABTA, or even via your credit card, depending on your personal circumstances and the Ts&Cs.

Headline - 1,500 more cases TODAY!!!

Coronavirus cases in Spain have risen by 1,500 to more than 5,700, public health officials say.

Spain is the worst affected country in Europe after Italy, which has more than 15,000 cases.
The Spanish government is set to announce a lockdown as part of a national state of emergency, according to local media reports.

Jeez proving the sunk cost fallacy theory really is true!

If you've already spent £5K you've thrown it away whether you go or stay, you.wont.get.that.money.back

So discount that from your decision-making process, and the only thing left to decide is whether you value your health, and the health of others in the U.K.

Exactly!

Poppydaisies · 14/03/2020 15:26

crustycrab · 14/03/2020 15:27

@Mlou32 no flights were turned away. Jet2 decided to cancel their flights and those in mid-air turned back

Dootie · 14/03/2020 15:55

Wow, just come back here!

I haven't gone. I was asking what other people would do/for advice, there really isn't any need to be so rude Confused

For those asking, its a family holiday home we all regularly use, not a hotel which is why I wasn't sure whether to still go or not at the time.

I understand what the sunk cost fallacy is.

We will not be going on our holiday, regardless of how much money we lose.

I was saying that most of us can't afford five thousand pounds for a holiday, whether or not we actually get to go, so could do without being sneered at and insulted by someone with far more money.

SlowCooked · 14/03/2020 19:45

ScarlettBlaize you seem to have latched on to the fact that our only holiday in a decade cost 5k. It was to press home that other more pressing factors outweigh normal considerations but I regret mentioning it now that it seems to have fogged the point. Like other pps have said... it's a sunk cost. And the OP will do what she wants to in the end but she did open up the thread specifically asking if she was being 'stupid'.

For what it's worth, we are not in any way rich and this holiday has taken a couple of years to save up for and as a get away for my children after so many hard years for us and includes some of our extended family members too but still, if it's not safe we will take it on the chin and cancel. Means we will lose most of the money we have saved very slowly and painfully but I'd rather be safe but that's my view and I trust my kids will understand. However, it's just a holiday and we will get one one day....but I'd rather enjoy it and not worry about being stranded or ill etc.

Tootletum · 14/03/2020 19:58

@Dootie sadly that's what most threads are like even if not this situation. Rude, bitchy and personal comments.

SneezyMcSneezeface · 22/03/2020 12:42

can you imagine if you had gone? You'd be like those idiots abroad now weeping and wailing that the UK isn't doing enough to get them 'home' after they decided to go for a jaunt in the middle of a global pandemic...

Anna713 · 22/03/2020 12:48

Not everyone who is currently abroad decided to go for a jaunt in the middle of a pandemic. Many, like my son , left several weeks ago on a climbing expedition before there was a pandemic. No one foresaw how quickly this emergency situation arose. My son managed to get home thank goodness but I am very sorry for the people stuck abroad

ILLBESUZIE · 22/03/2020 12:49

Stupid and selfish

Petiolaris · 22/03/2020 13:03

Shocking behaviour. We’re all going to die because of selfish people like this.

Stuckupsnob · 22/03/2020 13:18

People like you are prolonging this “War”
