Going to Spain tomorrow

How stupid am I being??

I'm off on a short break to Spain tomorrow. Not in an affected (or largely affected anyway) area, but I note the situation is getting worse by the day.

Staying near Torrevieja. I'm there tomorrow until Wednesday.

OP posts:

Don't be daft, of course you shouldn't go.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 13/03/2020 17:56

I know someone who works for an insurance company and they're literally adding this into all their policies. If you want to be covered, they up your premiums.

And you know who the OP is insured with and have read their policy have you??

I also work for an insurance company. Just make sure you check your cover OP. You're not going to an area where the FCO are advising against travel so I would go in your place too. I know someone currently in the Costa del Sol and it's business as usual there.

sunshinestanley · 13/03/2020 18:00

I have family in Andalusia and it really isn't business as usual, certainly not where they are. And even if it was, it is guaranteed not to be in a couple of days time. They are frantically trying to get home. You'd be mad to go IMO.

Straycatstrut · 13/03/2020 18:02

I know people off to France on a skiing jolly tomorrow with their young children. I can't believe they are being allowed.

I also know people who are ranting to all who'll listen about their Ibiza holiday taking priority over everything in April and May - also wanting to take their kids.

These people would be the FIRST to complain if someone in their family caught it from someone who had brought it back from somewhere!

fellyjish · 13/03/2020 18:02

We're due to go next week and have decided not to. We're holding off cancelling multiple accommodations etc in the hope Spain will do more of a lockdown/FCO advice will cover more of the country so travel insurance will pay out, at present it won't as our trip isn't to any of the locked down areas.

damnthatanxiety · 13/03/2020 18:04

DonnaDarko insurance companies are writing restrictions in to their NEW policies but if you already hold insurance, it will not be excluded. Also, the tickets will not be refunded if there are no travel restrictions to a destination. 'advice' is not the same as an actual restriction. So insurance companies are obliged to give full coverage to holiday makers who have already booked and paid for insurance.

Mummyshark2018 · 13/03/2020 18:04

My friend teaches in Costa del sol and schools closed and everyone in lockdown from midnight tonight for 2 weeks.

heath48 · 13/03/2020 18:05

Benidorm is shutting down from midnight tonight for 14 days, all bars, restaurants will be shut.

Don’t know how big the area is that is shutting down, but Torrevieja is not that far from Benidorm.

Madness to go,you might not be able to get back even if you do get there.

theflushedzebra · 13/03/2020 18:07

They've declared a sate of emergency. You may end up stuck there, in quarantine.

I wouldn't.

Symbollove · 13/03/2020 18:07

Is it worth the risk?? Ask yourself

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 18:08

Madness

Cockola · 13/03/2020 18:09

I tried to cancel my Tenerife holiday today and was told I would be charged £400 in cancellation fees

Hoping the government advice changes soon

ScarlettBlaize · 13/03/2020 18:09

We are booked to go to Cordoba province (flying via Malaga) in just under 4 weeks. Flights and (separate, 4 different) accommodation are non-refundable, and insurance won't cover unless the FCO advice changes.

Two in our family of four are asthmatic. I'm leaning very heavily towards not going, but it will be a tough choice if the FCO doesn't change its advice.

BertiesLanding · 13/03/2020 18:12

By all means go, as long as you're okay with not coming back for a while.

thenightsky · 13/03/2020 18:29

DH's colleague went to Tenerife last weekend for one week. He's been quarantined there for two weeks, so will miss his flight home and will have to find the money to pay for the extra week too.

meuca · 13/03/2020 19:08

I live in Catalunya. You are an idiot if you travel to Spain. The country is in the process of shutting down. Medical professionals are telling everyone to stay at home. Areas that are not reporting many cases now will be, and very soon. This is not the time for your holiday.

lazeonthesofa · 13/03/2020 19:12

My mum lives there, they are going into lockdown for 2 weeks to try to stem the flow from Madrid to the coast to their second homes!

LambriniSocialist · 13/03/2020 19:13

There are loads of people skiing this week - the French ski resorts are as busy as ever apparently.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/03/2020 19:14

Stupid, selfish and irresponsible.

chatterbugmegastar · 13/03/2020 19:24

This sort of stupidity is why the CMO and CSO have to treat us ALL like idiots. It really really fucks me off that so many people are so bloody fucking stupid, and ask questions with such fucking obvious answers. Jesus. Biscuit

ScarlettBlaize · 13/03/2020 20:03

If it's so 'fucking obvious Jesus biscuit', why has the FCO not advised against it?

chatterbugmegastar · 13/03/2020 20:12

No idea. But sometimes we have to use common sense. 500k on lockdown and state of emergency declared in Spain

But let's all pack a picnic and pop over for a jolly Confused

feelingverylazytoday · 13/03/2020 20:30

Jesus, sometimes I think we would be better off if air travel had never been invented.

Duchessofblandings · 13/03/2020 20:34

I don’t know you so don’t know if you are stupid but you are certainly recklessly irresponsible if you decide to go. And prepared to remain in quarantine in Spain, presumably, if necessary? Then again when you return to the UK?

ScarlettBlaize · 13/03/2020 20:47

The lockdown is in Madrid and the Basque country. A long way from Andalucia.

I'm assuming that the FCO will extend their 'do not travel' advice to the rest of Spain in the near future, but the fact is that they haven't yet, so it's a bit shitty to condemn people for thinking about their options.

I think in all likelihood we will not go in April, but we'll lose £1500 if the FCO advice doesn't change. And we will be covered for medical expenses, repatriation etc. while we're there. So it's not a 'no brainer'.
