When do we think schools will shut and likely turn of closure.

I don’t like either Nicola Sturgeon or Boris Johnson but I thought NS got it right with her press conference outlying the finding is the meeting and the plan for the foreseeable future. I didn’t agree with the outcome but I was a lot more reassured by her speech than I was by the wally BJ who waffled on with no real clarification or plan.

Are the schools likely to close, how soon do we think this will happen and for how long...

Surely if school closure is imminent the more time you can give people to put childcare, change of work plans, etc in place the better...

It doesn’t actually sound like the government here are going to close the schools now.

They are resigned to the fact loads of people will get it and want this to happen so they get ‘herd immunity’ - if that’s even a thing. They are just slowing it down (flattening the peak) slightly by telling people to stay at home if they have a cough.

They are attempting a completely different strategy to most of the rest of the globe here.

These are unchartered waters and a massive gamble. Who knows if it will pay off and Boris will be remembered as a brave trail blazer.

Or just a murdering tw*t.

I’ve just posted a thread....Uni of Leicester has cancelled lectures for my son from Monday.

CaptainMerica · 13/03/2020 15:33

I think it was clear the NS is expecting to close schools, though she is going along with government advice for now. I think she will crack over the next week and close Scottish schools before the rest of the UK.

It makes it easier that Scotland is that bit closer to exams than England, so the bulk of the exam year teaching will be done, and they could potentially open for exams only in April/May.

Nat6999 · 13/03/2020 15:39

We have had a letter saying that school is planning for closure but they don't have a definite date yet. They are asking to be let know if any pupils don't have access to internet or have a laptop or tablet, so work can be sent in a different format. Priority will be given to Y11 & Y13 pupils & each department will have email contact to ask questions, send work etc to be marked.

Davincitoad · 13/03/2020 15:42

Teachers can all just get coronavirus because it will minimise the inconvenience 😢

Oysterbabe · 13/03/2020 15:45

I think they will close but maybe not for a couple of weeks.

Echobelly · 13/03/2020 15:47

I don't think UK is thinking of it - I think it might only happen if we get to full Italy-style shut down. In some ways it would seem to make sense to extend Easter hols, but gov has made it clear the consequences of closing schools may be unhelpful - eg lost NHS staff, kids moving to more different places than just going back and forth to school, kids staying with grandparents who will be more vulnerable, on top of the fact it's still unclear to what extent (if any) kids may spread virus while never displaying symptoms.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 13/03/2020 15:48

They might tack in s week either side of the Easter holidays maybe

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 15:49

Universities are closing/going online. Schools are due for an almost month long break at the end of the month anyway. I would imagine that if there is a closure announced it will be timed to coincide with school holidays.

Helenj1977 · 13/03/2020 15:57

They won't. They're waiting for Easter which is 2 weeks away.

peachgreen · 13/03/2020 15:58

I think they'll close after Easter and remain closed until September.

billybagpuss · 13/03/2020 16:00

I wouldn't be surprised it they brought the state schools in line with the private schools holidays, so pretty much closed for April.

StuckBetweenDarknessAndLight · 13/03/2020 16:01

I agree that they are waiting for Easter, then they won't reopen until summer (universities) or September (schools).
They've made it clear they are going for hopefully not quite as bad but it will last for longer.

Ohdeariedear · 13/03/2020 16:01

One child's school has put a load of work online the second half of this week and the other child has been sent home today with workbooks in case they close. We are in Scotland. I think it’s inevitable.

Selfsettling3 · 13/03/2020 16:01

@Reginabambina only private schools are off for a month. State schools will
Be closed for two weeks.

fedup21 · 13/03/2020 16:02

Schools are due for an almost month long break at the end of the month anyway.

Where?! Certainly not in my school!

PhilCornwall1 · 13/03/2020 16:07

I think they'll close after Easter and remain closed until September.

Really? I can't see them being closed for that long at all.

Userwhatevernumber · 13/03/2020 16:07

Sorry but schools remaining closed for an entire term? Between Easter and a September? What about exams?

Nah, doubt it.

LuluJakey1 · 13/03/2020 16:07

There are 3 weeks left before Easter holidays start up here in the north-east. I think they might try to keep schools open until then. After Easter have them open only for Y11 and Post-16 exams with exam desks very widely spaced.

LuluJakey1 · 13/03/2020 16:08

Notfor Y11 and Post-16 lessons but just as exam venues.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 13/03/2020 16:11

Closing for a month for easter?! Where?!

If schools close the assumption will be that we're not going off to parks and things wont it?

LuluJakey1 · 13/03/2020 16:13

Then exam boards will just move the grade boundaries down so there is no evident fall in standards- however, as disadvantaged children will be more affected than middle class children by nit having all the support schools provide in exam run-up period, their results will still be worse and middle-class/leafy suburb schools will do better.

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 17:05

@Selfsettling3 really? Didn’t know that, I thought the holidays were the same everywhere.

@fedup21 @SquashedFlyBiscuit
my mistake, I thought it was the same everywhere.

fedup21 · 13/03/2020 17:08

@Reginabambina schools in England have never had a 4-week Easter holiday as far as I know-I’m intrigued to know why you thought they did.

LoadsaBlusher · 13/03/2020 17:12

I think schools will be kept open until start of Easter holidays ( 2 weeks time in Scotland )
Then I don’t think they will reopen until August at end of usual Scottish holidays

Nicola sturgeon mentioned in her speech yesterday that when they put lockdown type measures in it wouldnt just be for a matter of weeks - it would be until the peak

If the peak is May / June I just can’t see Scottish schools reopening for few weeks in June
