When do we think schools will shut and likely turn of closure.

I don’t like either Nicola Sturgeon or Boris Johnson but I thought NS got it right with her press conference outlying the finding is the meeting and the plan for the foreseeable future. I didn’t agree with the outcome but I was a lot more reassured by her speech than I was by the wally BJ who waffled on with no real clarification or plan.

Are the schools likely to close, how soon do we think this will happen and for how long...

Surely if school closure is imminent the more time you can give people to put childcare, change of work plans, etc in place the better...

I think when staff can’t turn up schools will be forced to close.

Kuponut · 13/03/2020 17:20

I’ve just posted a thread....Uni of Leicester has cancelled lectures for my son from Monday.

Frigging De Montfort seem determined to keep going regardless.

whatsthebestname · 13/03/2020 17:21

My kids have all been given password resets for online learning, jotters have been handed in early for marking and for new homework to be given and I believe our council (in Scotland) are planning to close from next Friday.

A friend who works in a primary school in our town said they heard yesterday and to get all of the pupils prepared. No timeframe for going back though.

Jackrusselsarecute · 13/03/2020 17:26

I'm despairing. Why aren't we following Europe and closing? It's like BoJo has some different agenda warning us that people will die. There must be a reason so may other counties have made a bold and brave decision

LOLeater · 13/03/2020 17:33

University of Bristol now closed.

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 17:38

@fedup21 my child is off for nearly a month, I assumed it was the same everywhere.

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 17:39

@Jackrusselsarecute closing schools is very risky as people might use it as a holiday opportunity and spread the virus to previously unaffected populations or people might use grave parents as childcare thus exposing large numbers of vulnerable people to the virus.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 13/03/2020 17:42

Teachers can all just get coronavirus because it will minimise the inconvenience 😢

Why are teachers any more at risk than anyone else? What about everyone else that still has to go to work?

Frouby · 13/03/2020 17:46

I personally think they will close next friday. Dds school hasn't released anything or mentioned it at school (according to dd) until today when they sent an email saying we are preparing, ongoing situation blah blah blah.

Have sort of unofficially withdrawn ds until.after easter. He's 6. We can HE for a fortnight if they don't close next week.

BiscuitTin3 · 13/03/2020 17:47

I think they might stick an extra week onto the end of the Easter holidays. I don’t think they will do anything more than that. I certainly don’t think they will close until September!

Nikki360 · 13/03/2020 17:55

I'm in Scotland and I'm hearing from various people who work in schools that it looks likely we will close schools as early as next Friday. I think Nicola Sturgeon will do it. Thank God we have her she's a lot calmer and much more reassuring than Boris

Aria20 · 13/03/2020 18:42

My primary children in Greater London came home with log in details for google classroom to do online learning when the schools close, we have 3 weeks left to Easter holidays, I think we might close next Friday and have an extra 2 weeks off for Easter. Then reassess. However, the school weekly newsletter had the usual stuff about attendance and unauthorised attendance resulting in fines... and just 7 days off drops below 95% attendance...I suspect their attendance records are going to take a big hit if everyone is self isolating for a week with a cough!

effingterrified · 13/03/2020 19:01

Nat6999 - do you live in England or Scotland? Or somewhere else? And is the school you were talking about private or state?

I'd really like it if English state schools were closing soon.

Apple1971 · 13/03/2020 19:07

I’m a teacher. I have a feeling that we are preparing for flakier from next week. We are putting plans in place for online learning and ensuring we can communicate with all students.

Nothing confirmed - our headteacher is fantastic and would tell us if she knew more I’m sure so it’s just a hunch.

I think we would close for 4 weeks (2 of them being easter hols)

Babyfairy0923 · 13/03/2020 19:12

They’ve already said closures would need to be for 14-16 weeks!! I’m thinking I’m the next week or 2.

Davincitoad · 13/03/2020 19:12

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat it’s the way it’s been presented. We are needed to babysit kids but we should accept we will get it as part of this to minimise the impact. Even though everywhere else has closed down everything.

www.theguardian.com/education/2020/mar/13/coronavirus-school-closures-uk-gdp-ministers-warned

Looks like it is being discussed.

Chocolatedaim · 13/03/2020 19:16

Really surprised some of you think schools will close from Easter to sept.

I expect two weeks at most to be tacked on to either side of the Easter hols

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 19:21

Why?

I expect two weeks at most to be tacked on to either side of the Easter hols

It wouldn't be enough.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/03/2020 19:26

I think teachers are slightly higher at risk due to the close contact we come into with so many children every day. If they think that the average infected person spreads it to 2, then kids in classes may spread it to those next to them on their table, but not necessarily to others in their class if they don't get close enough...but a teacher, particularly primary, gets close enough to each and every one of their pupils on a daily basis to help with work etc.

PirateWeasel · 13/03/2020 19:27

No chance will schools close for a whole term. Most parents off work looking after kids just won't be able to survive for longer than a couple of weeks on the £94 a week the government are proposing to pay. Businesses would fold, people would lose their jobs, houses would be repossessed. It would be madness.

SarHar · 13/03/2020 19:31

LOLeater University of Bristol isn't closed, teaching is ending early for Easter

www.bristol.ac.uk/students/coronavirus/

"The University is not closing and term starts again on Monday 20 April 2020."

Discobar · 13/03/2020 19:37

Fully expect schools to be closed until September once the closures happen

Namelesswonder · 13/03/2020 19:40

As others have said, in Scotland NS has told us school, when the close, will be closed for the rest of the academic year. So for us, till mid August. They won’t just be closing for a few weeks.

IAmcuriousyellow · 13/03/2020 19:42

If schools are closed who goes to work - what will happen to the nhs if the vast majority of staff are at home minding the children?
