When do we think schools will shut and likely turn of closure.

I don’t like either Nicola Sturgeon or Boris Johnson but I thought NS got it right with her press conference outlying the finding is the meeting and the plan for the foreseeable future. I didn’t agree with the outcome but I was a lot more reassured by her speech than I was by the wally BJ who waffled on with no real clarification or plan.

Are the schools likely to close, how soon do we think this will happen and for how long...

Surely if school closure is imminent the more time you can give people to put childcare, change of work plans, etc in place the better...

@katexoxo I think you sound like an excellent teacher and you are clearly in the right profession.

newusername2009 · 13/03/2020 21:38

@Katexoxo I hopes you’re one of my children’s teachers. I appreciate all those teachers who are not considering this a holiday and putting the effort in to do the best they can.

Yes everyone needs to look after themselves but we should also be looking after each other in the best way we can.

SpokeTooSoon · 13/03/2020 21:38

My money is on closing on Friday 27th March and reopening Mon 27th April, which is a week either side of Easter. It’s the least disruptive option. Independent schools are largely finishing on 26th/27th anyway so it’s a week extra either side for state schools

Cam77 · 13/03/2020 21:40

@Lifeisgenerallyfun
We have an estimated 5,000-10,000 infections. Funny how Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China etc not to mention the rest of Eurpope... arent so into the balancing act bullshit and in the case of the aforementioned Asian countries have succeeeded in reducing infections to a trickle, while we are talking about mass deaths.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 13/03/2020 21:43

Yes and refer back to my previous comment about timing! Think it through!

Fruitsaladjelly · 13/03/2020 21:43

Why would schools close unless too many staff were infected at once? Children need to get it, we want children to get it, there will be disruption but closures make no sense

Davincitoad · 13/03/2020 21:44

We have been told to prepare online work however no mention what happens with staff sickness. I will do all
I can to set work however if I get too ill not sure what will happen.

CatEnabler · 13/03/2020 21:44

@katexoxo omfg I've heard it all now 🤣

Livelovebehappy · 13/03/2020 21:44

I don’t think schools should close - if there are any vulnerable children who have underlying health conditions, then they should be kept at home. Older retired people should pretty much self isolate to avoid catching the virus, as should anyone with medical issues which might mean severe illness if they catch it. The rest of us can cope with it if we catch it. It seems from the healthy ones who’ve had it that it more or less lasts for a couple of days and that’s it. Apparently you can’t catch it a second time either. I think the majority of us would fall into the category of nothing more than feeling a bit crap for a couple of days and would be preferable to having your work place closed down with no pay causing massive financial issues, or having schools closed and trying to organise extended childcare or lose your job.

Bowerbird5 · 13/03/2020 21:46

The are on alert now for possible closure in our area. One closed yesterday.

DonkeyKong2019 · 13/03/2020 21:47

Our LA seem to be preparing towards next Friday. Lots of sudden movement prepping wise.

Our school has just cancelled all trips, assemblies, extra curriculars. Breaks and lunches fully staggered.

Closures due to staff shortages will be rotated between years.

There has definitely been a plan made

Selfsettling3 · 13/03/2020 21:48

@Fruitsaladjelly have you read any of the thread? For some of out children Covid 19 will kill them. Children are super spreaders we don’t want everyone to get it at once we need waves of people being ill so the NHS is less overwhelmed. We want people to be ill outside the flu session when there is less strain on the NHS. We want people to get it when the the virus as mutated and therefore is less likely to be fatal.

Katexoxo · 13/03/2020 21:48

@CatEnabler heard it all how? How are you suggesting I spend my time??

Joyfulljenny · 13/03/2020 21:48

I’ve just watched the channel 4 documentary on it and we should be shutting down. It’s going to massively over burden the NHS and we’re going to be in a bad way with our elderly folk and the other vulnerable people.

Italy didn’t take quick enough measures and we are now doing the same. The herd idea is ridiculous and basically throws all our vulnerable people under the bus.

The U.K. has more cases now then Wuhan did when they closed the area down. The government are putting economy before vulnerable people

OrchidJewel · 13/03/2020 21:49

Katexoxo I totally agree with you

Oakmaiden · 13/03/2020 21:53

@CatEnabler

Do you mean to be so rude? head tilt

Joyfulljenny · 13/03/2020 21:54

Cam77 a lot of the countries who initially closed schools are a lot further on in the virus cycle than we are so it made sense to close schools at that particular time, just as we will at the right time too. It’s all a balancing act

And it was too late then. Have you not seen the figures of the other countries?

Oakmaiden · 13/03/2020 21:56

Well, we have moved beyond the point China were at - and we definitely don't want to leave it til we get to the state Italy is in... so... when IS the right time?

I don't expect you to be able to answer any more than I can. I am still just hoping BJ and his advisors aren't pulling numbers out of their backsides.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/03/2020 21:58

‘The rest of us can cope if we catch it’😂

Kids spread their germs everywhere. That’s why they need closing. Bully for you if you can cope with catching it. What about the sick, the elderly, and the rest who can’t deal with it? What about the teachers and other staff who work in these places riddles with germs? Can they ‘cope’ with catching it?

Talk about selfish!

RobinHumphries · 13/03/2020 21:59

There are no plans to close schools yet. They are far more likely to tell the over 65/ 70’s (decision hasn’t been made on the age) to self isolate to the extent that they should stay in their homes. However the supply and support network hasn’t been set up yet to support this.

FlamingoAndJohn · 13/03/2020 22:00

I think it will be next Friday.

Of course schools have said that they might need to close earlier if they don’t have the staff to keep the school open. Which means that school staff will end up getting the blame.

gluteustothemaximus · 13/03/2020 22:01

I suspect their attendance records are going to take a big hit if everyone is self isolating for a week with a cough

We've got specific codes to use in this instance (at our school), so attendance won't be affected (for us anyway). It'll only be affected if you decide (without any illness or reason) to self isolate.

PerpetualCircle · 13/03/2020 22:05

Agree that we will probably get a longer Easter hol, but hope it’s not for months. I don’t understand why Ireland closed their school so suddenly, they have only 70 cases and one death.

CatEnabler · 13/03/2020 22:08

@katexoxo well I would suggest getting ready for bed at 10pm for a start so you can get to work at least an hour ahead of our contracted times to prepare for whatever the day holds yet be refreshed and on your game to deliver high quality first teaching, whilst making sure you're alert enough to deal with any issues with a clear refreshed and balanced mind. Mistakes happen when you're tired. Big mistakes. I don't know if you're primary or secondary, I hope not primary as little ones really really need you to be wide eyed, bushy tailed and alert for their safety.
My OH on the other hand suggests tinder. 😉
