Chemo. No hospital bed for DH.

So DH’s medical team say he needs an inpatient bed now.
We’re stuck in the outpatients hotel and no bed forthcoming because of corona. He’s rapidly becoming neutropenic and there are no beds available.
This is actually happening today, now. I am stressed beyond belief.

This is awful. I think some hospitals are being categorised as hospitals where no coronavirus should be sent. Could he be transferred to one of those, as presumably they are not clearing out.

A&E side rooms are reasonably quiet and out of the way, so it might not be too bad. I spent a day on one recently and it was ok.

So sorry you're going through this, desperately hoping you get a solution and some relief soon. Flowers

madcatladyforever · 13/03/2020 14:41

Where are you OP, I'm in Somerset where we've only had one case of coronavirus and we've had a few transfers from other places. It's only 3 hours from London and 2 from Birmingham a really easy trip.
I often go down to London for the day - or did before all this started.
We have locums who come from Birmingham daily.
Please ask if he can have his treatment somewhere else.

Babyroobs · 13/03/2020 14:43

So sorry op. Hope a bed becomes available soon. Can they give Iv's in the out patients dept .

AmIAPenguin · 13/03/2020 14:47

@madcatladyforever unfortunately you have a lot more cases, they stopped testing people several weeks ago apart from no direct contacts, even refusing people saying they had all the symptoms or recent travel abroad, so it is likely as wide spread everywhere and with you already.

OP, are there any private hospitals nearby you could get him admitted to? They are all single rooms and at least some basic medical care directed from the NHS site? I know not everyone has the money for this, but would friends/family help? I would if you were my friend and asked.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 13/03/2020 14:47

I'm so sorry. No wonder you are stressed. Hope they find you a bed soon.

OneOfTheGrundys · 13/03/2020 14:54

Big consultant emailed. They think he’s ok here for another day. Then we’ll be moved up the list. Which is a different take on what they said this morning.
So stressful. I simply can’t think straight.

It’s also that his disease is so rare he needs to stay nhs because it’s so complex. Like, only a few drs in the world treat it.

@oneofthegrundys
I have been neutropenic before. Are you in a position to monitor his temp? As long as he doesn't go too high it may be the best place for him for now.

AParallelUniverse · 13/03/2020 15:03

I'm so sorry op. You must be out of your mind with worry. I hope he gets a bed soon.

Thinkingabout1t · 13/03/2020 15:31

Can you contact the patient liaison people, PALS, at your hospital? There may be things they can do to help, eg to make DH more comfortable, or fetch things you need if you're having to stay longer. Also, don't hold back on asking friends for help, even just for comfort and to talk to. Brew

I do hope it all goes well for DH and for you. Sending you love and best wishes.

FrankieManca · 13/03/2020 15:38

A dreadful situation for you and your DH.
Sending a hand hold.
Glad that there is a little glimmer of a more constructive way forward from the Big Consultant.
Thinking of you.

OneOfTheGrundys · 13/03/2020 17:08

Due to the big consultant pushing very hard on his behalf he has been admitted. Thank God.
There is no visiting allowed with the exception of a single, registered visitor who has been screened. And even then only exceptional circumstances. So I will be leaving him here to face it all on his own. I know he has the nurses and they will be brilliant but I want to be there for him so much.
Thank you for your kind words x
