Cancelled our holiday!

Had a holiday planned for the Easter hols and made the decision to cancel it last night 😞 genuinely think it's for the best as all this is only going to get worse but I'm so disappointed today! It's been a busy/stressful year so far and was looking forward to it.

Anyone else chose to cancel theirs too?

Yep- although ours isn’t until June, our payment is due April 1st, for now we’d just lose our deposit. Gutted!

ihaveaquestionplease · 13/03/2020 07:55

I have a holiday booked for June. I'm not cancelling until advised to do so either by our government or the country I'm visiting government.

Where were you going on holiday? Unless it was to one of the countries worse off than us then I'd probably just have gone.

Aebj · 13/03/2020 07:55

We haven’t cancelled yet but we probably will. I’m a casual worker and likely to loose my job on Monday. Thankfully we haven’t booked the flight yet. My wages would of paid for the flight

PrettyTricky · 13/03/2020 07:55

Yep. Italy cancelled. Absolutely gutted, but moreso for the poor people of Italy and everything they are going through, and what is inevitably coming to us.
Am currently in such a state of anxiety that I can barely hold a conversation about anything else.

iwanttoshakesomeppl · 13/03/2020 07:56

I also have a June holiday booked not cancelling until the government say not to travel or the country I'm going to is on lockdown hopefully I will get a refund then.

ValleyoftheHorses · 13/03/2020 07:56

We will be doing but waiting to see if either Spain close their borders or Jet2 start to waive date change fee (easyJet are).
We will rebook for 2021.

DirtyDancing · 13/03/2020 07:58

@0nwardsAndUpwards really gutting and tough choice, but totally the right call IMO. Luckily ours was just an air bnb break in the UK so we loose very little! For those with bigger holidays it’s such a shame

Spied · 13/03/2020 08:00

Cancelled the balerics in June.
To be honest I'm feeling relief.
Only lost deposit. If had been going to loose more I'd still have cancelled.

Brumbrumbrumbrum · 13/03/2020 08:01

We are due to do Spain in july at a hefty cost. 2.5k balance due next month, I can't afford to lose this money and I don't believe they'll cancel for us so we get a refund because they'll be trying to save tourism etc, but it'll be bad enough that we don't want to go. Tbh i really don't want to go now.

cocomelon23 · 13/03/2020 08:02

I've got a holiday booked abroad for June. I'm not cancelling. I'll wait for them to cancel.

Teateaandmoretea · 13/03/2020 08:09

I cancelled earlier in the week as the balance was due today. The world is chaotic right now and taking children abroad is daft, a weight has lifted tbh. I'll rebook if and when it calms down, or go somewhere UK and rural instead.

IAmcuriousyellow · 13/03/2020 08:13

I have a holiday cottage In the UK and have had a guest cancel - but only one. I was sad for my guest because I understand why she’s worried, but my place is a self isolators paradise! Get your shopping in and you don’t need to be within a meter of anybody else for weeks on end! All other bookings intact - so far. We will see.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2020 08:18

I can't afford to lose this money

This is the sunk cost fallacy. It's tough, it's disappointing, it may be quite gutting but any money we have available for a holiday is money we can afford to lose. Time off work may be a necessity, a holiday is a luxury.

We had a holiday to Sicily in May booked - we guessed what might happen and cancelled over a month ago before the main payment was due. One of the reasons we took it seriously early is that DH has risk factors including a heart condition - we had to cancel our first attempt to go to Sicily two years ago because he was ill. We've had to cancel other holidays before because of medical problems - it used to bend me out of shape a bit, I really do understand the disappointment losing something you've worked hard for and are looking forward to but I've had to learn to be more philosophical about it.

DingleberryRose · 13/03/2020 08:22

Anyone else chose to cancel theirs too?

Nope, fully intending on still going if I’m able to.

Morgan12 · 13/03/2020 08:26

Booked for start of July to Menorca.

No way am I cancelling. I booked 18months ago and its fully paid!

If they cancel me I'll get surely my money back, or maybe even change to next Summer. If they don't cancel then damn right I'll be going. This is my first holiday in four years and I can't just throw £5,000 away!

Jowak1 · 13/03/2020 08:28

I was going to Seville with my mum and sister in June and we have cancelled. My mum was worrying lots and she has underlying health conditions so it wasn't worth it! We wouldn't have been looking forward it and would only have been worrying. We can always go next year hopefully.

abitoflight · 13/03/2020 08:29

Tenerife booked for 30 March. I hope they cancel tbh. I can't bear the idea of an airport or a plane atm

Nirvana1979 · 13/03/2020 08:32

We have majorca booked for July, not paying anymore into it at the moment. Final balance due 5th May...will see what the sitaution is then but no plans to cancel as yet.

Straycatstrut · 13/03/2020 08:33

Ours is at Haven this year, start of June, only a couple of hours drive. It's non refundable as it stands but it's a few hundred I can't afford to lose. If it's at it's peak we won't be going obviously. First Holiday for us all in years and we really deserved it Sad

Feel really bad for everyone with weddings arranged and babies due - the last place I'd want to be is hospital.

0nwardsAndUpwards · 13/03/2020 08:34

We managed to get the majority of our money back by cancelling now instead of in a few days time, so felt like a no-brainier tbh.

I don't regret it, everything is chaotic at the minute and although I wish everyone luck who is still planning on going on their trips, I can only see it getting worse.

I read somewhere that we're apparently four weeks behind Italy (don't know the reliability of that!) and that's when we'd be due to go, it just felt unnecessary taking two young children abroad when there's all this going on. And I'm actually fairly relaxed about the whole thing - other than washing my hands more often nothing has really changed for us.

OP posts:
AhoyMrBeaver · 13/03/2020 08:36

We're waiting. Our insurance is only going to pay out if we actually can't go, so there's no benefit in preemptive cancellation.

Teateaandmoretea · 13/03/2020 08:37

I have exactly the same mindset onwards and I just lost deposit, it felt like a no brainier tbh. I have a solo trip booked too that is still on but it is generally less worrying as it doesn't involve disappointed children etc if I just don't go at the last minute, plus there is no financial advantage to cancelling that one.

0nwardsAndUpwards · 13/03/2020 08:39

@AhoyMrBeaver I can appreciate that. Luckily our flights were cheap, hotel was the biggest expense and I dare say we've been refunded 80-85% of the cost of that, so it doesn't feel too bad Grin

HemlockStarglimmer · 13/03/2020 08:39

I have told my teenager that she won't be going to Spain to visit her grandparents at Easter. My biggest concern is that she may not be able to get back and it is GCSE time.

Cameron2012 · 13/03/2020 08:40

Yes, we are meant to be going to Italy in May. Have tried to contact EasyJet but as you can imagine it is very difficult to get through as is live chat and Facebook messenger .we have found an email address and will cancel that way so there is proof we have.
We will lose our deposit but that is simply nothing nex5 to wha5 the Italians are going through.
It is incomprehensible and frightening
