Cancelled our holiday!

Had a holiday planned for the Easter hols and made the decision to cancel it last night 😞 genuinely think it's for the best as all this is only going to get worse but I'm so disappointed today! It's been a busy/stressful year so far and was looking forward to it.

Anyone else chose to cancel theirs too?

Booked for Rome on the 9th April which I've cancelled. Got a full refund on the AirB&B and I've postponed the flights with Jet2 until September which cost a £45 fee.

rosie1959 · 13/03/2020 09:40

We have a UK holiday booked for May
I checked the hotels website this morning they are being very sensible about this and if any party member has been advised by a doctor not to travel they will only charge a small admin fee
We have to pay £1600 in April but if we cannot travel due to coronavirus the holiday can be moved or refunded if travel insurance is not covering it
I have had a few emails from Hilton Holiday Inn ect who are also being more flexible We often book a short break on offer which is usually non refundable but they are now being sensible about this
Hotels obviously dont want to be closed down due to an infected guest
Hope this makes sense it's a worrying time for all

Hol to Cyprus end of August. Cyprus has put the UK in catagory 2 which means self quarantine for 14 days so what is the point if we are stuck in hotel for 2 weeks? I am going to cancel today. will lose £400 deposit. If by some miracle this all went away we could re-book or even look into getting a small cottage/caravan in the UK for a few days, not far from home.

crosspelican · 13/03/2020 09:44

We're still going away, but we have a house there, and because of the nature of our work, we can stay on if there is any lock-down there.

safetydance1 · 13/03/2020 09:48

I have a holiday to Cape Verde planned next Wednesday - waiting for developments over the next few days as to if we can go or not. The person I am travelling with is still keen to go, I'm very worried though - what would you do?

SeaNymph · 13/03/2020 09:52

I wouldn't go to Cape Verde at all, have heard they do not have good health care.

BillyAndTheSillies · 13/03/2020 09:57

Need to decide over the next 48 hours whether to pay the full balance on our holiday to Greece in June or cancel and lose the deposit.

It just seems a lot to pay out when there just seems like so much uncertainty.

We'd planned lots of big trips, more expensive than we'd usually do this year because DS1 starts school in September and we could take advantage of going in term time.

If we do cancel and things get better, then we will book a last minute deal. Or go somewhere in the UK instead.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 13/03/2020 10:00

DH and I are still going away as usual, weekend for our wedding anniversary in April in a Warwickshire hotel still going ahead. I have a girls weekend away booked for the end of this month, as far as I’m aware it’s all still going ahead as planned.
Weekend in a hotel in Nottingham for a wedding happening in May. Long weekend in August away with friends and family holiday with adult teach and grandkids still happening in August. We’ve not yet booked our ‘big’ summer holiday, but when we do, we will definitely go.

SeaNymph · 13/03/2020 10:00

I have just cancelled. I am so sad. Sad

Just read that Cyprus are taking visitors from the UK to a government facility for 14 days on arrival for quarantine. No idea what the situation will be like in a few months time.

Flumpywoo · 13/03/2020 10:03

We are meant to be going to St Lucia in May half term and so far have only paid £400 deposit and £95 airport car parking but can get £80 of parking back I think. Balance is due in a month and at the moment there are no cases of Coronavirus there, but St Lucia has banned anyone from China and Italy from entering the country. So if we are going to be like Italy in 4 weeks, they might ban the UK too, and insurance will only pay out if the FCO advise against all but essential travel. We have a few weeks to decide but would you think it's sensible to lose the deposit, rather than risk losing the whole lot, which is almost £4k!!

copycopypaste · 13/03/2020 10:10

We're supposed to be going to Tenerife in August, I've put £300 deposit and the remainder to be paid at the end of May. Don't quite know what to do, pay it and if it gets cancelled hopefully the insurance will pay out (£5000 holiday) or lose the £300 and take the hit

TheresWaldo · 13/03/2020 10:13

@fuzzygoose - don't travel to Brussels. All bars, restaurants, cafes etc will be shut til 3rd April.

TheresWaldo · 13/03/2020 10:14

We were going to Naples in April. I cancelled already.

0nwardsAndUpwards · 13/03/2020 10:21

Quite a mixed bag here!

As I said, I totally understand people still going, even with kids. Guess we all just have to weigh it up for ourselves 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
FuzzyGoose · 13/03/2020 10:24

Thanks @TheresWaldo that's the exact reason we've cancelled x

IlCommissarioMontalbano · 13/03/2020 10:28

Yup, just cancelled Japan for the 4 of us from April 3rd- booked a year ago! Gutted. JAL have been brilliant though and full flight monies refunded. All hotels bar one refunded too on booking.com as I always take the option for the late cancellation, but we probably won't get the money back for one of them and that's £500!!

It is what it is unfortunately for us and I feel more sorry for anyone who has caught this horrible virus, and all livelihoods affected too

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/03/2020 10:28

@MadisonAvenue Hurrah for Jet2 being sensible!
TUI are still expecting our April 6th holiday to Italy to be going ahead and won't discuss changing or refunding it.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/03/2020 10:30

Cottage holiday booked for Devon in May and will be going unless the site it is on closes down. Should be easy to keep ourselves to ourselves there so not very worried about that.

estelle78 · 13/03/2020 10:32

@dragonmama - genuine question, what type of holiday is the 10k trip, is it a luxury place and quite a few of you going?

We were looking at holidays for August back in January, but then had the bad news that dh who is the main earner is being made redundant so holiday plans went out the window for this year. Even without the redundancy happening we wouldn't have booked anything now given the current situation. I have underlying health conditions plus we have a young daughter so wouldn't have taken the risk.

Sunshinesky1981 · 13/03/2020 10:32

Am thinking the USA has already thought of people from EU countries trying to get in via the UK. You need an Etsa to travel which will have your home address and passport number and issuing country on. American immigration officers are scarily strict at the best of times

madcatladyforever · 13/03/2020 10:33

Well done everyone who is going on holiday - you clearly do not care who dies because of you. You just go ahead and have a lovely time.
never mind all of the families who have lost loved ones and are devastated by that loss.

madcatladyforever · 13/03/2020 10:33

You're probably the ones who bought all the loo roll and pasta too. I can't tell you how much I despise you.

We were due to go to Florida on the 27th 😔 as only the parks are closed if we don't go we'll lose our flight and accommodation costs. Also wdw are only offering to honour tickets at a later date - no refunds!!! Their hotels are still open so for part of our holiday we'd be staying at a Disney hotel with no parks. We're all gutted.

JorisBonson · 13/03/2020 10:37

Going to Seville on honeymoon at the end of June and I shan't be changing any plans unless told otherwise by BA or the FCO
