Cancelled our holiday!

Had a holiday planned for the Easter hols and made the decision to cancel it last night 😞 genuinely think it's for the best as all this is only going to get worse but I'm so disappointed today! It's been a busy/stressful year so far and was looking forward to it.

Anyone else chose to cancel theirs too?

@Teateaandmoretea yes the children definitely swayed the decision for us! DH and I may have risked it but we'd feel awful if they fell poorly abroad, it's no holiday is it. Going to break the news to them tonight.

We are due to go on a city break to Brussels next week and we are 99% sure we won't be going :( luckily our hotel is refundable so we won't be missing out on all of our money. I'm definitely not panicking about what's going to happen because that won't help anyone but I think cancelling our travel plans is the best thing for us x

ihaveaquestionplease · 13/03/2020 08:42

If the peak is around the time you were meant to be going then I'd say that's a good time to leave the county

Emcont · 13/03/2020 08:43

Majorca booked for mid June. Not cancelling unless we are told we cannot go.

AuntieMarys · 13/03/2020 08:50

Greece booked for early May...holding fast. If Jet2 cancel, we will be refunded .

0nwardsAndUpwards · 13/03/2020 08:56

@ihaveaquestionplease but will the risk be less where I'm travelling? That's what I've weighed up. And if any of us are going to be poorly, I'd still rather it be here than abroad.

We run a holiday destination in the UK. I'm not sure people understand that insurance companies in the UK are not paying out to business. They are saying even with forced shutdown they won't cover. We have business interruption insurance but as covid19 is a new dieases they will not cover anyone! We can not afford to take the hit so will be unfortunately having to enforce our payment policy (full payment a month in advance). We will be asking people to claim on thier holiday insurance. Just a note we are actually a small charity and this is likely to bankrupt us if it carrys on all summer. We would be better with an early lockdown (now until Easter) then we would hopefully be looking at keeping open and running for the height of the summer.

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2020 09:03

My son has already had an email from Jet2 saying that his holiday in Italy in June is cancelled.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2020 09:04

Insideoutandback - you, and other people in the hospitality sector are the people I feel sorry for.

We can all afford to lose a holiday, even one we've saved up for and we really looking forward to. Your business, and so many others, may not be able to afford the inevitable downturn in business. Hopefully some holidaymakers will be able to claim on their insurance and be able to have some sort of U.K., break instead.

Teateaandmoretea · 13/03/2020 09:07

onwards my kids were fine tbh. They are all aware of the stuff going on and May half term is still a way off in their little minds.

salcombebabe · 13/03/2020 09:08

I’m due to go to Sweden next Friday but last night I rearranged flights til July. Just didn’t want to be in a confined plane with God knows who may have the virus!

Teateaandmoretea · 13/03/2020 09:09

If the peak is around the time you were meant to be going then I'd say that's a good time to leave the county

Yeah I'm sure we'd be really welcome in the other country 🤦🏻‍♀️

Duckingell · 13/03/2020 09:14

I want to cancel our flights to USA.

Not due to go until the end of June but I am worried.

I paid quite a lot for these flights (had very cheap flights in the past thanks to Thomas Cook!) but there's no option to change or cancel- yet.

I haven't booked anything else yet related to the trip - airport parking, hotels, internal flights or hotels. I don't want to throw away any more money.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/03/2020 09:14

I’m was going to turkey so not many cases- my fear was being quarantined there and being at e mercy of a health care system I know nothing about. I also have a 2 year old who needs daily medication, I couldn’t handle being stranded there.

WomanIsTaken · 13/03/2020 09:15

Salcombe, I am going in August, hoping it has calmed down by then. Fingers crossed for us.

Sunshinesky1981 · 13/03/2020 09:15

We are keeping fingers crossed but not hopeful. We are due to go to Orlando in the summer holidays. It's the trip of a lifetime and have been saving for years. We are supposed to be there for 3 weeks ,splitting time between a onsite hotel at Disneyworld and a onsite hotel at Universal ,so the whole reason for the trip is to go to the parks. We paid a huge amount to stay on site so we had the extra benefits for the parks and the fact we dont have a car so could use their transport. Disney and universal have announced they are shutting the parks, but keeping the hotels open. Hopefully they will reopen by the time we go and we are still allowed /safe to go. At the moment we would be looking at going and spending 3 weeks staying in a hotel but just spending time at a pool or trying to uber arrange buses to shops etc. It doesn't look like insurance would pay out as we can still fly and hotel is open, but it means we have paid around 10k for the type of holiday we really didn't want . It's easy to say just dont go and write the money off, but we have been saving and planning this trip for over 3 years. I feel heartbroken for people who are due to go there now and facing this, at least we have some shred of hope. Although it would be easier if they would just shut all together and ban travel as at least we may have a chance of getting some money back.. I know how selfish that sounds Sad

ihaveaquestionplease · 13/03/2020 09:17

Yeah I'm sure we'd be really welcome in the other country 🤦🏻‍♀️

Well obviously we might not be allowed in but op was talking from the point of view that she's worried about her kids health.

roarfeckingroar · 13/03/2020 09:17

Had to cancel a trip to Italy for my birthday. Not ideal.

KaptenKrusty · 13/03/2020 09:18

won't be cancelling - well there wouldn't be any point as i'd get no money back - but I will if the FCO advice changed!

So i'm waiting it out - if the plane goes though - I will be on it!

Teateaandmoretea · 13/03/2020 09:19

Well obviously we might not be allowed in but op was talking from the point of view that she's worried about her kids health.

It's not just about being allowed in, it's about people being suspicious/ hostile. One of the kids getting a sniffle and not being allowed on the plane on the way back.

heyjoeyitsestelle · 13/03/2020 09:19

@Sunshinesky1981
We are due to fly April 12th ☹️

Have contacted our flight operator who are allowing free re booking. Our villa owner has said the same. And the tickets valid for a year.
Not doing anything just yet. I imagine if they reopen parks before we go we'll still be going. I don't know. Shit situation all round.

Jespers · 13/03/2020 09:20

Yeah, we're not going to the US to see the family. Gutted but honestly, what can we do? T~rump might close the borders and we get stuck, the plane will be full of international travellers ( many from Italy/Spain/France I think as they can't travel direct anymore), half the stuff will be closed when we get there, I would imagine...

WorriedAboutMom · 13/03/2020 09:21

We were meant to go to Turkey in 3 weeks with 3 DC under 5. I think they've only got one official case there at the moment. We haven't cancelled yet but we've not done any packing/shopping either. We will probably wait until our flights are cancelled so we can claim.

NewNameGuy · 13/03/2020 09:23

""So i'm waiting it out - if the plane goes though - I will be on it!"
Same here for Easter majorca

DragonMamma · 13/03/2020 09:25

We are all paid up for Easter in Spain. We go in 4 weeks.

We are also half paid up for £10k holiday to Greece in the middle of July. Praying we don’t get cancelled Sad
