Cancelled our holiday!

Had a holiday planned for the Easter hols and made the decision to cancel it last night 😞 genuinely think it's for the best as all this is only going to get worse but I'm so disappointed today! It's been a busy/stressful year so far and was looking forward to it.

Anyone else chose to cancel theirs too?

Yup! Have to do what's right though. Protecting yourself and vulnerable others. It wouldn't have been any fun anyway.

DeadBod · 13/03/2020 10:39

We have a holiday booked in europe for the end of this month. The country we are going to have closed all museums, schools etc but Jet2 are saying it's business as usual until the FCO say otherwise.
We haven't formally cancelled but we've already made the decision not to go.

Aworldofmyown · 13/03/2020 10:40

Madcatlady oh do fuck off dear. People are entitled to be disappointed and that doesn't mean we're not aware it could be worse. Everything can always be worse for someone, we're still allowed to feel.
If no travel at all was required then governments should have placed a total travel ban, people then wouldn't be worried about losing lots of money.

Elzbells · 13/03/2020 10:40

Going to Turkey last 2 weeks of August. The balance isn't due until June so will review then and see what the situation is.

I certainly won't be dropping £6k on it though if there is still uncertainty. I'd rather cancel and not go than lose the money.

I'm hoping that things will have peaked by then though and started to settle down.

Horses4 · 13/03/2020 10:43

I am in the middle of trying to rearrange a trip to London at Easter that I had organised for my daughters’ birthdays. Eldest was housebound for months last year and it was supposed to be something amazing to look forward to. Hopefully the hotel/trains/various activities will let us rebook.

0nwardsAndUpwards · 13/03/2020 10:54

@madcatladyforever travel hasn't been banned, as it stands everyone's allowed to make a decision based on their own factors.

I'm sorry if you have lost someone close to you, but it's already in this country. People going abroad aren't going to necessarily make that worse.

Had a very lovely holiday at Christmas new year. Was about to sort out summer (had lots of minor arguments with dp - were too late - we should have booked weeks ago - I don’t have time this week - you didn’t ever reply about that place in Crete etc etc). Now all is off the table. Have just bought wellies as I think most we’ll be doing is long walks/remote stuff here in uk.

JorisBonson · 13/03/2020 11:07

@horses4

I love and work in London. It's very much open for business.

heyjoeyitsestelle · 13/03/2020 11:11

@madcatladyforever
Dramatic much? Sounds like you're the one more likely to have been hoarding toilet roll and bathing in anti bac gel!

As pp have said. It's here already.

Horses4 · 13/03/2020 11:12

@JorisBonson Yes, but my daughter is immunosuppressed so I am not taking the chance.

JorisBonson · 13/03/2020 11:14

Sorry @horses4 must have missed that

Flyingpurplepeopleeater · 13/03/2020 11:30

Ironically the first time we have decided (and afforded) to go abroad in 8 years, due to go May. Had planned a cheap uk break for summer but will need to hold off doing anything about that as any sort of lock down will affect finances and have already lost a chunk of savings in an isa that will be now worth about 10p

bex45321 · 13/03/2020 11:32

We are going to Somerset tomorrow for a week, it's a 5 hour drive and I'm still debating whether to go or not!

dementedma · 13/03/2020 11:34

Cancelled planned trip to France at end of March as friend I am visiting has serious health issues and I can't risk infecting her. So sad. it may have been the last chance to see her.Sad

Not cancelling trip to Poland in May - hoping it will be ok to travel than

TheFairyCaravan · 13/03/2020 11:48

We're going to Fuerteventura in May. I'm not cancelling, the only way we're not going is of we're told not to.

blue25 · 13/03/2020 11:52

I cant believe anyone would voluntarily go to an airport and get on a plane at the moment.

Everywhere is so unstable. The risk of getting ill and /or being stranded abroad is huge. Why would anyone risk it?

SorrelForbes · 13/03/2020 12:10

We've got flights booked to Tampa for 5 April. We can't cancel without losing a lot of money and we can't change the dates due to work committments (DH in the military). Unless the FCO advice changes or the airline cancels, we will be going.

HavenDilemma · 13/03/2020 12:47

@Straycatstrut We're going to Haven in June also. Even if it's at its peak - if the park is open, then we'll be going! We'll just stay in the caravan most of the time! No different from being at home then, really

24hoursfromtulsa · 13/03/2020 12:50

We decided anew weeks ago not to have a foreign holiday this year (normally go away in June). We could get ill anywhere I know, but don't want to chance being quarantined abroad.

Normalmumandwife · 13/03/2020 12:51

If you go, the bigger issue in lots of places is that they are totally empty. A friend has been visiting a few countries and she just gave up and moved on to the beach part of it as so many places were totally empty and everywhere shut

So go but you may find yourself alone

Interesting article for those thinking about traveling.

I’m not one to panic - I took a long haul flight earlier this week but think I’m changing my perspective.

0nwardsAndUpwards · 13/03/2020 15:03

@PegasusReturns that's a really interesting article, thanks for the link Smile makes me feel better about our cancellation.

Got a holiday booked for the first 2 weeks of May. Paid in full about 3 weeks ago (so before it really kicked off), holiday booked last June and insurance bought in September so should be early enough to cover coronavirus. Currently the country we are due to visit has no cases, so it’s not a risk of getting it but May is expected to be peak time here and I’m not sure they’ll want us. Or more accurately, they won’t close the borders to the UK due to economic reasons and there’ll be someone on the plane out who has CV and I end up in quarantine over there. Everyone is saying they’d rather be quarantined over there than over here but I think they are picturing us still going about our usual holiday rather than being stuck in a hotel room. I don’t see the point of paying what we’re paying to be stuck in a hotel room.

This was our first holiday in 4 years, lots of milestones and our fuck-it, all out holiday before kids. I have been really looking forward to this holiday. Now I just feel anxious. We’re relatively low risk and will be able to self isolate if necessary on our return, so I imagine if the FCO doesn’t stop us travelling, we’ll be going. Although I’ll be anxious for the first week to see if we’re quarantined (being quarantined in the second week isn’t quite as bad as we’ll have at least had a few days in the sun). Where we are going the country is dependent on tourism so that’ll be hard for them.

Although I have just seen that BA (who we are flying with) are cutting flights and jobs! Might be calling the travel agent at weekend!

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 14/03/2020 10:23

Does anyone have any thoughts about Cyprus? We are due to go in August

Flumpywoo · 14/03/2020 10:41

I think anyone from the UK has to be quarantined for 14 days if you go to Cyprus at the moment, so no point in going. But may be ok by August.
