I thought Cobra was meeting 1st thing this morning.
Not much of a sense of urgency is there?

AliciaWhiskers · 12/03/2020 12:07

Sorry if this has been asked before, but a question about self-isolating.

If I have symptoms, my understanding is that I have to be off work and self-isolate for 7 days. But I won't be tested, as I have no travel contact, so I won't know if it's coronavirus or not. So then what? Do I go back to work after a week, when presumably I'm still infectious if it is Covid-19?

(Hypothetical, currently, fingers crossed)

Fourducksate · 12/03/2020 12:08

Had an email from school to say PHE have not told schools to close, so anyone not attending is unauthorised absence.

Sounds like kids are being kept off already.

Sky news referred twice to a press conference "later" today

lemonjumper · 12/03/2020 12:09

Nicola Sturgeon has said at FMQs:

"The daily update of confirmed cases will be published at 2pm today as normal. I can tell Parliament we will see a sharp rise in cases today. We may also see further evidence of community transmission of Coronavirus."

"My view is the time is right to move to the Delay phase, and I believe the four UK nations will reach a decision on that this afternoon."

@newyearnewtwatname just bonkers. Thanks for the info

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 12/03/2020 12:10

anon I also agree about the lack of any sense of urgency. Still, the public school educated cabal, and those who have been allowed to join them on sufferance, are of course terribly busy, so a mere pandemic cannot affect the morning's business.

We plebs meanwhile, can just worry.

Trump in the first sentence of his speech last night mentioned a 'foreign virus'.
Says it all, really.

He's not interested in the death toll, he's already building a scenario of foreigners attacking Americans with their disease. It's all about re-election for him.

Ultimately for Trump the coronavirus is a plot against Trump.

Discobar · 12/03/2020 12:10

We wont be closing schools. Bbc news reporter outside number 10

JulietteLeGall · 12/03/2020 12:10

BBC are reporting UK not following other countries in closing schools.

Seems to be that the argument is that Brits won't listen to social distancing instructions anyway Hmm

My children don't listen to me, doesn't mean I just let them go feral.

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 12:10

@Bercows you'd be more than welcome. I've long fancied a windswept farm, not sure the DCs would be fans though, they're used to living in a city

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 12:10

Our school had a family assembly this AM. Apparently someone asked the deputy head who said they were not closing at the moment.

lemonjumper · 12/03/2020 12:11

Scottish FM: "The Health Secretary and I have decided this morning that we are minded that we will advise the cancellation, from the start of next week, of mass gatherings of 500 people or more."

All the journos seem to be unanimous that no measures will be announced today.
It's going to be more of the same- they'll just call it delay.

Kuponut · 12/03/2020 12:12

*Had an email from school to say PHE have not told schools to close, so anyone not attending is unauthorised absence.

One of mine is off today - she's full of cold. Would normally have sent her in but I don't want to be adding more germs circulating to the mix. No comeback from the school whatsoever - and it was the Head who picked up the phone when I rang in with the absence this morning.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 12:12

Correspondent on the BBC asking, what happens in Ireland on 30th March once the restrictions are lifted if there are still significant cases of the virus? Do they roll over? How long do you carry that on for?

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 12:12

Husband asked this AM, if schools are closed, would unis also shut? I said I wasn't sure the government can make them as they are private?

Comefromaway · 12/03/2020 12:14

My son just rang to tell me he's been issued with revision and study packs for every subject. It was just before 12 though. SO it sounds like his school are preparing just in case.

theschoolonthehill · 12/03/2020 12:14

silver the public voted him out. He remains in position until a new govt is formed.

He was only voted out because people wanted change. The same way as America voted Trump and the UK voted for Brexit. More of a protest vote against conservative ways in favour of a party that has no economic policy whatsoever. I’m so thankful Leo is still currently in charge.

I will pick up my children today and self isolate gladly. I am very worried for my elderly parent and my elderly in laws are beside themselves with worry. I hope these measures make them feel even a little reassured.

The big thing now is public transport. The workers are concerned. The commuters are concerned. So many rely on it to go anywhere.

Beebityboo · 12/03/2020 12:14

So if not now, when? They will have to close at some point as this shows no sign of slowing.
We should at least be given the choice.

Kuponut · 12/03/2020 12:16

Husband asked this AM, if schools are closed, would unis also shut? I said I wasn't sure the government can make them as they are private?

Ours is just pooh-poohing any concerns and pretending nothing's happening (we've got an FAQ page which gets "updated" daily - which is just that someone changes the date and time at the bottom of the page). They're outright denying anyone's gone from Italy/China etc to campus which is totally untrue and the university are aware of such and we've had no word on if people with vulnerable family members are able to stay away and study online or anything. We had a 90 second video message from the VC telling us that they've cleaned the door handles! You could not make any of this up really. We're also still being sent out onto community placements regardless (including care homes)

DigitalGhost · 12/03/2020 12:16

What happens to nursery fees if they government forces a closure? Not exactly fair to make people pay if they have to stay off work and look after their kids. But also how will the nursery staff get paid?

A bit of levity. This has been all over FB- looks like government's response is inspired by Yes, Minister...

silverdollarcity · 12/03/2020 12:17

Ireland is an island, as are we. If we don't do the same as them, it's difficult not to think that here in the UK we're being let down badly.

JemimaPuddleCat · 12/03/2020 12:17

The First Minister has said they are pushing for gatherings of 500 people or more to be cancelled. Yet it's not the time to close schools and universities (which surely many, many have more people onsite than that)
