Slovakia declares state of emergency due to coronavirus; schools, entertainment venues, and major airports closed, entry will be denied to most foreigners

@Fourducksate I agree. We should trust the leading medical and scientific experts worldwide particularly the World Health Organisation. I must disagree about Boris though. He has no science or medical expertise but he's very bright.

willdoitinaminute · 12/03/2020 14:50

All the deaths have been patients who were already unwell. From the reporting it has been suggested they were tested after being admitted to hospital with respiratory problems. Again without all the information you can only speculate.
If the virus has come in via half term skiers most will have been fit, healthy and mostly under 60 so possibly less likely to develop critical symptoms. We have no figures from the quarantined and self isolated potential carriers. There is so much information we don’t have so impossible to analyse the reported cases.

NewYearNewTwatName · 12/03/2020 14:50

I’m not privy to the exact thinking of ministers, but the general thrust of it seems sound. There is no way to really prevent the virus spreading across the UK so the task is really to delay it

But the obvious thing to have done was a couple of weeks ago tell everyone returning from northern Italy to self isolate. They didn't listen and now its shrug of shoulders oh well its here now.

Not to mention if they had made everyone returning to self isolate, that would have significantly delayed the peak.

I originally thought the government had a good grip on this, but after letting 100s 1000s? of potential cases just carry on as normal made me start doubting them, nothing they have done or said since has persuaded otherwise.

and yes I did watch the Chris whitty questions, and I really don't have the time and inclination now to rewatch it to pull it apart for you. But no I was not reassured by him in the slightest.

Sleepyblueocean · 12/03/2020 14:51

"We clearly have serious cases as you dont have 10 people go straight from mild to dead, so why are they not reported?"

Hospitals are now testing patients with symptoms such as chest infections who are in hospital already or have gone in with something else.

Lumene · 12/03/2020 14:52

Interesting @KinderWild

Lynamic · 12/03/2020 14:52

Was hoping maybe it really isn't so bad on children. Looking through twitter so far:

Just got an email from Ticketmaster saying that a gig (The Who) we were going to in 2 weeks in Cardiff has been postponed, as has the tour.
Kind of expected it.
Pissed off at losing the train and hotel costs tho.
Oh well.

Lumene · 12/03/2020 14:55

He has no science or medical expertise but he's very bright

Yes he’s bright enough but not a terribly deep thinker. Ex-journalist so good at grasping things quickly and interrogating stuff. How this translates to science-based stuff and population-level decision making who knows... I guess we’ll all find out.

Lumene · 12/03/2020 14:56

Grasping things quickly at a reasonably high level I should have said there.

nancypineapple · 12/03/2020 14:56

Hospitals have now been told to test those that are ill enough for hospital admission only and not just those who have travelled. Hence why my dd was sent away with half a bottle of antibiotics. I actually think we should not waste time and money now on testing because there isn't enough tests for all presenting with symptoms but focus attentions and money on treatment and opening up more ICU beds.

mylovelypinkchair · 12/03/2020 14:57

@thesunwillout you can normally get a refund on train tickets, worth a shot.

abitoflight · 12/03/2020 14:57

Just walking out of meeting now....

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 12/03/2020 14:57

Nancy how is she doing?

Thetigeronthewobbelboard · 12/03/2020 14:58

I wondered this but could it be because people are being diagnosed post-death.

WouldShouldCould · 12/03/2020 14:58

Children under 10 seem to be OK but what about 10+?

Also how exactly are they planning on flattening the curve?

Oakmaiden · 12/03/2020 14:58

Someone upthread said people would riot if there was no action....

I suddenly am thinking about a protest/riot where everyone is very careful to keep 2 metres away from everywhere and applies gel after smashing a window....

Bessica1970 · 12/03/2020 14:59

Have BBC not updated their numbers yet? Can’t see anything on there (other than the 10 deaths) sky updated half an hour ago!

IrisAtwood · 12/03/2020 14:59

I was at a major London hospital yesterday and was told by my consultant that they have cancelled everything but emergency and immediately life threatening surgery.
I was told that I would have had my surgery within two weeks because it is urgent, but must now wait until this crisis is under control - unless I become an emergency case - which could happen.
We also walked down corridors with rows of made up beds lining one side. Everywhere we went all we could hear was staff talking about the crisis and I have never seen so much cleaning and hand washing going on.

Article just released in the Guardian saying most Covid infections seem to have been spread by people who aren't yet showing symptoms, which makes isolation once symptomatic a lot less effective than we'd hoped.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 15:02

@oakmaiden
Just had the exact same conversation with my husband 😂
Who's going to want to protest or riot??
