@Horehound The herd immunity we appear to be aiming towards. The statistics of those who are likely to recover from this virus correlate to age (as well as other factors)

ShanghaiDiva · 12/03/2020 08:22

@Horehound
No, we don’t have to do what other countries are doing, but it would be wise to look at what has worked.
South Korea is effectively an island as the border with North Korea is closed, perhaps it would be sensible to consider what seems to be working there.

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 08:22

Is there a link somewhere that says how many people have been tested in each country and how many people have it?

I can obviously find the UK figures and there was a link a few days ago for Italy but I wondered if there was anything on the WHO website, all I could find was the numbers of ill/died/recovered for each country. I'm interested in the testing figures though, as so many people here seem to think we are not testing enough.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:22

Because we don't have to do what other countries are doing. We are our own island.

Science isn't sovereign oh how long have you been waiting to use that line @RedToothBrush?
I know that.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:22

@ShanghaiDiva yep I agree. And maybe they are...

GalOopNorth · 12/03/2020 08:24

Wow Horehound

You have an immense amount of trust in the government.

Which sadly for so many in this country is completely misplaced.

LemonSucker · 12/03/2020 08:25

Well Boris not impressed with your hand washing campaign. I have woken up to a sore throat, cough and I feel hot. I wash my hands ALL THE TIME, I do not touch my face and I have hardly left the house lately, just to go shopping.

Got another cold sore too, 2nd one in 2 weeks. I am very run down though, I am not sleeping due to anxiety over this virus and having terrible nightmares.

I suppose after today i will have to self isolate for 7 days anyway. Confused

I’ve started a Christian Cv-19 thread over on the Philosophy/Religion board if anyone’s interested.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:26

@GalOopNorth I don't know if I do but at the moment, what else can you do? I think it's best to try and trust they think this is the right approach. Otherwise you end up like some of the other posters on here in a big anxiety mess getting annoyed with any action or advice given.

Iceland now has 90 confirmed Covid-19 cases, which in a county of only 364,000 people, could represent the highest percentage infection rate in the world, reader Louise Todd points out.

Reykjavik’s Grapevine has the latest:

Of these 90 individuals, four of them contracted it due to a so-called “third-degree infection”; contracting the virus from someone who contracted the virus from someone else, who brought the disease in from abroad.

35 of these infections can be directly traced back to northern Italy; 29 from Austria; four from Switzerland and one from an unnamed Asian country. The rest have been infected from individuals from this group, some of whom did not abide home quarantine orders.

Poor Iceland.

This will happen here - ppl are fuckwits, unless there is enforcement hone isolation will be ignored repeatedly. People cannot bear the thought of even minor discomfort or inconvenience for the greater good.
RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 08:27

Why do you think the science in the UK is different to the rest of the world?

Just wondering why you think UK science knows better than WHO science and all other international scientists?

Cherrypi · 12/03/2020 08:27

When do you think they'll close the libraries?

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:28

@RunningAwaywiththeCircus but we are part of the economy so how does that make sense?

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 08:28

They don't want, as you think, 50% of the population to die...that truly would be our economy fucked!

@horehound Please don't lie, I never said this. I said 500,000. That is based on the 1% mortality rate of 80% people getting it that the Government is talking about. So that is less than 1% of the population of the UK.

I am not stupid. I have not read that the Government are putting the economy first and blindly repeating it. I have come to that conclusion myself from watching their actions. You always look at what people are actually doing, not what they are saying. And the economy is being prioritised. The budget made that clear.

AuldAlliance · 12/03/2020 08:28

Slovakia has declared a state of emergency

WaterSheep · 12/03/2020 08:29

When do you think they'll close the libraries?

I doubt they will. As with schools, I think it's more likely they will be forced to close because of a lack of staff.

Freezingold · 12/03/2020 08:29

@cologne4711 worldometer

picklemewalnuts · 12/03/2020 08:29

@alloutoffucks, Four and others- that's why I was asking! Not spreading misinformation, asking people better at numbers than me, to put it into context.

As it happens, I'm not keen on the answer you've given. Grin

My biggest fear/concern is the impact of this situation on society as a whole, the economy, the poor, the already ill. That's not because I don't care about individuals, but the impact on individuals is going to be greater as a result of the impact on society.

It looks like a double whammy, though. Crap.

picklemewalnuts · 12/03/2020 08:30

@strawberryjam

See you there!

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:30

@RedToothBrush I don't think it's different but I think there will be different aspects which will be carefully dissected and discussed, different pros and cons...maybe they are still weighing them up.
Is every single other country infected by this virus doing 100% of what all the others are?
No, thought not.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 08:30

There’s nothing wrong with having an emotion over it. It’s a fairly serious event.

There’s a lot of people on R4 saying the same thing. So what if people say it on here.

SirChing · 12/03/2020 08:31

Maybe one of the problems is that while there are still idiots out there thinking this is no big deal, then the likelihood of people adhering to isolating themselves is less. Then you end up with a half arsed situation where quarantine isn't working as people aren't sticking to it, but enough of the population do stick to it to wreck the economy. Then you have the worst of both worlds.

People in this country seem to be quite belligerent and stubborn at times, and refuse to believe things are true unless they see them for themselves. I can't see people supporting the next stage of measures until people become more worried. And for that to happen, the numbers have to increase.

It's also interesting that Italy locked down and the numbers still seem to be increasing. I know we wouldn't know what the morbidity figures would look like without the lockdown, but I do wonder whether there are two possible approaches to this and we have simply chosen an alternative one. Not the wrong one necessarily, just a different one.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 08:32

Our economy may end up being in better shape than some because decisive action is being taken with that.
But we will have more people dying. That does appear to be seen as an acceptable price to pay.

And anyone who blindly trusts any Government is very naive.
With anyone, look at what they do, not what they say. People can say all kinds of things, but it is actions that matter. Words are cheap.
