For the last ten years or more we've been told how we will all be working far longer and have seen retirement ages increase to 67 with further future increases already agreed. A lot of people are still working well in to their 70's to make ends meet. Now we see how this age group is so much more vulnerable just looking at the statistics from this virus. It seems as though we are valuable to the economy on the one hand but then an acceptable sacrifice on the other.

Cheeseismylife · 12/03/2020 08:10

Yikes, go to bed and I've missed nearly a whole thread.
I can't believe that Hancock didn't actually announce any thing useful last night.
I really really hope they'll come up with something better and fast.

@Chocolateandgin24
No doubt the govt has advice from WHO. No country has managed to contain the virus without introducing social distancing measures and it is frustrating to see that cancelling large events would be an easy first step and this is not happening.

I love horse racing and have been watching Cheltenham this week, but I can’t believe it is going ahead normally.

It was cancelled for Foot & Mouth disease in 2001 to help the farming economy. But is going ahead now despite the threat to human lives.

It is terrible.

Youngatheart00 · 12/03/2020 08:11

Has anyone watched Trump’s address? Rasping through and struggling for breath at points...

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:11

@MarshaBradyo

Which leads me to ask why do you think our response is so out of step? Because we don't have to do what other countries are doing. We are our own island. I've not looked into the USA thingy yet so can't comment there but I don't see why it's just Europe he's banned. What about Iran and China?!

I normally go to a playgroup on Thursdays. I don't feel like I want to go now until this is over. Too many slobbery babies and toddlers licking everything and spreading snot everywhere and the toys are rarely washed. I just feel like it's not worth the risk.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 08:13

@horehound
Iranians can't travel to the US unless they are students.
They are on the original travel ban.

@mrshoho what do you mean "acceptable sacrifice"?
Can you show me where we have sent an elderly person to the slaughterhouse?
Im quite sure any elderly person who contracts the virus will be getting the best NHS care possible.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 08:14

Other countries are trying to contain the virus. We don't know yet if this will be successful or not. Our Government is not even trying.
The aim is for the virus to spread in the UK, those who will die from it tough. But the economy saved. So mortality rate anywhere from 50% to doubled in 2020. Because that is what it will mean. And that is using the conservative Government estimates of mortality rate than WHO's. If you take WHO's, mortality rate in UK will be much higher.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:14

@ofwarren ah yes I did wonder that just after I posted. Thanks.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 08:16

@Horehound No we don't have to do what other countries are doing or what WHO recommends. We can keep on prioritising the economy and pretending that telling everyone to wash their hands will mean that less people will die here than abroad. That is bollocks.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 08:16

We’re our own island isn’t cutting it as a reason. Islands are taking stronger steps than us.

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 08:16

Sadly I think deaths from domestic violence will rise if people are confined to their homes.

But I suppose the drunken post-football battering may not happen if they've not been to the match.

@alloutoffucks no. That is just absolute codswallop. Unless you can provide a source for that of course...

They know it was coming, they know it will get worse, they know most will be ok. Those who aren't they will receive treatment..
And obviously some will die, we know that too. But it doesn't mean their death = tough luck" ffs.

@Quartz2208
It’s not just about China having an autocracy.
China has several advantages in the way cities are set up- living in cities on compounds means it is straightforward to make sure non residents cannot enter: the security system is already there.
There are also cultural differences: action being taken for the good of all over the desires of the individual is more acceptable in China ime.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 08:17

Of course elderly people with the virus will not be getting the best care. The NHS already can't cope with seasonal flu. They will not be able to cope with this. We will have lots of medics off ill. We don't have enough staff already.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 08:19

@Horehound Okay maybe the tough luck bit is codswallop. Everything else is not. I am using the Government's own stats which are much more conservative than WHO's.

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 08:20

Because we don't have to do what other countries are doing. We are our own island.

Science isn't sovereign.

GalOopNorth · 12/03/2020 08:20

Horehound

Many elderly people who get this at or near the peak of infection will not be treated. Many of them will die.

This is because we do not have the resources in this country to deal with a situation where such a large number of people simultaneously. People will be triaged and the most likely to survive will be treated.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 08:20

@alloutoffucks you've heard the "they're just putting the economy first" and have though "yeh that's right obviously they don't care about us" which is, I'm my opinion, completely ridiculous considering we are the economy...
They will be timing it to reduce the amount of deaths.i don't know how we can be any more clear to you. It's been said numerous times. They cannot tell people to self isolate because historically they know people get more and start to socialise again. So they need to time it so that it makes the biggest difference.

They don't want, as you think, 50% of the population to die...that truly would be our economy fucked!

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 08:20

Because we don't have to do what other countries are doing. We are our own island.

Why is nationalism coming into this at all?
