I haven't gone crazy and just bought things we might need (a lady is in intensive care only a few mins away from our house)
3 packets of pasta
Pasta sauces
Beans /spaghetti
Tinned tuna
Noodles
Mug shots (desperate times )
Rice
Rice pudding
Soup
Long life milk
Anything else I could get ?
What have you bought ?

Yes, a bit. Single parent with no local support network.

Namelesswonder · 10/03/2020 19:11

I was at the free from aisle this morning buying 1 bag of gluten free pasta for my Coeliac child. A couple came over and said, that stuff looks like normal pasta, it’ll do and took 4 packets! They took 50% of the stock. I’m sure they just thought they were looking out for their family too. Selfish gits.

AnneJeanne · 10/03/2020 19:12

I stocked up about 3 weeks ago when we were first hearing about Wuhan and I happened to watch Contagion one night, My DH laughed at me.

Megan2018 · 10/03/2020 19:16

We are planning to donate any tinned stuff we don’t end up using to the food bank-so hopefully they will benefit.

I might buy in some baby food-we start weaning on Saturday but if we can’t source fresh food to cook with I might need a back up!

Finfintytint · 10/03/2020 19:17

Agree, Bellinisurge. I have spent very little on my stocks. I’m a natural prepper. Most of my store is home grown and preserved foodstuffs. I wouldn’t splash out on too much extra stuff. I grew up with a parent who was subjected to rationing and I will not see anything go to waste if I can help it.

Roselilly36 · 10/03/2020 19:20

I haven’t, but DH sneaked off to Morrison’s this morning, he was gone ages, only took one bag, our sons were saying he’s down there panic buying mum 😂 I said no he can’t be, he only took one bag with him, they said that won’t stop him he will buy more bags, they were right!! Amongst the amazing purchases he brought 3 cans of corned beef, we haven’t had a can of corned beef in the cupboard for years! I am thinking of making him eat the lot of it!! He was delighted to buy 9 rolls of Andrex too.

DragonMamma · 10/03/2020 19:21

I’ve just done one extra shop of the normal dried stuff we would use anyway. Rice, a few extra tins, cereals, kids snacks, butter, cheese, lager, wine (of course!), some extra potatoes and onions etc.

I’ve also stocked up on washing powder and my usual cleaning products.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on the wine situation. I would hate to run out Wink

Chocolatedaim · 10/03/2020 19:28

No I haven’t.
Feels a bit greedy and selfish. What about the people that need to use food banks? Or those that can’t afford to buy more than their usual weekly amount, and low and behold there is no pasta for them.

Wannabangbang · 10/03/2020 19:32

Yes only a few bits

2 packs of pasta
Tins of tuna
Supernoodles
Tins of meatballs
Tins of chicken curry
Bag of rice
Eggs
Flour
Caster sugar
Longlife milk
2 large bottles of water
Pack of loo roll
1 packet paracetamol
1 packet of Ibuprofen
1 bottle kids suspension
2 packs anti bac wipes
2 bottles handwash
Loaf of bread in freezer
Tinned potatoes

shinynewapple2020 · 10/03/2020 19:34

Yes I've bought a few extra tins and organised my (small) freezer so that we have food for two weeks in case of self isolation/lock down. I don't consider this to be stockpiling but common sense .

I have tinned curry, chilli and rice, fray bentos pies, tinned potatoes and peas, hot dogs, beans, spaghetti and pesto plus some mugshots for lunches and a bread mix. It's all stuff I'd take if we were going on a self catering holiday where there is limited cooking facilities so will be used at some point.

sprinklemagicinmyhair · 10/03/2020 19:34

No I haven't. I'm puzzled by your 'desperate times' comment about mugshots though. Surely that's not all the supermarket had left?

sprinklemagicinmyhair · 10/03/2020 19:35

Wait. I did buy 4 x 4 packs of baked beans last week. They were reduced to 63p in Tesco and I can't resist a bargain Grin

scarymary33 · 10/03/2020 19:43

@sprinklemagicinmyhair no I meant it as in if your hungry and fancy something really fast,a mug shot Is your answer.

Just in case of what though OP ?

I genuinely don’t get the stockpiling craze

Becky11 · 10/03/2020 19:45

Couldn't if I wanted to. Loo roll shelf in Tesco today

Has anyone here stocked up on extra food just incase?
Bumblesbumbles · 10/03/2020 19:45

I’m trying to cook double
Of everything and freezing, so if we are ill we will have enough cooked meals to
Tide us over. Have got extra pasta, tins of tomatoes, rice, milk and bread in but only enough for a couple of weeks

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 10/03/2020 19:48

Yes about 3 weeks ago I made sure we had all our usual foods in, extra bag of pasta and rice, 2 uht milks and a big pack of loo roll. Also topped up the freezer and made sure we had a spare washing up liquid, clothes wash, surface spray and hand soap.
Haven't got lots of multiples, just a spare or 2 of the things we normally use.

Frangipanini · 10/03/2020 19:49

I'm pretty sure all those Italians in Rome who were queuing down the street to do a shop in the middle of the last night wish they had done a bit of prepping.

I've been in lockdown before in typhoons and SARs and so, yes I've prepped. If we go in lockdown in a couple of weeks, I will only need to do a quick fresh dash and will not be part of the panic, leaving non preppers with a shorter queue.

SweetpeaOrMarigold · 10/03/2020 19:50

I also put a few bits in the food bank box in the supermarket, but I do that anyway

madcatladyforever · 10/03/2020 19:51

No, I have a months supply of the exante diet and will be forced to live on that.

Frangipanini · 10/03/2020 19:52

This is quite a good article about prepping.

This

SavageBeauty73 · 10/03/2020 19:52

Yes I have extra. But to be fair I started buying extra for a no deal Brexit.

My DD has an underlying health condition and I'm trying not to freak out 😷

I donate a few items to the food bank every shop.

Frangipanini · 10/03/2020 19:55

There are a few other things to consider. If we are on lockdown like Italy for a week and not ill, we are going to be bored sh!tless. We may not be able to go out an about and have to stay in. If we are not ill, what are we going to do?

Some DIY
Watch TV
Boardgames
Have a clear out
Books

The boredom could be excruciating.

PickAChew · 10/03/2020 20:02

Odd assumption that people with cupboards full of tins have tinned meals. I have tomatoes, pulses (and dried lentils), tuna and salmon and the odd shit there's another power cut tin of soup. Our last house had lots of power cuts and the village sometimes got cut off in the winter so I'm habitually a bit of a prepper.

And by buying few extra packs of DS1's sausages (his diet is shit - see autism comment above) I've probably not deprived anyone on a low income of a meal, as it's the premium outdoor bred or free range ones that he has.

I got everything i ordered from Sainsburys, this morning, though my usual loo roll was subbed with a pack in a weird peachy colour and there was no paracetamol available to order (I take it daily, at times, for chronic pain)

winterisstillcoming · 10/03/2020 20:04

I haven't bought any more as I have a well stocked cupboard, so worst case scenario we will be eating a mish mash of stuff that has been sat in there. I have been a little bit more savvy such as Freezing leftover bread and using up extra fresh stuff in dishes and freezing portions. The less I need to buy, the more stuff will stay in the shops for those who need it.

Worse case scenario, I have a good months supply of fat around my middle that I've been stockpiling for a few years.
