No, because we don't have much in the way of cashflow at the moment, and as nervous as I am, I know buying extra at the same time as everyone else is buying extra will be contributing to shortages.
If I buy two packets of cheap paracetamol, and 5 other people do the same, then that's 6more families who may not be able to afford paracetamol, or 6 more families who may not be able to access any at all. No one is currently ill in my household, so my reason for buying it would be to mitigate impending disaster. My right to peace of mind for future pain does not trump the right of someone who is in pain now.
Similarly, if I buy two bags of rice instead of one, I'll know that if we get sick next week my family will have enough rice to be bored shitless of the stuff, but that's a family in poverty who may go hungry now.
It's selfish.
The time for prepping has gone, and those who were able and have done so responsibly are to be commended (and I'm not one of them, I haven't had the spare money for the last few months). Everyone else now needs to spare a thought for the elderly who can only carry a few items home on the bus, for those with dietary requirements such as allergies that need access to certain food products, for those in poverty who scrape by shopping for a meal or two at a time, for those with health conditions who can only get to the supermarket occasionally.
I live rurally. I share two supermarkets with about 30 villages and 2 towns. We had no known cases in our area last week and still when I went shopping there were no frozen vegetables, no frozen meat, no pasta, no milk alternatives, no cooking oil and no budget loo roll left in one, and the other was out of porridge oats and frozen sausages among other things. The looks of the faces of some was heart breaking, like they had no idea what they were going to do.
And as for the people who have bought all the soap and sanitiser, well they obviously don't understand that everyone needs clean hands for them to be less likely to get it. And there are now people who are immunocompromised and rely on basic hygiene to stay safe from everything, not just coronavirus.
The "I'm alright, Jack" attitude displayed by humanity right now fucking stinks.
