I haven't gone crazy and just bought things we might need (a lady is in intensive care only a few mins away from our house)
3 packets of pasta
Pasta sauces
Beans /spaghetti
Tinned tuna
Noodles
Mug shots (desperate times )
Rice
Rice pudding
Soup
Long life milk
Anything else I could get ?
What have you bought ?

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 10/03/2020 16:24

No. I’m shopping tomorrow and will just be buying the usual.

YgritteSnow · 10/03/2020 16:28

A bit. Enough to cover two - three weeks.

Flour
Pasta
Potatoes
Cheese
Butter
Tuna
Pasta
Pasta sauce
Various tins
Super noodles
Long life and Oatly milk.
Part baked baguettes
Bread mix for bread machine.
Packet sauces for macaroni cheese
Long life milk

I worked on three meals a day for three weeks and will use as usual but replace as I use them. They're not sitting unused in the cupboard or anything.

Already had paracetamol and calpol and bought three boxes of lemsip as I find them very effective.

Tbh I think it's just common sense.

GooodMythicalMorning · 10/03/2020 16:34

I added a couple of bits but not much. dh works in a superstore so as long as he doesn't get ill we should be ok.

hookiwooki · 10/03/2020 16:35

No, because we don't have much in the way of cashflow at the moment, and as nervous as I am, I know buying extra at the same time as everyone else is buying extra will be contributing to shortages.

If I buy two packets of cheap paracetamol, and 5 other people do the same, then that's 6more families who may not be able to afford paracetamol, or 6 more families who may not be able to access any at all. No one is currently ill in my household, so my reason for buying it would be to mitigate impending disaster. My right to peace of mind for future pain does not trump the right of someone who is in pain now.

Similarly, if I buy two bags of rice instead of one, I'll know that if we get sick next week my family will have enough rice to be bored shitless of the stuff, but that's a family in poverty who may go hungry now.

It's selfish.

The time for prepping has gone, and those who were able and have done so responsibly are to be commended (and I'm not one of them, I haven't had the spare money for the last few months). Everyone else now needs to spare a thought for the elderly who can only carry a few items home on the bus, for those with dietary requirements such as allergies that need access to certain food products, for those in poverty who scrape by shopping for a meal or two at a time, for those with health conditions who can only get to the supermarket occasionally.

I live rurally. I share two supermarkets with about 30 villages and 2 towns. We had no known cases in our area last week and still when I went shopping there were no frozen vegetables, no frozen meat, no pasta, no milk alternatives, no cooking oil and no budget loo roll left in one, and the other was out of porridge oats and frozen sausages among other things. The looks of the faces of some was heart breaking, like they had no idea what they were going to do.

And as for the people who have bought all the soap and sanitiser, well they obviously don't understand that everyone needs clean hands for them to be less likely to get it. And there are now people who are immunocompromised and rely on basic hygiene to stay safe from everything, not just coronavirus.

The "I'm alright, Jack" attitude displayed by humanity right now fucking stinks.

AParallelUniverse · 10/03/2020 16:37

I didn't need to. I already prep and have been doing for a long time.

userxx · 10/03/2020 16:37

I will be buying two litres of gin this week rather than one - does that count?

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 10/03/2020 16:38

No, and I'm starting to feel slightly peeved when I can't get my usual everyday items because people are panic-buying (and 'just in case' stocking up is panic buying, don't kid yourself.)

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/03/2020 16:40

No more than usual. I do a massive shop when i get paid and that lasts.

DameXanaduBramble · 10/03/2020 16:44

No, not panicking, not prepping, just shopping normally.

Megan2018 · 10/03/2020 16:50

We usually have very empty cupboards and only 1-2 days of food in (not due to money, we just usually shop as we need). We have done a big shop and now have enough food for 2 weeks but only the amount of food other people would ordinarily keep in, no bulk buys etc. we live rurally and rely on Ocado so want to make sure we are self sufficient if needed.

PatchworkMonkey · 10/03/2020 16:52

No because I'm a single parent, low income and have to budget £50/60 a week for the food shop. Luckily our Aldi was fully stocked today.

I do have about 50 toilet rolls now since my parents decided to come over with an "emergency" batch Hmm...

scarymary33 · 10/03/2020 16:55

I forgot the loo rolls

OP posts:
Notsure26 · 10/03/2020 16:59

If! Except im screwed now! Because everyone is panic buying, when i went to do my weekly shop today all the shelves were empty! We wont be eating much this week now because theres nothing to buy

HavenDilemma · 10/03/2020 17:00

The problem is, a few panic buy which then causes low stocks of a few basics. This then means that those who had no intention of panic buying, feeling they must buy a few extras of those items, incase they become unavailable. Everyone needs loo roll, hence the nationwide (probably international) shortages.

Not everyone is panic buying in case of self isolation. Running out of loo roll and not being able to get any anywhere is a pretty daunting thought!! Especially as things like toilet wipes etc can't be flushed (I know most say they can be, but any plumber will tell you they really shouldn't be!) Next shortage will be wipes I expect!

inwood · 10/03/2020 17:01

Exactly @HavenDilemma

Sparklingbrook · 10/03/2020 17:04

Got a large bottle of Southern Comfort so I am all set.

I don't like most tinned stuff, and not a huge pasta fan, and I am not going to start eating Pot Noodles. The freezer is full but I don't know exactly what's in it.

I went to Waitrose this morning and there was loads of toilet paper.

AlternativePerspective · 10/03/2020 17:05

If all these people bulk buying toilet rolls had any empathy they would offer to give some to those who can’t get them because of their selfishness/hysteria. After all, if you’ve got money to spend on 100 toilet rolls then you’ve got money to help those less fortunate, no?

I didn’t eat pot noodle or canned meals before I sure as hell ain’t going to start eating them now.

Besides which tinned foods contain an awful lot of salt, and as someone who is fluid and salt restricted because of a serious heart condition too much salt could cause my fluids to go up and push me closer to having to go on the transplant list.

I already make my own things like soups and stock because of afore-mentioned need to restrict salt intake so I always have veg in.

As for UHT milk, as I don’t drink tea or coffee I don’t need any, and if DP wants tea he can learn to drink it without milk. he doesn’t live with me so my house, my rules. Grin.

I have no idea how anyone can afford to prep/panic buy or where they put all this extra food which they will probably end up throwing away anyway. What a colossal waste, but it seems thoughts for the environment have gone out the window.

AlternativePerspective · 10/03/2020 17:07

As an aside, when I did my weekly shop last week I needed to buy red wine for cooking and they didn’t have any 😂

coronaworry · 10/03/2020 17:07

Yes and medication

FelineUK · 10/03/2020 17:18

Keep your knickers on!!

YgritteSnow · 10/03/2020 17:27

We wont be eating much this week now because theres nothing to buy

I don't believe you. Which will make you angry no doubt but I don't believe you literally cannot buy any kind of food to eat this week.

AmIAWeed · 10/03/2020 17:27

I've always objected to the idea of panic buying, its also like Christmas where people buy masses for shops that are closed 1 day. However. This has really made me consider what would happen in the event of an emergency - we get sick, shops run out due to panic buying and seriously - I dont want to be in a supermarket when people are panic buying or worse looting.

I've bought 1 extra of the dry goods we have, and will continue to do slowly, and start reading the preppers boards more so if a situation arises in the future I am organised.

I feel sad my Nana is worrying about hand sanitizer and I have none to give her, I know soap and water will help, but that doesn't help with her peace of mind and that's far more valuable to me right now. That's the reason I wont panic buy lots, but will take this as a lesson for the future.

fodderbeet · 10/03/2020 17:32

The only thing missing from the 'big shop' that I did today was stevia. More loo roll there than normal (though to be fair I usually do an online shop) and a few signs restricting some cleaning products to 5 per customer. Quite disappointing really, was expecting fights and drama.

Onetickettomars · 10/03/2020 17:37

Yes, I’ve always got 1 month’s worth of food in my pantry/freezer and 2 weeks’ worth of bottled water. I think my cupboard of cleaning and laundry products would last 6 months.

I have lots of Amazon subscriptions that send supplies (like 48 toilet rolls or a case of tissue boxes or wet wipes) every couple of months.

Onetickettomars · 10/03/2020 17:40

I’m having to take toilet rolls to work for my colleagues who (for some reason) didn’t plan ahead. I ordered hand sanitizer on line at the end of January when the news started filtering out. I don’t know why they didn’t think ahead of the supply issues
