I haven't gone crazy and just bought things we might need (a lady is in intensive care only a few mins away from our house)
3 packets of pasta
Pasta sauces
Beans /spaghetti
Tinned tuna
Noodles
Mug shots (desperate times )
Rice
Rice pudding
Soup
Long life milk
Anything else I could get ?
What have you bought ?

Sort of, I always keep 2-3 weeks good on the shelves and I've got a fully stocked freezer from batch cooking and buying up bargains over the last few weeks. We'd run out of fresh fruit/veg before anything else.

Not worried though. What worries me is dh being exposed (he's a GP) and bringing the virus home, like he did with swine flu!!

carnivalisover · 10/03/2020 20:09

frangipanini : we could start exercise routines; try our hand at home brew/wine (old tins of prunes might work!); start tracing our family trees; learn to knit/sew/make a rag rug; dig out our kids old recorders/harmonicas & learn to play; dust off the karaoke machine....Smile

insideoutandback · 10/03/2020 20:09

Gin, I bought loads of Gin. Oh and tonic, sorted.

cantdothisnow1 · 10/03/2020 20:16

I haven't stockpiled as such I'm just not eating the batch cooked food in the freezer this week and am making fresh chilli etc and keeping the frozen stock full .

I have bought a bit extra pasta and rice and have an extra block of cheese in the fridge.

TBH it seems quite a sensible precaution to me. The shelves are full in our supermarkets. If I get ill I need to be able to feed my kids.

Bool · 10/03/2020 20:32

Have been slowly preparing for weeks. As soon as I heard about it in Wuhan. First some strong Coronavirus masks. Then hand gel and paracetamol. Then a pack of extra pasta a week and some frozen veg. Now some toothpaste and washing powder. Defrosted my freezer a couple of weeks ago and put some ready meals in that I can easily make if ill. I think when you feel out of control this kind of slow preparing makes you feel better. It also makes the kids feel like everything is under control

Bool · 10/03/2020 20:33

Oh I am a single mum too. So if I get ill I need to be prepared.

Level75 · 10/03/2020 20:39

What is wrong with you people. It's selfish and socially irresponsible. For just one example, see this article:

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/10/food-banks-run-out-of-milk-and-other-staples-as-shoppers-panic-buy-coronavirus?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_WhatsApp

Wildthyme · 10/03/2020 20:48

I bought 200 Mayfair cigs today. Hardly think that'll break the food bank.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 10/03/2020 20:50

I’ve had a sizeable back stock of everything for a year so I’ve only really topped up on a few items. We have no-one to shop for us and as we spend almost all our time together we’re quite likely to be ill together, so being as self sufficient as possible is sensible and responsible.

I’m not sure why tins are supposed to be unhealthy. Apart from baked beans (which do contain salt & sugar) I have tinned tomatoes, pulses, tuna and sweet corn, none of which contains salt.

Floooy174 · 10/03/2020 20:55

Erm.......no

scarymary33 · 10/03/2020 21:02

The only thing not available in my local stores is hand sanitizer.

frangipanini I bought some new maths and English workbooks for my school aged DC to help stave off boredom if we have to self isolate Wink

FlemCandango · 10/03/2020 21:29

As Ds is self isolated cos he just returned from Italy last night. I have stocked up as there is a strong possibility the rest of us may have to also isolate, if he starts exhibiting symptoms. So I am not going to apologise for making sure we can eat and drink for a couple of weeks

NellMangel · 10/03/2020 21:54

I've built up a supply of tins over time. I think it started with a shitty winter where I realised I wasnt prepared, then brexit and concerns over supply, and now coronavirus.

It's mostly due to my anxiety. I need to feel prepared. However it does seem practical. Let's say we have to lockdown. We are allowed to stores but have to stay 2 metres.apart. The queues will be horrendous. The shelves arent going to be well stocked. I've no intention of dragging my DC along to that. I doubt our online delivery services could handle everyone's orders too.

RhubarbBikini · 10/03/2020 22:18

I've been buying wallpaper paste and treated myself to a new (safe) step ladder. If I have to self isolate for a couple of weeks I'm going to finish decorating the house

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/03/2020 22:51

I've had most of mine since brexit . If i do end up ill I dont want to be dealing with supermarkets and there's no one else here to make sure my children have food

Toilet papers been a bit hit and miss the last few days but the supermarkets had plenty of food this morning

Beesisabuzzin · 10/03/2020 23:26

I had only just started using the Brexit stock so over the last few weeks have added some extra bits. Since living very rurally I have tended to always keep good food supplies. I'm a single parent too so there's no one else to rely on, especially as my ex is in a high risk group.

I've also got some new books and craft supplies in so we don't get bored (great excuse).

Cherrysherbet · 10/03/2020 23:34

I’m doing my weekly shop tomorrow. I’ll buy a few extra tins, but that’s it. Not too much, as it’s selfish to stockpile.
We have to make sure everyone in our community is looked after during these difficult times. Stockpiling will only cause shortages, and make people panic. We need to try to keep the chain flowing.
Be sensible please people.

Devlesko · 10/03/2020 23:37

Yes, but over months/ years.
Just an extra item in weekly shop. Tbh, it was in case I ever got flu/pneumonia etc as susceptible. Even with heavy cold and bugs it's nice not to have to go out for a while.
So we are ok for a bit.

Butterwhy · 10/03/2020 23:37

Adding a few tins over time is fine, people buying 300 at a time is what collapses the supply chain. I always have dried and long life food in, I've been bitten before by being poorly and unable to leave the house and nothing to feed DC. I haven't had to buy anything in particular since this began though, so have just been buying fresh stuff which doesn't seem to be affected as much. I keep a note of dates though, as some tinned goods and UHT milk the dates swing around pretty quickly. I donated a box to the food bank earlier in the week and some loo rolls as I bet their donations are more scarce at the moment.

LuluJakey1 · 10/03/2020 23:46

I still had my Brexit stuff- we would use that.

I have bought an extra pack of loo rolls, a box of tissues, extra cat litter and cat food.

APurpleSquirrel · 10/03/2020 23:48

I picked up a few bits extra today - stuffed we'd eat normally eat, meat for the freezer, frozen veg, Nutella, tinned tomatoes, nappies etc.
Sainsbury's had no loo roll or paracetamol still; Aldi had both but no flour. Also baked beans & Tuna were low in both.

bd67thSaysReinstateLangCleg · 11/03/2020 00:12

What is wrong with you people. It's selfish and socially irresponsible.

Any of us could be told to self-isolate at any time. Keeping two weeks of supplies in the house at all time means we are prepared for self-isolation.

Frangipanini · 11/03/2020 06:52

What is wrong with you people. It's selfish and socially irresponsible.

I am not going to stop preparing for a 2-week lock down. I have my own young family to think of. I think you are really unreasonable to make us feel guilty about this.

What I will do though is make sure I contribute to the FB with items they need. By the way, what do they need? They don't seem to be making any noise about shortages. It's time to speak up if they need things.

ValleyoftheHorses · 11/03/2020 06:57

Prepped for Brexit and have plenty for this. Have prepped for us all having a 2 week flu like illness in terms of OTC medicine also.
