I haven't gone crazy and just bought things we might need (a lady is in intensive care only a few mins away from our house)
3 packets of pasta
Pasta sauces
Beans /spaghetti
Tinned tuna
Noodles
Mug shots (desperate times )
Rice
Rice pudding
Soup
Long life milk
Anything else I could get ?
What have you bought ?

No, until I'm at imminent risk of quarantine then there's no point.

How do you know whether you're at "imminent risk of quarantine"? It's a virus, it doesn't give advanced warning.

relying on someone else is not the brightest idea

Exactly! Every prepper, from "doomsday bunker" to "a few extra tins and a decent first aid kit", preps because they realise that in a crisis the only person you can rely on is yourself.

Thanks for the tip Scary
Went on after you posted and it was in stock but then it went out of stock after I put it in my basket.
Annoying!

slartibarti · 11/03/2020 13:38

The only thing I've stockpiled is gluten free flour. Celiac in the family and Ocado had run out so had to order from a health food online shop. Couldn't buy less than 15 x 1kg bags.

TankGirl97 · 11/03/2020 13:48

I always have full cupboards and some extras in over winter (we've been snowed in before) so I've shopped as normal really. I admit I've bought a few extra packs of biscuits and extra frozen fruit because two weeks is a long time without treats and healthy food!
There doesn't seem to be crazy panic buying here anyway, Lidl was fully stocked this morning, loo roll and everything.
We are healthy and low risk so I figure we don't want to take up shopping delivery slots if they are in short supply. We're perfectly able to look out for ourselves for a couple weeks.

Egghead68 · 11/03/2020 13:49

I bought toothpaste, Bin bags, lots of oatcakes and tinned beans but also some sweets, cakes and ice-cream because I know I will crave something sweet.
I predict I will eat all the sweet stuff in the first three days!

Brown76 · 11/03/2020 14:33

I have about an extra 2 weeks of food and toiletries I've built up gradually and made sure we have tissues, paracetamol, soap etc but not 50 loo rolls and 1000 kg of pasta.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 11/03/2020 14:41

Brown 76, same here

I’m currently in at home quarantine after developing a fever and cough 5 days after a flight (not Uk based) and am waiting for my test results today. Know what you do want to stock up on? Suduko/puzzles etc because it’s BORING AS SHIT!!!

CanICelebrate · 11/03/2020 18:08

I’ve been buying extra every week for a few weeks now and am well stocked up. I don’t think it’s selfish to have bought extra as I have quite a big family to feed and I haven’t bought excessive amounts of anything in one go.

Chocolatedaim · 12/03/2020 09:31

Oh peyton hope you are ok 👍🏻

thefemalelemur · 12/03/2020 09:44

Not excessively, I've got a pretty well stocked cupboard and freezer anyway that would last us a couple of weeks but I've added a few extra tins, cereals, sugar and teabags. I've also made sure I have plenty of things like garlic and ginger paste, spices etc so I can make decent meals out of my store cupboard.

mrsawhite · 12/03/2020 10:21

I'm starting to think we need to get a few more stores in. Can you freeze butter and cheese? I did get some extra tins of soup and some extra bleach (couldn't find any wipes or spray!) thinking to get some extra cereal. Hand wash if I can find it, and want to stock up on dog food in case we can't go out. Reading posts on here. What would be useful. Have the usual chopped tomatoes, tins of pulses. How much to plan for. 2 weeks?

KatherineJaneway · 12/03/2020 10:23

I mostly have lots of food in but I am buying enough milk and bread for two weeks if I need it and ensuring I could eat well if I have to self isolate.

ACautionaryTale · 12/03/2020 10:28

My freezer is always stocked with meat that could last 3-4 weeks and I have a vast store cupboard of herbs/spices/oils

What I don't normally have are veggies as I shop as needed for Fresh

All I've done is gone out and bought some fresh veg that I know will keep a while nd a few bags of frozen. and made sure we have milk in (we normally have 3-4 bottles of four Pinter craven dale in anyway as we drink a lot of lattes). We have five large bags of coffee beans so we are ok for coffee.

Thats it.

Oh, and no loo rolls as we had two large costco ones from our last visit anyway - and if all else fails there is a shower.

Hobbesmanc · 12/03/2020 10:39

I work in Healthcare and our organisation has already required four colleagues to self isolate- none in my region.

Therefore it would be foolish of me not to have some extras stockplied- enough for a few weeks - as I am more likely to be exposed or asked to self isolate. I've got nice stuff though - I'm not spending two weeks eating chick peas and wiping my bum.

The virtuous posters who refuse to plan are the ones who will be taking up vital delivery slots if they have to self isolate without warning. Good luck with that if lots of drivers aren't working. Its common sense for those who can to prepare.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/03/2020 10:49

I really, really don't want to but yesterday I bought powdered milk (one package) just in case. I also bought cans of beans (I'm vegetarian) and a packet of pasta (the spaghetti I usually use, the only one on the shelf to the amusement of the shop assistant who had just put it there). I usually have a stocked larder simply because my Mum used to and I learned to do so. I'm going to keep it rather more stocked not because I fear Corvid 19 but because I fear all the idiots who are buying three years supply of fucking loo paper, pasta, rice and flour.

Findumdum1 · 12/03/2020 10:59

I’ve been buying extra every week for a few weeks now and am well stocked up. I don’t think it’s selfish to have bought extra as I have quite a big family to feed and I haven’t bought excessive amounts of anything in one go.

This is exactly my approach. If schools close and DH has to wfh I will have 5 extra people at home during the day wanting lunch, snacks, bored-snacking, wiping their bums and washing their hands when it is normally just me from 8-6. Have basically just done 2 monthly shops this month and got an extra pack of things here and there when at the shops for normal top ups.

That isn't panic-buying or being selfish that's being prepared and thinking ahead. Everything I have bought either won't spoil or is in the freezer so will all get used. I bought some hand sanitizer for everyone weeks ago as it was obvious when it was all kicking off in China that it would come to Europe straight after. I always have a spare bottle of infant paracetamol and ibuprofen in for the kids - I buy one as soon as the last one is down to the last few doses and have been doing this for 10 plus years. Same with hand wipes and paracetamol etc for the adults.

I am getting really sick of the people moaning on facebook and on here about not being able to buy one of the items that have, obviously, had increased demand on them over the last couple of weeks like soap, toilet roll, pasta etc. It was effing obvious that was going to happen! They should have been more organised and stepped up their shopping or orders or carers shops a little bit, like most people did, instead of spending 2 weeks on facebook going "oh ffs what's the issue? It's just a bad flu/only flu/no worse than flu/flu kills more etc etc"

ThanksForAllTheFish · 12/03/2020 10:59

I always have enough food in to get by for about a month should we need to. Plenty of tins, packets, jars, rice, pasta etc.

Extras I have bought have been yeast sachets and extra flour so I can make my own bread should I need to. I’ve also bought I some long life milk. DD needs the Lactose free stuff so have 4 of them in and 4 of our regular milk. I also have a couple of oat milks in as I quite like my coffee made with oat milk.

I’m going to get some extra cat food in today and maybe some extra snack type food like crisps and popcorn.
