Now the whole country is designated as a place that requires self isolation if you visit and later feel unwell with symptoms that may be the Covid 19.
How likely is it that the advice will change to Do Not Go.

The news in Italy is grim. Anybody willingly going there now should not be allowed back until it is all over.

I agree. Very selfish otherwise as you're likely to bring the virus back and potentially infect people more vulnerable than yourself.

bbcessex · 08/03/2020 15:16

@Namechangexyz1 - I expect he will be required to self-isolate for at least two weeks on his return.

What's his trip for?

I can't imagine anyone going for anything but essential reasons now.. (along the lines of very sick parent).

Namechangexyz1 · 08/03/2020 15:28

Skiing Hmm

You do realise not all people there chose to go.

My kids were there with their dad. I didnt want them to go. Trying to get legal restriction on them going, when it was fine when they left, just wouldnt have happened.

Their dad booked it. Are you seriously suggesting my kids should have been made to stay there indefinitely?

Grufallosfriends · 08/03/2020 15:34

You do realise not all people there chose to go. My kids were there with their dad.

So their dad didn't choose to go there with them? Were they somehow forced to go Shock?

Thunderpunt · 08/03/2020 15:45

All ski lifts have been shut in the affected regions so no point in going skiing currently.

Thunderpunt · 08/03/2020 15:47

From the council of Valfurva (Sondrio) where my sister in law is stranded (like many workers, she goes to work in the mountains during the Wii yet and back down to Tuscany or other summer resorts where she lives and works in the summer)

CORONAVIRUS COMMUNICATIONS

We inform the population that in the night the decree of the Presidency of the council of Ministers has been signed that introduces new provisions regarding our municipality and the entire Lombardy region.

It is recommended that the entire population follow the containment measures provided by the Ministry of Health. Have a nice day!!!

Reginabambina · 08/03/2020 15:48

@Grufallosfriends well the dad chose, but not the kids presumably.

Thunderpunt · 08/03/2020 15:48

Obviously a few google translate issues but you get the gist

salty78 · 08/03/2020 15:57

@collywobble I'm in the same boat, DC flying to Milan on 4th. I just can't see how it can go ahead but all school have said is that it depends on FCO advice.

Kawahara · 08/03/2020 16:02

So their dad didn't choose to go there with them? Were they somehow forced to go?

Yes their dad booked it.

They didnt choose it anymore than any kids chooses the family holiday.

When they left there regions fine. Advice was travel was ok.

But it the kids didnt choose to go. How do 2 young kids choose to go to understand the risks.

They are children.

Which small children do you know that go 'no mum I am not going to Spain this summer' and their parents say 'ok dear'

Do you say all children are forced to go on holiday, because their parents book it?

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 08/03/2020 16:09

Why should international travel be completely banned?

Let’s say I fly from London to Sicily for a holiday. There are similar levels of cases. It’s in the community already for both cases. I’d be in public in both places (in London I’m sandwiched like sardines during my daily commute). What’s the additional risk to the uk if I fly to Sicily and back?

MarshaBradyo · 08/03/2020 16:21

Kawahara will they self isolate when they return?

Butterwhy · 08/03/2020 16:23

No, I wouldn't.

Kawahara · 08/03/2020 16:41

MarshaBradyo they are back. At the moment they are.

The restrictions say that only people displaying symptoms, which have been where they are should self isolate.

Exh and are concerned there will be a situation like with the north. As in, the middle of the week they will declare everyone whoa has been there regardless of symptoms, should isolate

They arent going in to school tomorrow. We will speak to the school first and try and decide together.

I also need to speak to work as I am looking at potentially 4 weeks without seeing them.

So for now, they have gone to their dads.

Interestingly, naples airport did not check their temperatures on the way out. But did in the way in. Which i find odd. Seems they dont care what people might have if they are leaving.

MarshaBradyo · 08/03/2020 16:44

Kawahara that’s true re not caring about people leaving! Puts the onus on us to do the same on entry.

Four weeks is hard, hope all goes well.

Astillbe · 08/03/2020 16:47

We're booked to go to Rome in a couple of weeks and are planing on going unless the FCO advice changes.

Work are aware where I'm travelling to and have said it's fine but obviously not to return to work if I show any symptoms.

If the holiday hadn't already been booked and paid for we wouldn't go but have decided we'd rather take a chance than lose the money.

There seems to be a lot of overreacting on here.

Cameron2012 · 08/03/2020 17:04

We were due to go to Rome in May but are playing insurance roulette until the full amount has to be paid in ten days, then we will cancel.
I’m not concerned about catching it but I would be mortified if I thought I had bought it back and given it to someone and tbh the way it is going we could end up having to stay in Italy for weeks to isolate which wouldn’t be covered by our insurance and we couldn’t afford to do.
I am gutted but the lives of my friends and family are more important.
Overall the affect on the Italian economy will be devastating and I really feel sorry for anyone who relays on tourism.
We love Italy and will be returning as soon as we can.

Wigeon · 08/03/2020 19:45

@DrMadelineMaxwell - FCO advice has just changed (even since this morning) to advise against all but essential travel to all of Lombardy and the other areas in N Italy:

“ The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the following areas in northern Italy, due to an ongoing outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) and various control and isolation measures imposed by the Italian authorities on 8 March: Lombardy region (which includes the cities of Milan, Bergamo, Como) and the provinces of Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Rimini (all in Emilia Romagna); Pesaro e Urbino (in Marche); Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli (all in Piemonte); Padova. Treviso and Venice (in Veneto).”

Kawahara · 08/03/2020 19:49

Work are aware where I'm travelling to and have said it's fine but obviously not to return to work if I show any symptoms.

And this is the issue.

Things can change before you go or while you are there.

When my kids got to italy, all was well.

Unfortunately, not everyone gets paid to have 2 weeks off. So going to a country that is increasing the places its telling you not go, is worrying for a lot of people.

They may come back or be stuck there because it's become an area that means you must isolate. Symptoms or not.

I am not worried about corona itself. But all the other consquences, like time off work, looking after the kids etc.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/03/2020 21:21

@Wigeon Thanks. We are going to Sorrento, to the South which is not a lockdown area yet. I am keeping an eye on that advisory page though.

OP posts:
Smithtylater · 08/03/2020 21:23

No way...

Cocoaone · 08/03/2020 21:23

Apparently (according to the Guardian) 'thousands' of people from North Italy flocked to the south last night in order to avoid the lock down and to be with family.

So I give it a couple of weeks before we start seeing significant rises in cases in South Italy too..

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/03/2020 21:32

Oh dear.

OP posts:
KoalasandRabbit · 08/03/2020 21:38

Yes the lockdown was leaked to the press yesterday Hmm so would imagine quite a few got out and obvious place to go is with family / friends in Italy. DD is supposed to be on school trip to Sorrento in June. School are adamant it's going ahead and were Hmm when I asked them about it like what are you worrying about. 16 million under quarantine may have got their notice but bet it's still going ahead.
