Now the whole country is designated as a place that requires self isolation if you visit and later feel unwell with symptoms that may be the Covid 19.
How likely is it that the advice will change to Do Not Go.

I know it’s annoying. My parents are doing a trip of a lifetime and right in the middle of a pandemic 🙈 poor timing.

Dh cancelled an Italian hotel and got it back but must have been the t&c from the hotel, they could cancel up to two weeks beforehand without penalty.

tallah · 10/03/2020 13:11

@Bottleofcorona I totally agree. Everywhere is as dangerous as everywhere else at the min so may as well go where you want

Astillbe · 10/03/2020 13:13

Can people who are having to cancel trips to Italy not claim the money back through their insurance? I rang ours and they have said that as the FCO has now advised against travel we can put a claim in. We just need written confirmation from the hotel that they will not refund us. I assume the airline will refund us for the flights but if not will claim for that too.

undead · 10/03/2020 13:16

Just read elsewhere that Ryanair has cancelled flights to Italy. If that's true I am devastated.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 13:17

Can’t you get it back through insurance Undead?

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 13:25

No

Seventyone72seventy3 · 10/03/2020 13:55

@undead - You're just winding people up now aren't you? If they've cancelled you should get your money back.

Astillbe · 10/03/2020 13:57

All the airlines have cancelled the flights, Jet2 up to around July. You should get a refund or option to rebook and if you have insurance claim through that for the hotel (if they won't refund).

SmellyBeard · 10/03/2020 15:17

I thought ryan air has cancelled flights up to 3rd April?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/03/2020 15:19

Ryanair have cancelled all flights up to midnight on April 8th.

SmellyBeard · 10/03/2020 15:25

Oh really. Thanks for correcting me.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 10/03/2020 15:51

Could have claimed it back...p but didn’t get insurance. It’s usually something DH does a week before we go 😐

Wigeon · 10/03/2020 16:40

So we’re due to travel to Italy later in April, after the current Italian govt restrictions end on 3 April, but my travel insurance company can’t tell me over the phone if we’d be covered if we cancel now, given the FCO advice against all but essential travel to the whole of Italy - we’d have to cancel, then claim, then find out if they’d cover it.

Anyone know whether insurers pay out for trips later in April, given the FCO advice isn’t time-limited to 3 April even if the Italian government restrictions are?

KoalasandRabbit · 10/03/2020 16:52

Mine will only accepts claims from 48 hours before if FCO advice still in place, another one was 30 days before. I am supposed to try and get money refunded first from everywhere then insurer pays what can't get back. I would read your insurance terms and conditions and approach hotels / airlines etc for refunds but maybe submit claim closer to date though check with insurer.

KoalasandRabbit · 10/03/2020 16:54

Hotels do sometimes refund non-refundable or allow date changes so always worth a try.

Wigeon · 10/03/2020 18:11

@KoalasandRabbit - not sure what you mean re 48 hours /30 days before? Do you mean that you have to submit your insurance claim within 48 hours or 30 days (depending on your insurer) of cancelling your holiday?

KoalasandRabbit · 10/03/2020 18:13

Yes my insurer won't accept cancellation claims due to FCO advice until 48 hours before holiday and another one won't accept them until 30 days in advance. 48 hours seems crazily close but it's their rule.

KoalasandRabbit · 10/03/2020 18:16

This is my insurer's rules:

Wigeon · 10/03/2020 18:21

Oh right, got it. I’ve called them twice in the last week to check various things and they didn’t mention a deadline like that, and I don’t recall seeing anything when I checked my policy document. I’ll double check.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 10/03/2020 23:05

I'm waiting to hear from tui. We aren't due togl go til the 6th of april and the lockdown is officially until.the 3rd as far as italy says so far.
I hope they aren't going to keep us waiting until then to see if they can say we should still go rather than refunding.
I'd rather not risk it even if things peaked and dropped and were opened again straight after the 3rd (unlikely!).

Of interest to train travellers: I have just received a refund from SNCF for my trip Geneva - Paris, part of my planned trip home from Italy mid April. I booked through Raileurope and am still waiting for news of a refund from Trenitalia for the rest of the trip, I sent the request on March 1st. I'd be happy with vouchers so we can return in the future. Just Eurostar left now!

Toybox88 · 11/03/2020 06:42

My airline have suspended flights til 3 April. I'm due to fly on 4th. Airline have told me I will not be getting refunded.

MsTSwift · 11/03/2020 06:48

Dd April school trip cancelled 😥 France but Italian border

Seventyone72seventy3 · 11/03/2020 07:32

@NainAGP I am waiting for my refund from Trenitalia too. Hopefully they will get to it eventually.

TheresGonnaBeARain · 11/03/2020 07:38

It’s not going to stay confined to north Italy - it will end up here too. Apparently a large proportion of people don’t present with any symptoms, which is partly what has enabled it to spread to effectively.
