Italy in April. Would you?

Now the whole country is designated as a place that requires self isolation if you visit and later feel unwell with symptoms that may be the Covid 19.
How likely is it that the advice will change to Do Not Go.

Unless FCO advice changes you won’t get refunds I might well go. But I’m frontline nhs and expect to catch it early on

undead · 06/03/2020 12:25

We are planning to go to Rome for Easter. At the moment we are still going.

ritzbiscuits · 06/03/2020 14:43

We're booked to go to Northern Italy during May Half Term, so playing wait and see. Our cancellation terms allow us to cancel 6 weeks before and get 70% of our accommodation cost back, so we may well be doing this. Flight money will be written off etc.

Are you fully paid up to go or can you salvage any costs? Personally, I don't think I'd be going in April, feels very close and cases are still ramping up at present.

Also, personally, I feel like its unlikely the government will restrict access to and from Italy. Although we've left the EU, we haven't fully and are in transition. I therefore can't see the UK cutting off part of a major EU territory, though I may be wrong.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/03/2020 14:46

No. I wouldn't travel anywhere. Imagine being stuck in quarantine in a foreign country.

I can think of worse places!

ByeMF · 06/03/2020 14:50

No I wouldn't go.

Roselilly36 · 06/03/2020 15:03

No way

CottonSock · 06/03/2020 15:05

No. Go somewhere else. Maybe choose near the time of travel

user1480880826 · 06/03/2020 15:15

I’m as likely to go to Italy as I am Wuhan.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/03/2020 15:36

Its booked, paid for and in the South.

@BentNeckLady just out of interest where did you see that 20% don’t get symptoms?

And OP no, I wouldn’t.

SaucySuester · 06/03/2020 16:17

Nope, under no circumstances

CormoranStrike · 06/03/2020 16:50

My company is advising us not to go, and if we choose to that we need to self isolate for 14 days in return.

Blazedout · 06/03/2020 16:58

I have a flight booked to naples on Mar 14 for a week. I'm currently watching and waiting for travel advice and flight cancellations to at least recoup some money.

Poofurburrball · 06/03/2020 17:52

We're going to Pisa and Tuscany in early April, still planning to go unless told not to. I think it's a common sense approach. There's quite a bit of overreaction here!

I have family in Pisa and they say it's basically business as usual, there're about the same number of cases there as there are in my home county (W Sussex) and Surrey. I work in a college of 2000 students - opporuntiy for infection in the UK is pretty high!

roarfeckingroar · 06/03/2020 17:53

I'm going at the end of March and until the government advises against / bans travel I will not change plans

middleager · 06/03/2020 18:13

Absolutely not.
My son was on a school ski trip the day some cities were put on lockdown and I was worried he might be stuck there.

It's not just about picking it up though, it's about being quarantined far from home in another country.

Dacaday · 06/03/2020 18:24

Where you're planning on going doesn't really matter, you'll be travelling in a plane breathing recycled air with people who could have just been to a high risk area. The only way to have halted the spread of the virus would have been a complete ban on unnecessary travel which would never happen as obviously capitalism rules, but honestly I think anyone travelling for pleasure at the moment is stupid, this is exactly why we are heading towards a pandemic here in the UK.

SoftSheen · 06/03/2020 18:25

Nope.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 06/03/2020 18:30

We can’t go at Easter (south italy ) , its very sad as it’s a custody visit . But flight is through Milan Sad

Also my kids have a variety of childcare , and I don’t Think it’s fair on their CM , and school
Friends

I might get direct flights nearer the time , but also where they visit is super remote so they might even have to quarantine there

Damm , didn’t predict this when me and Ex split up

Cinammoncake · 06/03/2020 18:32

No

Kawahara · 06/03/2020 18:33

paid for and in the South.

My kids are in the south. Theres 45 cases where they are, as of this morning.

NHS direct advice has been that it's best to isolate them when they get back. Which means them isolating with exh. Its only expected to get worse in italy.

I absolutely would not go.

bbcessex · 06/03/2020 18:38

We are due to go to Venice in 3 weeks. Flights & hotels on a non-refundable basis. We are definitely not going, as we a: don't want to visit in these circumstances, b: have a child with health conditions, and c: my work has stated any travel to Italy (amongst other places) needs pre-approval.

It's annoying that the FCO are so specific in their 'no-go' advice, as until they specifically say Venice or the whole of Italy / Northern Italy, we can't claim on insurance.

MadameJosephine · 06/03/2020 18:39

I’m booked to go to Venice with DD at half term. We’re definitely not going as we’d have to self isolate for 2 weeks on return. DD’s school ski team just returned from northern Italy and were told not to attend school for 2 weeks and I’m front line NHS staff so would definitely not be allowed in work for 3 weeks and I’m not sure where I’d stand pay wise if I went knowing that I’d have to take 2 weeks off on return.

Luckily I’ve only paid a deposit for accommodation and balance isn’t due until 8 weeks before so it would only be the flights I’d lose out on so I’m hanging on for now and not cancelling and hoping FCO advice will change and we’ll get a refund on insurance for the flights, I read today that KLM are prepared to issue vouchers to be used within the next 12 months if you cancel by 31 March for trips up to 31 May so that might be option for us too but at then end of the day worst case is I’ve lost £400 and I’m prepared to take the hit to keep safe

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/03/2020 18:57

How can your place of work require you to get pre approval for where you wish to travel? Surely that's beyond their remit.

We are leaving the UK to move to Crete full time on 27th May and driving over will be staying one night in Italy 29th May to catch ferry from Venice on the 30th May. We have rented our house out in the UK and people are moving in on the 29th May. It's a huge dilemma.....I really don't know what to do
