Dp voluntarily going to north italy! AIBU

Dp is booking a trip to north italy to watch a few sporting fixtures. Regularly has sporting holidays with his mates.
It is only a long weekend, but will be flying into and staying in the areas that have been affected by coronavirus.
He is booking it this weekend and going next weekend. Although advice is not to go to these areas of italy he said he isnt bothered and wont catch anything anyway.

AIBU to persuade him not to go? I know its his trip, im not going and nothing to do with me but think its a stupid move to still book and go!!
Said when he comes back he will not self isolate and will carry on as normal. Am i over reacting, is it not as bad as the media make out? He cant see my problem!

I mean if he's actually going to one of the places on the list then he's an idiot, but if he's just going elsewhere in northern Italy, then why would he self-isolate when that's not medical advice? Only if you develop flu symptoms are you required to self-isolate if you've travelled north of Pisa but not to an affected town.

If he comes back with flu symptoms and then doesn't isolate then he's a fool, but otherwise he's just following medical advice. Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall just came back from a skiing trip to north Italy and aren't self-isolating because they are following guidelines and are not symptomatic.

Worriedforhealth · 28/02/2020 11:13

Yes, we have already had words previously about his lax hand washing (barely washes hands with soap, usually just gives them a swipe under running tap) and thats when ive nagged!!
I will be staying at my family house until it is safe to return. Although i highly doubt he will be cleaning and anti bacing the house while im away!

I agree. I think I'm missing something here.

onalongsabbatical · 28/02/2020 11:36

@Worriedforhealth is he going to one of these places?

The FCO advise against all but essential travel to 10 small towns in Lombardy (Codogno, Castiglione d’Adda, Casalpusterlengo, Fombio, Maleo, Somaglia, Bertonico, Terranova dei Passerini, Castelgerundo and San Fiorano) and one in Veneto (Vo’ Euganeo), which have been isolated by the Italian authorities due to an ongoing outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Lots of people have asked you this. These are the places he MUST self isolate from, otherwise only if he has symptoms.

Oldfail · 28/02/2020 11:38

If it's 6 nations they are postponing the matches

AndyMurraysCat · 28/02/2020 11:40

I’m going to Turin tomorrow coz I’m going skiing on the French/Italian border & will only not go if the Foreign Office advises against travel there.

SVRT19674 · 28/02/2020 11:42

When Valencia played Milan last week, three of their supporters came back home from Italy with Coronavirus. So YANBU.

Worriedforhealth · 28/02/2020 11:43

No its not one of the towns in lockdown, but not too far away from them. Cant remember names of exact places just know he is flying home from rome. We have discussed this thiugh so i know its not far from affected areas.

He sounds like an idiot.

onalongsabbatical · 28/02/2020 11:47

So he only needs to self-isolate if he develops symptoms. And you can choose not to see him, entirely reasonable, but it's also reasonable of him not to self-isolate. Unless he develops symptoms. Because that's the official advice.

Parker231 · 28/02/2020 11:47

If it’s not one of the listed towns, I don’t see the problem.

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 11:48

Northern Italy is fine as PP’s have said, just not the eleven isolated towns. Jesus, people are really buying into the coronavirus hysteria. I can’t wait till it dies down.

chipsandgin · 28/02/2020 11:51

It’ll be people like him that mean the virus spreads and the situation escalates & all the people who aren’t selfish pricks also get put at risk.

What a self-centered cockwomble.

Maybe as he wont catch anything anyway he could share his secret of super immunity with the medical profession & solve the whole global pandemic issue - he could solve the problem rather than be it!?

Maybe you not being there on his return should become longer term plan..

Rome is far from the quarantined towns though! It's over 300km from Pisa, which is the furthest south in Italy where self isolation (only in cases where symptoms are experienced) is advised.

Frazzled2207 · 28/02/2020 11:55

I think anywhere in the vicinity of Rome is fine, as is anywhere in theory outside the 10 towns.

He's being a bit of a prat about it though, there is a very high chance of the fixtures being cancelled anyway. Ditto the flights.

Devlesko · 28/02/2020 11:57

There was rumour of sporting fixtures continuing in closed conditions.

OhCaptain · 28/02/2020 11:59

I think he sounds like a knob because of his attitude!

Just because he’ll be fine doesn’t mean he couldn’t Carry it to someone who won’t be fine!

Also not washing his hands is vile.

AnneKipanki · 28/02/2020 12:01

Rome is fine at the moment .

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/02/2020 12:01

I would not be impressed OP, have literally just read that there is a confirmed UK case of a traveller returned from Italy who went to none of the affected zones. Regardless anyone with common sense and a bit of decency would already have realised that it would be more sensible to avoid travel in order not to become a vehicle for a virus.

Peoples selfishness and stupidity clearly knows no bounds though does it. Others safety is trumped by our pathetic entitlement to a jolly it would seem! I wouldn't want him back, and genuinely would inform him he was to arrange self isolation elsewhere. he sounds grim anyway - no washing of hands after the toilet etc, vile.

Parker231 · 28/02/2020 12:03

He isn’t going anywhere near the at risk area - why are you thinking he shouldn’t go?

AnneKipanki · 28/02/2020 12:04

My H works for an Italian company in the UK . If someone has recently been or is in Northern Italy just now they have to self isolate for 2 weeks before coming in to work .
(ALSO APPLIES TO OTHER COUNTRIES ON THE LIST )

DDiva · 28/02/2020 12:07

Personally I think it's different if you had something booked already, you may not get money back. But to choose now to increase the risk to yourself and those around you is very selfish. I'm quite cautious anyway.

Theres a real risk that his flights or the event may still be cancelled and advice could change causing issues returning. Equally he could go and have no issues at all.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/02/2020 12:15

I know of 2 situations where people refused to self isolate. And didn’t one of the Royals say they weren’t going to? One of Fergie’s kids. Not very up on royal names. Anyway it is dickhead behaviour.

One person returned from China and was told be his work place to stay at home and not go into the office. He went in anyway😡

And a family came back from skiing in Italy and didn’t self isolate. Mum dad and kids went straight back to school and work.

Cos it won’t happen to them🤔😡

toomuchtooold · 28/02/2020 12:18

There's people in Switzerland now who've tested positive after returning from Milan and Verona, so I suspect that Italy is going to be in full on pandemic in the next few days. Be surprised if the last of those sporting fixtures didn't end up being cancelled.
