Dp voluntarily going to north italy! AIBU

Dp is booking a trip to north italy to watch a few sporting fixtures. Regularly has sporting holidays with his mates.
It is only a long weekend, but will be flying into and staying in the areas that have been affected by coronavirus.
He is booking it this weekend and going next weekend. Although advice is not to go to these areas of italy he said he isnt bothered and wont catch anything anyway.

AIBU to persuade him not to go? I know its his trip, im not going and nothing to do with me but think its a stupid move to still book and go!!
Said when he comes back he will not self isolate and will carry on as normal. Am i over reacting, is it not as bad as the media make out? He cant see my problem!

And how does he know what the situation next weekend will look like? He needs good cancellation insurance and to be prepared to cancel. It’s only sport FGS. Not essential travel by any definition.

AnneKipanki · 28/02/2020 10:14

On foreign office website it says if you have been to Northern Italy and develop symptoms your have to contact your GP. Phone , not attend , obviously.

Worriedforhealth · 28/02/2020 10:14

Lots of great answers thank you!
It is to spain and italy, so lots of travel on trains and planes overvthe course of the weekend too! Spain sporting events all still going ahead and italy ones at the minute are going ahead too. Still a chance of those ones getting cancelled.

He will not self isolate he has said and thinks im over reacting when I said i wont be seeing him for 2 weeks after return!
Thank god no kids to risk infecting!!

It's also being said that the scale of the problem in Italy has been exaggerated because they have chosen to include in their statistics people who have tested positive but who have not developed any symptoms.

But can't they still transmit it, even if they don't have symptoms themselves?

iheartislesofwight · 28/02/2020 10:16

sounds like something to boast about at a later date, 'i was in the thick of it, everyone was really scared, but i thought fuck this i'm here for a good time' what a twat.

That isn't exaggerating, that is accurate reporting of figures of those infected. Countries who are only reporting those seriously affected are the ones who are giving inaccurate figures.

Heebeejeebie · 28/02/2020 10:18

Oh he's one of those Hmm

He's well 'ard he is #nails

wibdib · 28/02/2020 10:19

How can he both self isolate and carry on as normal?

Will he be able to work from home for 2 weeks or will he need leave? And if he gets quarantined in Italy then needs another couple of weeks at home on top of that - except you wouldn’t want him there with you... do you think he sees it as a way to get a free couple of weeks holiday at home to relax and watch box sets sets or sport?

And given there is so much hooha about coronavirus in Italy at the moment, even if he doesn’t go to one of the currently affected towns, will he be able to get insurance to cover him if it spreads to his bit of Italy and he is quarantined or ill or needs a medical flight home as insurers are very good at wriggling out of obligations especially given the short time before booking - different if he had booked 6 months ago but a week? They may well exclude it or charge lots if included.

Sounds really selfish and short sighted in the circumstances.

MollyButton · 28/02/2020 10:25

He will not self isolate he has said and thinks im over reacting when I said i wont be seeing him for 2 weeks after return!

I'd probably LTB over this. Totally arrogant and self centred. I couldn't put up with that myself.

Wheresthebeach · 28/02/2020 10:30

Well he's a dick in my view.

You're right to keep away from him when he returns. Is he's the sort to come down with symptoms and dismiss as 'just a cold'...I'd be very careful when he gets back.

PaddyF0dder · 28/02/2020 10:32

If he goes on that trip he’s a ducking idiot.

pasturesgreen · 28/02/2020 10:36

Lots of sporting events in Italy are being cancelled or postponed these days, so will they even let him enter the stadium? If he can manage to get there in the first place, as I heard airlines are cancelling flights as well.

Yanbu, he's behaving like an idiot.

Egghead68 · 28/02/2020 10:36

Book yourself into a hotel for 2 weeks when he gets home (or better still LTB).

FizzyIce · 28/02/2020 10:41

I definitely haven’t been caught up in the mass panic of this virus but travelling to a place which has a very high percentage of cases voluntarily is bloody idiotic .
Tell him if he goes he can lock himself in a hotel room for 2 weeks when he gets back

FizzyIce · 28/02/2020 10:41

Yes better idea as above - he can pay for a hotel for 2 weeks for you and he becomes under house arrest

edwinbear · 28/02/2020 10:42

YABU. DS's school wrote to us only yesterday saying currently, the school ski trip to Northern Italy (not one of the named towns) is going ahead as planned in the Easter holidays. They are obviously in touch with the tour company and watching FCO guidance so this may change accordingly, but currently no plans to cancel. I trust them completely to make the right decision in the interests of both staff and pupils. If there are lots of spare places with other people cancelling, I will happily take one of their hands!

Parker231 · 28/02/2020 10:46

Where is he going? To one of the at risk areas or just in Northern Italy? If it’s not an affected area, it’s no different than getting the tube to work each day.

Andtwomakesix · 28/02/2020 10:46

Will he be allowed to work? We are asking those returning to self-isolate and work from home for the next two weeks. If one person gets ill here everyone does so we are trying to prevent everyone getting hysterical.

gingersausage · 28/02/2020 10:47

If going was so dangerous, flights would be cancelled and the foreign office would be advising against travel, which they aren’t apart from to the very small area of 10 towns. Until that happens, anyone who would divorce their husband over this is utterly pathetic. If he’s doing it to get a rise out of you, he is also utterly pathetic, but it worked didn’t it 🙄.

lunar1 · 28/02/2020 10:50

No way would he be coming home after that trip right now! There are doubts as to if two weeks is actually long enough for isolation of coronavirus.

OneOfTheGrundys · 28/02/2020 10:51

He sounds like a right catch. 🙄
This is how this virus has spread. Silly man.

greeneyedlulu · 28/02/2020 10:52

Been talking about this just now to my dad and I said it's not that I'm a hypochondriac but I just don't trust others to ensure they follow simple guidelines like hand washing and self isolating if required! Your dp has proved me right and it's his attitude that is helping to spread this. Shocking really. I feel for you.

Parker231 · 28/02/2020 11:00

FCO advise - is he going to one of these towns?

The FCO advise against all but essential travel to 10 small towns in Lombardy (Codogno, Castiglione d’Adda, Casalpusterlengo, Fombio, Maleo, Somaglia, Bertonico, Terranova dei Passerini, Castelgerundo and San Fiorano) and one in Veneto (Vo’ Euganeo), which have been isolated by the Italian authorities due to an ongoing outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19).

DesLynamsMoustache · 28/02/2020 11:08

But if he's not going to one of the affected towns/areas, why would he need to self-isolate anyway? That isn't the advice from the government, is it?
