Worried I have Coronavirus

I know this might sound silly or far fetched but hear me out..

I'm very rarely ill. Probably once a year if that. But now I have the most horrendous cough, I can't catch my breath sometimes when the coughing starts. It's come out of nowhere and I'm absolutely floored.

Im seriously worried that it's something sinister. Like I said I'm rarely ill so this is out of sorts for me. I feel like I can't function because of the sore throat, coughing and general feeling of being unwell.

AIBU here? It's just so scary with everything that is going on at the moment, I'm thinking all sorts in my head.

My friend is a GP and had a patient come in who claimed they thought they had corona virus. The GP surgery had to take it seriously and follow procedures and qurentine him, while they sent his blood off for tests and they had to have the entire waiting area and paitent room, plus anywhere he had been professionally cleaned that exact moment. Well, results came back the same day, negative. This is what is going to keep happening when the hysterical lot, like those on Mumsnet keep worrying about it. The NHS is already stretched so don't make it worse!

Tombliwho · 04/02/2020 19:41

FrankiesKnuckle oh I don't doubt it. I'm waiting for my neighbour to suddenly be struck down with it. She is a serial ambulance abuser. I believe last weeks episode ended up being a just a heavy cold and she was promptly sent home from A&E🙄

Littlemeadow123 · 04/02/2020 19:41

Being worried over corona virus is probably making your symptoms feel worse than they are. I could list over a dozen commonplace illnesses that cause the same symptoms as yours. However, if you have had a cough for over a week you should probably get checked by your GP as you may have a chest infection.

Please don't go to A&E with this unless a GP thinks that you should.

Bunnyfuller · 04/02/2020 19:42

Very little P2P spread outside China, and its usually pretty much a cold anyway.

Good old media, scaring the fuck out of people.

GreyHare · 04/02/2020 19:42

There is a horrendous cough/cold/chesty thing doing the rounds, it has lingered on for 3 weeks, my mum has had too and was ill for a month recovered for a week and has now gone down with another bout of something similar, lots of warm drinks, I recommend Twinnings Lemon and Ginger Tea with a good dollop of honey and before bed a slug of whiskey, rest and lots of tissues as I have never produced so much snot in my life.

I hope you feel better soon but it will not be Corona Virus.

itsamood · 04/02/2020 19:44

Yep definitely coronavirus. Wink

Needmorecaffine · 04/02/2020 19:47

I had similar symptoms at beginning of January. Just about getting over the cough. Lots going round.

ferretface · 04/02/2020 19:49

Hey OP, you're OK, there is absolutely no reason to think you have the coronavirus. There are lots of nasty bugs going round at this time of year. It's just health anxiety making you worry.

Are you under a lot of stress at the moment? Imo health anxiety is usually related to some more general anxiety. I think it would be worth seeing if your GP can refer you for some help about these worrisome thoughts and in the meantime try and keep yourself occupied as much as possible and dont give yourself opportunity to ruminate (hard while you have a cold but what I mean is try not to sit there googling and worrying etc. Instead if you have a hobby then do that, start a new TV series or book etc)

Hannie123 · 04/02/2020 19:49

I currently have the same symptoms and I am rarely ill too, once a year usually but sometimes not even that. It’s just that season, it happens but if you genuinely think there’s a chance call 111, rather than go in.

Lweji · 04/02/2020 19:50

Whatever you have, don't go to the GP. Call the health line first. They'll tell you what to do.
Either to reassure you or your send the doomsday teams.

FenellaMaxwell · 04/02/2020 19:52

You have a cold. An ordinary, standard cold. Take a lemsip. You also have racism, but I’m afraid there’s no over the counter remedy for that.

Lightsabre · 04/02/2020 19:53

We had some Government guidance at work today. A cough is not one of the symptoms apparently.

SebandAlice · 04/02/2020 19:55

This English doctor goes through a known Coronavirus day by day symptoms here

m.youtube.com/watch?v=h1naDPFio04

If you watch it you will see your symptoms don’t match up.

PatellarTendonitis · 04/02/2020 19:56

It's a cold. You don't need to see a doctor for a cold.

simonisnotme · 04/02/2020 19:56

i had that cough lasting over 4 and half weeks -antibiotics last wed cough now just about gone
unless you have been to china its just a bloody annoying virus/infection

Thoughtlessinengland · 04/02/2020 19:58

Yes I think you have coronavirus. And yes I think you caught it off your DP who caught it off the “young Chinese girl”.

All I have thought about since all this began is how fortunate I feel not to be Chinese or Chinese looking at this time as I cannot imagine the shite they are having to put up with in public spaces out and about, and how scared they are feeling in their own skin - walking down roads late or whatever. Anxiety and fear and panic is the perfect formula for any negative “ism” - racism included - always to be denied by saying its fear, not a phobia. But irrational fear and phobias go hand in hand.

ChasingRainbows19 · 04/02/2020 19:58

OP I have a similar thing that several posters have described. @WhyNotMe40 pretty much described my symptoms the last few days.
I too am rarely ill I work In the NHS with children so I've good immunity. But every couple of years something gets a bloody good hold.

Feels a bit like flu but not as bad ( I've had flu!) so probably just a bad virus. I'm on day 4/5 and starting to feel a bit better finally. My chest is a bit tight so expecting a cough tho not breathless.

Not worried about coronavirus though. Waiting to see if anyone that's been in York or close proximity to those that tested positive develop anything within 2 weeks.

DartmoorChef · 04/02/2020 19:59

Most of my town has had the cold and cough bug that is going round since Xmas. It's the time of year for it.

Bowerbird5 · 04/02/2020 20:04

There has been a virus doing the rounds before Christmas with the symptoms you are describing but if you are worried see your GP or have a telephone appointment. Hope you feel better soon.

SlippersAndThePaper · 04/02/2020 20:07

I'm prepping, I'm thinking about buying tamiflu... so i take the pandemic seriously.

For Coronavirus? Hmm

You do realise you have to take tamiflu within 24 hours of onset of symptoms and even then the evidence for its effectiveness isn’t all that. But carry on....

37.2 isn’t a temperature.

WhyNotMe40 · 04/02/2020 20:11

@ChasingRainbows19 hope you feel better soon! Yes I agree it's almost like a flu except the onset was too slow - hard that imminent cold feeling at the back of the throat for at least a day! Also I am on day 5 and am up and about, just coughing and slow Grin
The worst bit was as a pp said and not being able to breathe well enough to eat my favourite chocolate stash Sad

Oakmaiden · 04/02/2020 20:12

37.2 isn’t a temperature

Well, it is. It just isn't a high temperature.

Although it could be if it is an underarm or forehead reading.

You don’t even have the symptoms of Coronavirus, let alone the thing itself.

Reginabambina · 04/02/2020 20:14

I’ve been coughing like a Victorian dogooder for about two months. There are a few things going around.
