Worried I have Coronavirus

I know this might sound silly or far fetched but hear me out..

I'm very rarely ill. Probably once a year if that. But now I have the most horrendous cough, I can't catch my breath sometimes when the coughing starts. It's come out of nowhere and I'm absolutely floored.

Im seriously worried that it's something sinister. Like I said I'm rarely ill so this is out of sorts for me. I feel like I can't function because of the sore throat, coughing and general feeling of being unwell.

AIBU here? It's just so scary with everything that is going on at the moment, I'm thinking all sorts in my head.

I'm not going to bother wasting my GPs time. It just concerned me that I'm ill at this time, especially when it's out of character for me. Now that I think of it though, my DP is also ill. There is a young Chinese girl at his work who was off for a couple weeks as she went visiting family.

God, now I'm scared Sad

I'm sure if she had Coronavirus you'd know about it by now. She'd be in quarantine and the health authorities would know.

You should go to the doctor though...to get help for your anxiety.

TheMustressMhor · 04/02/2020 19:20

When you have health anxiety, once you're proved not to have something, your mind will just obsess on the next thing.

I don't know why I suggested getting a GP appointment to you. That was stupid of me.

Sorry OP. I know you're worried but I'm sure you just have a bad cold.

ChipotleBlessing · 04/02/2020 19:20

Being scared because your DH works with a Chinese person and you have a cold is just racism.

CakeandCustard28 · 04/02/2020 19:20

I doubt the young Chinese girl had it. There’s only two confirmed cases in the UK and they’re in hospital in Newcastle. Stop panicking you do not have Coronavirus you’ll be fine.

BirdieFriendBadge · 04/02/2020 19:20

Coronavirus or not.

If you're struggling to breath then you've got a nasty chest infection and could do with a GP checking it.

CV is no more worrying than the flu etc.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thelnebriati · 04/02/2020 19:21

You can tell if you have a cold because the cold symptoms clear up after about 4 days, if its the flu it lasts up to 2 weeks. The chesty cough lasts for several weeks.

Its nothing like coronavirus, thats so much more serious.

adaline · 04/02/2020 19:21

Sounds like the cold I had just after Christmas.

Lasted about three weeks, give or take.

TheMustressMhor · 04/02/2020 19:22

It really isn't racism.

It's just health anxiety manifesting itself.

crosstalk · 04/02/2020 19:23

If you're having difficulty breathing call 111. You can get ordinary flu which turns to pneumonia. A number of people, usually elderly, get this. Is your husband's Chinese colleague ill? If she isn't, or came back over 2 weeks ago, you are over worrying.

Eckhart · 04/02/2020 19:24

Have you got a fever, OP?

Moomin12345 · 04/02/2020 19:24

So what if you do? The mortality rate is just marginally higher than the flu's (assuming you've got an average immune system).

Interestedwoman · 04/02/2020 19:25

Hi OP and @MNHQ , could you consider changing the thread title to 'worried I have Coronavirus' or something so it doesn't make us all freak out? Or maybe it's just me. :)

I'm sure you don't have it OP. Feel better soon xxx

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 04/02/2020 19:26

Give it a couple of days and if your chest hasn't improved, go to the doctor's.

minniemoll · 04/02/2020 19:27

My GPs has a notice on the door saying not to attend the surgery if you're worried about coronavirus, but to ring 111 instead. Maybe give them a ring for advice/reassurance? It does sound like the cold that's doing the rounds though, I had it for two weeks just after New Year, it was horrible, especially the cough.

BennytheBall · 04/02/2020 19:27

I sympathise - that you've got rampant health anxiety, not that you've got coronavirus.

OhDeez · 04/02/2020 19:28

We got a text from the GP saying that if we think we have it, NOT to go to the surgery, but to call them.

ohshit2020 · 04/02/2020 19:28

Thanks everyone I am sure it's just a cold. Will give it a few days see how I feel. In the meantime I'm drinking plenty of fluids and resting as much as possible

Eckhart · 04/02/2020 19:30

Do you have a high temperature, OP?

ohshit2020 · 04/02/2020 19:34

@Eckhart I will check it now

FrankiesKnuckle · 04/02/2020 19:35

@Tombliwho

The ambulance service is also over run with completely unfounded coronavirus calls.
Well whipped up by the media - looking at you Daily Fail.

ohshit2020 · 04/02/2020 19:35

Temp is 37.2

Batmanandbobbin · 04/02/2020 19:36

Hey OP! I feel exactly how you describe, my DP works where there are a lot of people visiting from China and I said to him I thought he had brought the illness into the home. However, he pointed out DD and DS2 had the same bug a few weeks ago... here’s hoping for you (and me) a speedy recovery. Feel better soon - I have that much self pity I’m trying to eat my emergency chocolate but I can’t breath well enough to eat it Sad x

SoupDragon · 04/02/2020 19:37

Your symptoms sound exactly like the cold I had at the start of January. I felt truly awful!

Eckhart · 04/02/2020 19:40

Fever is defined as above 38, so it looks like you're in the clear, OP. Your symptoms wouldn't have developed this far without bringing a fever with them, so you probably don't even have flu. Maybe a cold with a bit of a chest infection thrown in.

That said, chest infections are exhausting, so there's no wonder you feel wiped out. Respect your body's request for rest. Netflix isn't available on prescription - but it should be ;)
