What is in 'complete collapse' in your opinion? Yes, the US is trying their usual bully boy tactics. Do you think China and Russia will comply? Are you assuming that the new US tactics will work? They sound pretty desperate to me.
As @trumpredcard says, you might not be able to literally eat oil but it is essential for everything that is of economic value. Iran is far, far more self sufficient in terms of energy and food than say....the UK.

Add to that the Iranian threat of if we starve (due to the sanctions) the whole region starves too (and a lot of the World).

The GCC states have been a really important source of investment into American companies, this dries up Americans starve.

Col Wilkerson was polite calling Bessent inexperienced, it's like that administration thinks we haven't watched the intervention to prop up the Japanese Yen which only bought a few days respite. Ironically the problems Japan are experiencing are mainly due to them being reliant on Gulf Oil, which Trump disrupted.

Approximately 60ish days to the midterms, let's hope that electorate sends a message to these bully boys.

Timeline is irrelevant. Iran has already stated it will come to Turkey's aid if it is attacked by Israel. If Turkey and Pakistan want to invite Iran to join the pact, Saudi will comply even if they're not happy. Without a doubt though there would have to be a resolution to the Houthis/PLC issue. There almost was but fighting has flared up again at the moment.

Timeline won’t seem irrelevant to the countries Iran is currently attacking via proxies. Hence the rumour was false.

Newbutoldfather · 26/08/2026 12:13

I sometimes think that people (and even people who should know better in the media) don’t understand the military reality).

Israel’s iron dome depends on expensive sophisticated missiles and they have expended most of them. They take years to restock. There were reports that Israel had started being selective about which ballistic missiles to shoot down (meaning many were allowed to get through). There was also talk of Israel censoring the damage it was taking from Iran. I have no idea whether this is true.

They just aren’t in a position to attack another country now which has a significant ballistic missile threat. Even the U.S is suffering the same problem. They have relocated missile defences from South Korea to the Iranian theatre.

It’s a completely made up scenario re Israel attacking Turkey.

Alice in Wonderland territory again.

Newbutoldfather · 26/08/2026 14:41

@Twiglets1 ,

‘Alice in Wonderland territory again.’

Definitely, although when I look at the recent news there is a surprising amount of animosity between them at the moment.

They could clash in Syria, but they would both be foolish to do so.

Umm, if I recall, the first thing I said on this subject is that it appears the rumour is false. Strange how a Lebanese media outlet released the story though only for Iran to publicly deny it soon after. Maybe the story was released prematurely before the negotiations had been finalised.

Twiglets1 · 26/08/2026 14:59

According to Ynet, Turkey is now the Muslim Brotherhood’s most powerful state so no wonder there is animosity.

Doesn't mean Israel is about to attack them obviously, think they have their hands full at the moment!

Okay. What did this statement mean then.

Naftali Bennett and members of the Israeli security establishment publicly classified Turkey as the new Iran warning that "after Iran, we will not remain idle".

Yes you said it appears the rumour is false but still argued with me over several posts because I said the rumour was nonsensical.

I don't know, very possibly just rhetoric like that spouted routinely by both Trump and the Iran leadership.

In any case the dispute is about what the rumour said was about to happen now not about what could theoretically happen "after Iran".

Summary
Iran, Oman agree on share of territory, revenues from Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Revolutionary Guards say
Strait remains blockaded, some shippers deterred by blacklist
Oil prices fall despite latest US sanctions

@Squeezingwildoranges ,

‘Nafta pi Bennett and members of the Israeli security establishment publicly classified Turkey as the new Iran warning that "after Iran, we will not remain idle’

It’s posturing ahead of the election by an ex politician trying to make a come back.

It’s still crazy though.

Newbutoldfather · 26/08/2026 15:30

Do remember, also, that the U.S publicly reprimanded Israel for the strikes on the proposed (or not proposed) airbase in Syria.

No one has any desire for further escalation between Turkey and Israel.

Oman, Iran say will establish temporary lane through Strait of Hormuz, clear mines

In a joint statement issued by Oman and Iran, the countries said that upon discussions between the respective foreign ministers, a proposed framework has been decided upon regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
The framework involves:

  1. The establishment of a joint temporary shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz
  2. A joint project to clear the strait of mines.

The statement confirmed that the two sides will continue with technical negotiations to reach an agreement on a permanent shipping lane and future management of the important waterway.
They also discussed "a mechanism for exchanging information, managing navigation traffic, and providing related navigational and security services," said the statement.
This comes minutes after US President Donald Trump said that the strait had already been cleared of mines.

So is the SoH mine free or not? My take is that shipping companies will still be cautious and not believe Trump's claim until there is corroboration from Iran.

If Iran start to allow certain boats through like for example China, the US will go nuts because it will send a message to former allies that making a deal with Iran will ensure smooth transit of energy to them. The US strategy of escorting ships through the straight is unworkable from a financial point of view unless the US starts charging the ships or the oil producing states. This, of course, will annoy everyone as the straights were perfectly open before they started this war of choice. This has literally turned into a total disaster for the US. They need to accept that they totally messed this up and concede to Iran's demands at the negotiating table instead of trying to strong arm them. It's the only way to extricate themselves from the mess.

No normal person, no. However, there are some pretty big egos involved in this war. Bibi and Erdogan being two of them.

Both sides are really hurting here.

The question is who will blink first.

There are clearly voices in Iran who want a settlement (Pezeshkian for one). Equally, there is only so much longer the West can release long term oil reserves before things get very painful.

Ideally, Iran would agree to give up or dilute 60% uranium, open the strait and accept unfreezing of long term frozen assets. In return the U.S would pull back from a war footing.

Of course, the Iranian proxies and Israel complicate things. But that would be a good start.

However, sometimes brinkmanship lives up to its name and countries go over the brink. The U.S could eviscerate Iran from the air and Iran would in turn go after every oil facility and desalination plant it could and maybe spark an unprecedented flow of refugees.

Iran's economy is buckling after nearly 6 months of war. These 5 charts show the damage.

Trump signaled that he's ready to let the economic toll of the war be the force that brings Iran back to the negotiating table.

It's easy for us to be armchair critics but let's remember how much Iran is suffering too, in spite of historic resilience against sanctions. Will we see an internal revolt after all?

Khamenei camp rattles sabres abroad as fuel smuggling, inflation stoke anger at home
Amid the economic war announced by the Trump administration on Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei's senior aide Mohsen Rezaie has renewed threats against all Gulf oil exporters even as a former official has admitted Tehran is bracing for "internal unrest" and a potential uprising "in the coming weeks" fuelled by corruption within the regime.
Newly-appointed Iranian national security adviser Mohsen Rezaie has threatened Iran’s Gulf neighbours: “If the economic war continues, not a single drop of oil will be exporte, neither through the Strait of Hormuz nor from anywhere in the Gulf.”
Furthermore, according to him, Iran will view the participation of other countries in these American sanctions as "an act of war".
...
The threat only repeat previous threats against neighbours and shipping, but they are seen as a collective sign of panic within the regime amid worsening internal contradictions within its halls of power given the hyperinflation and internal reports of corruption.
....
A senior Iranian government official, meanwhile, has said members of both major political factions are involved in "fuel-smuggling networks", highlighting the scale of a trade that authorities say drains heavily subsidised fuel from the domestic market.
Esmail Saqab Esfahani, a presidential deputy responsible for fuel optimisation and strategic energy management, said efforts to curb the trade faced resistance from politically connected interests, as per The Iran Watcher.
Esfahani warned that those affected could retaliate, saying they could “smash the windows” of his office.
Iranian officials have previously estimated that between 20 million and 30 million litres of fuel are smuggled out of the country each day.
Esfahani's claim cannot be independently verified.
...
It suggests, though, that the trade is driven largely by the gap between Iran's heavily subsidised domestic fuel prices and higher prices in neighbouring countries.
The scale of the alleged smuggling has raised concerns about losses to the government and pressure on Iran's fuel supplies. Moving such volumes requires extensive access to fuel distribution, transport and cross-border networks.

The remarks also underscore broader concerns about corruption and politically connected economic interests in Iran, where authorities have repeatedly blamed both smuggling and international sanctions for strains on the economy and public finances.
Iranian officials have periodically announced crackdowns on fuel smuggling, but the trade has continued to pose a major economic challenge
...
Former Economy Minister Ehsan Khandoozi warned that “all the signs” point to “unrest and then war” during Shahrivar and Mehr, covering roughly late August through late October. Khandoozi, who served under Ebrahim Raisi, is warning against raising key prices as regime insiders warn of what could trigger another flareup of protests. This time, instead of the opposition issuing the warning, Khandoozi, a former regime economy minister is publicly warning that the conditions inside Iran point toward unrest followed by war. In another indication that the Islamic Republic is preparing for the possibility that the next major threat to its survival erupts from within. On Sunday, The Iran Watcher cited a "leaked IRGC-Basij” meeting reveals a regime terrified that another nationwide uprising is coming. In the closed Pakdasht meeting, officials warned that the conditions driving previous protests have not disappeared and that rising fuel could trigger unrest.

@TopPocketFind ,

I don’t see the need for the sarcasm, but thanks for the link.

I don’t actually subscribe to the Telegraph as it is normally really quite right wing and low on quality, but it does have the odd interesting article.

This was an opinion piece of course and behind a paywall.
