Should the international community sanction Israel over settler violence in West Bank?

The problem of Israeli terrorism is getting worse and worse. Just over the past few weeks amongst other things Israeli terrorists have killed multiple people, commited sexual assault, beaten and threatened to rape young Palestinian girls, continually attacked the residents and property of the only remaining fully Christian town in the West Bank, stolen 100s of sheep from the Bedouin community, beaten activists who are there to provide a protective presence to Palestinians, set fire to property.

Palestinians don't have the right to defend themselves from this violent, rapidly escalating Israeli terrorism. They can't arrest and detain the Israeli terrorists. They are sitting ducks with no means of protecting themselves from beatings and sexual violence. Is it time that the international community steps in and sanctions Israel until they can control their obvious terrorism problem? What else can be done to try and protect innocent people from this escalating Israeli violence?

@Ellen2shoes ,

To be honest I hate the ‘genocide’ word and am unconvinced that Israel has (yet) committed a genocide, although it could still happen.

I don’t think you can compare Israel’s actions with the Shoah, for instance, or what happened in Rwanda.

That doesn’t mean Israel hasn’t committed war crimes or isn’t engaged in ethnic cleansing or illegal expansion. But getting people (especially Jews) to buy into the idea that Israel has committed genocide will be a lot harder.

Ellen2shoes · 24/08/2026 10:02

Regardless of whether people believe there is a genocide taking place, the plausibility of genocide demands that governments take action to prevent it.

Withholding sanctions until a fait accompli is obviously not a feasible plan.

I see the Netherlands have pulled out of Eurovision again due to Israel’s participation. However, I don’t think a singing competition is going to have Israel quaking in its boots.

Francesca Albanese is calling for the urgent establishment of an international protective presence in West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, arguing that third states are bound by ICJ rulings to end the occupation.

“An International Protection Presence in West Bank/east Jerusalem and Gaza is absolutely URGENT,” Albanese wrote on X.
She linked the demand directly to the responsibilities of other states under international law.
“Third states have an obligation, per the ICJ, to act to end Israel’s unlawful occupation,” Albanese said, referring to the International Court of Justice.

Reminding countries of their legal obligations - a thankless task.

Their choice ... it won't make any difference to Israel or to the competition really but it seems like it's a political statement they want to make.

As Ynet reports The Dutch decision indicates that the dispute over Israel’s presence in the competition is set to continue into another Eurovision season, despite efforts by organizers to address concerns raised by participating broadcasters.

This was in the ipaper today:

“Last month, the UN reported that there have been more than 1,300 settler attacks this year against 250 Palestinian communities, resulting in 880 injuries and 18 deaths, the highest figures since records began.
Land seizures and displacement of Palestinian populations have also sharply escalated, according to watchdogs. Israel’s leading human rights group, B’Tselem, said settlers had taken 100,000 hectares of land from Palestinians over the past three years – about 18 per cent of the West Bank – and 64 communities of around 4,000 residents have been displaced.
Some recent incidents have drawn opposition from even Israel’s staunchest supporters. A group of settlers surrounded a home in the village of Qusra last week owned by a Palestinian-American, Loui Ridi, and remained there for days, blocking access as the family inside were reported to be running low on food and water.”
As the Israeli army failed to disperse the crowds, the US government intervened. Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, branded the settlers “Israeli terrorists”. The White House reportedly pressed Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister, to issue a condemnation, which never came.
“Huckabee, an evangelical Christian with a long record of support for settlements, followed up with comments on Thursday that invoked the Bible to condemn the settlers’ actions as a “violation of God’s law” and the commandment “Thou shalt not steal.”
The rebuke follows a cooling of relations between the White House and the Israeli leadership following the joint attack on Iran. Donald Trump has declined to endorse Netanyahu’s re-election bid ahead of the vote on 27 October, while Netanyahu has publicly rejected the peace plan for Gaza put forward by the Trump-created Board of Peace.
In December, Trump admitted that the United States and Israel did not agree “100 per cent” on the West Bank, when asked if he was concerned about Israeli settler violence.
The Israeli army now claims to have dismantled settler structures outside Ridi’s home and “deployed additional troops throughout the Qusra area in order to protect residents and maintain security”.”
“Activists and local media claim the harassment continues. A settler source, who did not wish to be named due to sensitivities, said the Israelis “are going to rebuild the settlement because they are not into giving the enemy territory back because the government wants to please the Americans”.
Analysts say the run-up to the Israeli election is a dangerous time as settlers seek to act before a possible change of government, with Netanyahu unwilling to restrain them.
The prime minister, who is reliant on radical settlers for votes and coalition partners, backed a budget last month with £319m for 34 new settlements, and tenders were issued this week for the E1 (East 1) “doomsday” settlement outside Jerusalem that would cut the West Bank in half and further diminish prospects of a Palestinian state.”
“Hugh Lovatt, a Middle East analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said the election period could see increased violence. “With the polls tight and elections fast approaching, Netanyahu and his coalition have little to lose and much to gain from further unleashing the settler movement,” he said. “This will inevitably lead to more settlement building, more settler violence and more Palestinian dispossession.”
Netanyahu’s government, which includes ultranationalist Bezalel Smotrich as finance minister with responsibility for the West Bank, has allowed 185 new outposts – illegal under even Israeli law – to be established, and either approved or retroactively legalised 103 settlements, since 2022.”
“B’Tselem spokesperson, Yair Dvir, said settler attacks and land grabs escalated with the arrival of this government, again after the Hamas masssacres of 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed, and yet again since the election was called last month.
“You go to the West Bank and you see the remains of Palestinian communities that used to live there not long ago, now totally erased by the settlers and the army that helped them, and we see how those attacks are expanding into more established villages and towns,” he told The i Paper. “We see big raids, sometimes hundreds of settlers, setting fire to homes, cars, mosques, attacking people and taking over their homes.”
Palestinians and solidarity activists have long complained that they receive no protection from the Israeli army against settlers, and offences against them are not punished. Data from Israeli watchdog Yesh Din showed that 94 per cent of cases of reported settler violence against Palestinians are closed without indictment. ”
“Eid Hathaleen, a resident of the Masafer Yatta village cluster in the southern West Bank that has been plagued by settler violence – a settler killed his cousin Awdah last year – said the raiders often wear military uniforms and are difficult to disntinguish from soldiers. “They both have assault rifles, and they stand shoulder to shoulder in the field,” he said.”
“B’Tselem has documented several cases in the area of soldiers expelling Palestinians from their land by declaring it a closed military zone, or “state land”, and then allowing settlers to take it over. Watchdogs say the creation of settler-only Israel Defence Forces (IDF) units in the West Bank and the distribution of guns by the state to settlers complicate policing.
An IDF spokesperson said troops are instructed to intervene in “violent incidents or incidents directed at Palestinians or their property. In such cases, the soldiers are obligated to act to stop the violation and to detain or arrest the suspects”.
But the surge in violence and displacements, and the lack of accountability to date, have fuelled calls for action against Israel. Israeli lawyers and activists have called for international sanctions against Major General Avi Bluth, IDF commander in the West Bank and a settler, for failing to curb the attacks.”
“European governments, including the UK, are threatening further sanctions over the issue, having already issued some targeted measures, including against Smotrich. On Wednesday, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband condemned settler violence and plans to advance the E1 settlement and said new sanctions would be announced “in the coming weeks”.
The US has said it will not allow a formal annexation of the West Bank. But key figures in the settler movement have described plans for a more gradual, informal takeover, which Smotrich has said would be “easier to swallow in the international and legal context”.
While the US and foreign governments escalate their rhetoric against settler excesses, the movement continues its campaign of conquest, with dangerous months ahead.

I don't think it will have Israel quaking in its boots but Eurovision lost 20% of its viewers in 2026. That's a significant number. If that number keeps up Eurovision will become more and more irrelevant and they will have to weigh up whether it is worth keeping war mongering countries in the competition.

This needs to follow through with things like European athletics and football. Europe took pity on Israel and allowed them to enter our competitions because nobody in their region wanted them, them being allowed to participate with us is a privilege not a right, personally I don't think that that privilege should be extended to nations that practice ethnic cleansing and apartheid. Sports boycotts helped with SA and their apartheid, there is no reason they shouldn't work with Israel too.

If it is just some 'boys on the hill', a 'handful of teenagers' and the majority of Israelis are against what is happening in the West Bank as we are being told then they can quickly sort it out and their privileges can be restored.

I read an article in Haaretz which stated that Israeli politicians had been shown video footage of a settler hitting a one legged Palestinian man on the back with an iron rod as he bent down to pick up his crutch, and also a video of settlers tying a donkey to a truck and dragging it along until it died. Guess which one garnered more outrage?

I saw both the videos. Absolutely vile. The old man was Saeed al-Amour who had lost his leg because he had been shot by settlers in April 2025. He tried to stop them from seizing his olive grove by unplugging their construction equipment. Following the shooting, Israeli police did not arrest the shooter. Instead, they briefly arrested al-Amour's son, who had filmed the incident, and later fined both al-Amour and his son under allegations of launching a violent attack.

It was a youtube link @TheLilacSnake so obviously YT. It's not a channel I have ever used. I linked to it because I was accused of making an antisemitic comment and was demonstrating that what I said was factual as Bibi himself had said as much. Obviously, someone finds Bibi's speech offensive, as do I, as it has been deleted.

Some good news maybe? From the Telegraph:

“Andy Burnham is poised to announce a ban on trade with settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
The Prime Minister has already pledged sanctions against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in response to controversial plans for thousands of new settler homes.
Mr Burnham is now considering a trade embargo within weeks. New sanctions on Israel would risk further harming relations, which have already deteriorated over Mr Netanyahu’s plans to construct homes in the E1 section of the West Bank.”

Your response to being accused of antisemitism is to link to a video on an antisemitic youtube channel?

And I don't think it was deleted because of Netanyahu's speech. There have been links to plenty of similar videos that haven't been deleted.

Of course a post wouldn’t be deleted just for linking to one of Netanyahu’s speeches. That wouldn’t be a rule break.

Was it an antisemitic channel? I looked on youtube to show the pp what Bibi had said about the importance of narrative control via the media and this was the first channel that came up. I've never used the channel before so have no idea whether it is designed to be antisemitic or not. The purpose was to show what Bibi had actually said, which demonstrated my point. Hope that clarifies things now.

@rainingsnoring ,

I think that these days, depressingly, it is so important to use reliable sources. I don’t even open links from dodgy sources, even if they seem interesting.

It is so easy with AI to make people say things that they never actually said.

Neither do I - even so-called reliable sources have to be taken with a large pinch of salt due to the likelihood of bias, but it's good to at least stick to legitimate sources (especially if sharing with others).

Palestinians being arrested for reporting Israeli violence to the authorities while authorities just watch violent Israelis attack Palestinians.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/settlers-filmed-attacking-activists-reporters-in-front-of-idf-troops-none-arrested/

Israeli authorities have been holding a Palestinian woman in custody for almost a week after she filed a police complaint about settlers allegedly torching her home.

The woman has been charged in a military court with filing a false complaint and harming regional security. Police claim the fire in the southern West Bank hamlet of Khillet al-Farra was actually caused by an electrical failure.

The woman told Palestinian media hours after the fire overnight Wednesday-Thursday that she woke up in the middle of the night to noises from masked men outside speaking in Hebrew. She said she saw them pour flammable liquid into the house and set it on fire.

A WhatsApp group of settler extremists that shares footage of their attacks on Palestinians posted footage of the incident later that day before deleting the clip shortly thereafter.

When she went to file a complaint on Thursday at a nearby police station, authorities took her into custody, Haaretz said.

At a remand hearing on Monday, police failed to present the court with the fire department’s final report on its findings from its probe into the fire.

A police statement hours after the fire overnight Wednesday-Thursday declared that it had not been caused by settlers. But a police representative at the hearing acknowledged that the matter is still being investigated and that arson had not yet been ruled out as a potential cause.

Justifying the charge against the woman for allegedly harming regional security, the police representative claimed spreading false information could lead to acts of revenge against Israelis.

Despite the apparent inconsistency in the police story, the court ordered that the woman be kept in custody for four more days.

Reminder, this is what happens to Palestinians in Israeli detention. This poor woman is facing being starved, assaulted and humiliated by Israeli officers in detention all because she was the victim of crime and reported her home being set on fire.

If that's what is popping up for you your youtube algorithm must be wild.

Looks like some of the so called Israeli left wants a piece of that West Bank pie too.

Gazit said he is aware of the damage West Bank settlements do to Palestinian rights, but argued that since new settlements will be built in the Jordan Valley in any case, it's preferable to have as many of them as possible populated by leftists.

If we don't steal it, somebody else will. It's a pretty grim attitude rather than focus on making government policy change and leaving Palestinian land to Palestinians they think that they will be a better type of occupiers so it's OK to take that free land, I mean Tel Aviv is expensive these days what are else are the youth supposed to do to get on that property ladder.

Just last Tuesday Netanyahu gave a speech delivered in Hebrew directly to West Bank settlers. The speech was reported on by Israeli media outlets like Channel 7 and the Times of Israel. In the speech he praised the crowd and told attendees, "You are fulfilling the vision of the Land of Israel, and this is our land. You are preparing the ground for a very large wave of immigration that will come."

Anyone who thinks the IDF will do anything to help the Palestinians when they are attacked by these foul settlers are dreaming. It is not random acts of violence by hooligans. It is state sponsored land theft.

I really don't think that was AI though. Do you? I'm not accusing you of this but I do think some people are so desperate to pick up on minor things, accuse other posters of this or that simply because they don't agree with their world view, that they keep missing the big picture.
