Israel attacked Iran early on Saturday morning, saying it had “launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran to remove threats to the state of Israel,” according to a military spokesman.

Israel closed its airspace and declared a state of emergency, in anticipation of
Iranian drone and missile strikes in response.

Explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday, Iranian media reported.

One possible negative effect of all this is the potential for thousands of Iranian hardliners and their proxies to claim asylum in the west. You'd like to think it couldn't happen but we already have 'former' IRGC, Hamas and Hezbollah members living here, and the lesser-known ones could easily destroy their documentation and claim they are from somewhere else.

Another possibility is Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis deciding they have nothing to lose and flooding into Iran in an attempt to take it back. They might not have a chance but it could get very bloody.

Interesting point- maybe the Green Party with their open borders will be welcoming former IRGC, Hamas and Hezbollah members as refugees into the UK?

Thanks for this
This has been discussed but thanks for the welcome update

Its so incredibly sad the reported number of young children killed according to the Guardian article has risen once again

The Green Party support a fair and humane managed migration system (and aren’t in power)

and Corbyn has voted against nearly every military action. So it’d hardly surprising he opposes this one.

Why the misinformation? Why not just argue using the truth?

Watching the the Islamo leftists trying to protest against US military action against Iran yet confused and conflicted by Iranian citizens demonstrating their support for the US military action is literally like watching a computer glitch.

Must make their heads explode.... but but but...

Anyway, Iranian people are celebrating.

peanutbuttertoasty · 28/02/2026 23:42

@AnSpideog fair to who? Anyone who fancies coming in, or to the country they are supposed to serve?

You must be joking right? Yeah because Afghanistan surely needs more war. How did the last one work out for them?

You dont liberate a people by bombing them.

This entire thread is pro war propaganda. I find it very ignorant and extremely distasteful. Does anyone know what happened to the last democratically elected government in Iran? Why they dont have democracy? US-Uk regime change operation took them out. War is evil people!

If you don't like the tread, unwatch it.

That's what I've done with the long running thread about Israel, it's really easy.

The thread was not intended as pro war propaganda but a place for people on Mumsnet to discuss an issue that interests them. Most of us want the current regime to be overthrown but would have been happy for that to have been achieved via peaceful negotiation had that been possible.

It's being reported on Iranian state media that Ayatollah Khamenei was killed early Saturday morning at his office “while he was carrying out tasks”.

Trump said Khamenei was "one of the most evil people in History"

I agree with that but also find the description above by @mids2019 most fitting, "beardy tyrant that slaughtered his own people".

Thank you for starting the thread on historical events in the middle east.

Of course the people that could gain the most from this conflict are the down trodden people of Iran and I sincerely hope we are in a position to celebrate the down call of a hideous regime which has terrorised its neighbours and own people for decades.

The depressing thing is seeing all those who can excuse a regime that slaughtered 30000 of its own people being defended by virtue signallers.

Twiglets1 · 01/03/2026 05:50

According to a Reuters translation of the statement confirming Khamenei's death he "drank the sweet, pure drought of martyrdom and joined the Supreme Heavenly Kingdom" ...anyway, he's dead.

What I've learnt on this board @mids2019 is that there are people who will excuse anything as long as the atrocities are not committed by Westerners or allies of the West.

Gaza is complicated for historical reasons (without wishing to get drawn into yet another debate about that), but to me, Iran should be straightforward. There is no reason I can see why we shouldn't all be on the side of the Iranian people who want to overthrow their horrible regime, particularly as women (which I assume most of us on Mumsnet are). I think there's a moral clarity to this issue which isn't always present in other conflicts around the world.

I understand that some people are against all wars. However, in this case the Iranian regime are responsible for so many awful things, both at home and internationally, that can't just continue to be ignored. They are not reasonable people, they could not be negotiated with or trusted and they do need to be overthrown. In my opinion.

I’ve been watching videos of Syrians celebrating as well, given the pain inflicted on them by Assad, Hezbollah and the IRCG I’m not surprised. Much love to the Iranian people, so many are grieving as well as celebrating right now.

Great news to wake up to.
But what next? Is Iran now going to plummet into a civil war?

UAE condemns Iranian attack

The United Arab Emirates has condemned Iran's attacks on its territory, calling it a "violation of national sovereignty and international law".

In a post on X, the UAE calls Iran's retaliatory strikes a dangerous escalation and "cowardly act" that threatens the safety of civilians and undermines stability.
Its defence ministry says it is on "high alert" and ready to deal with any threats.

It adds that its defence forces have intercepted 137 ballistic missiles and 209 drones launched toward the country. Fourteen of the drones that fell within the country's territories and waters caused "some collateral damage", it says.
