Israel attacked Iran early on Saturday morning, saying it had “launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran to remove threats to the state of Israel,” according to a military spokesman.

Israel closed its airspace and declared a state of emergency, in anticipation of
Iranian drone and missile strikes in response.

Explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday, Iranian media reported.

Right. He's the PM and he's just chaired COBRA.
I think it's probably important that he made a statement.

I suppose the confusion is because he didn't let the US use the military bases previously and this is a bit of a change.

The author seems to think that because Iran have said they're not a threat to the world then we should believe them.

There's a few thousand protesters who might have disagreed with that argument if they hadn't been murdered since the start of this year

I didn't detect a change, he just confirmed general support.

Quite.

That article is a loads of codswallop written by someone who is seemingly naive enough to trust the Iranian regime over western powers. Hmm.

Sadly, we've seen that's not uncommon.

Plus Labour seem hazy on their lines. Thornberry disagreeing with US this morning saying their actions were unlawful.

Plus the tone is very Starmer and bombastic, which is irritating.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 28/02/2026 16:53

Did I just hear right that Israel are calling up 70,000 reservists? Got the BBC on and if I'm wrong happy to be corrected.

Naive, or whatever Donald Trump does or says, then the writer thinks it is wrong?

Yup.

I got as far as “SOAS” in the byline and nearly gave up. But I persevered. And the article turned out to be everything I would expect from an academic at SOAS.

Very good article
with knowledgeable insight into the potential for global fallout.

Agree or disagree but the final para is poignant

‘ Diplomacy has to be prioritised. Attempting to force regime change by launching an illegal war is foolhardy. If Iran is further destabilised, the entire Middle East and beyond will be plunged into utter turmoil. From there the outcome for the whole world is dangerously uncertain’

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/02/2026 17:06

Has Putin said anything yet?

How many times do you expect diplomacy to win through? It is the ordinary folk in Iran who have been asking for help for weeks now after thousands of people have been killed by the regime.

peanutbuttertoasty · 28/02/2026 17:07

Is it not the case that the Iranian Regime has been acting to destabilise the ME for years? Funding Hamas etc etc

Yes. That has never been in doubt.

Good luck getting the Iranian regime to pay any attention to diplomacy.

I found an article about it from Yahoo news:

Israel is to call up around 70,000 reservists, most of them air defence specialists and home guard troops, a military spokesman said on Saturday.

"There will, however, also be a strong presence on our borders," he told journalists.

The spokesman said the military was prepared for "different scenarios" with respect to border protection and to possible attacks on Israel by Iran's allies.

Asked how long the military deployment would last, he responded: "As long as necessary."

The spokesman said Iran had so far launched dozens of missiles at Israel, but that there had been no serious hits.

Regarding Israeli attacks on Iran, he said: "Our initial salvoes were directed at targets relevant to our freedom to act."

Others had been directed at "targets of great significance, persons involved in the plan to destroy Israel," he said. The spokesman declined to provide further details.

How would you get diplomacy to work?

Up against some horrific mutilating practises from the regime how does it actually change things?

38thparallel · 28/02/2026 17:21

I believe that’s an unverified Iranian news agency report. The BBC has covered it too, along with the Iranian claim that Israel “targeted” the school with 3 missiles. Which sounds highly unlikely. I wouldn’t trust anything that the Iranian state says.

I agree and also the BBC shouldn’t report the unverified claim about the school until it was verified.
However I suppose it was an irresistible opportunity to show Trump and Israel in a bad light.

Sure. They've been in 'negotiations' but they lead nowhere.

Praying that it's successful.

I cannot believe how poorly reported Iran's genocide of its own people - carried out since the start of this year - has been.

And the country wants nuclear weapons.

If you look at the Middle East channels on Telegram, there's reports that Iranians are celebrating bombings of their own capital city.

What about Israel’s genocide in Gaza? (International Court of Justice confirmed it is a genocide). Would you agree then that other countries should launch strikes on Israel to stop their genocide in Gaza?

This thread is NOT about Gaza except that hopefully the regime that finances Hamas etc will be brought down. Please take your anti Israel rhetoric elsewhere.
