WM police at fault for banning Israelis in Birmingham

This quite frankly stinks. It seems to me the police have succumbed to local anti Semitic politicians and a vocal Muslim majority in the local area of the stadium to ban Israeli fans with what looked like fabricated reasons.

A woman with long fair hair stands at the Commons despatch box with green benches behind her. She is wearing a black suit and top, and a gold necklace.

MPs want answers on 'exaggerated' Villa-Maccabi match intelligence

Ministers ask West Midlands Police for more details on Israeli fans' ban at the match on 6 November.

Do you measure muslims' standards by Hamas? No, of course not and rightly so but you have no problem doing the same to the Jewish community. I think we've got the message.

Which message was that ? I've written loads.

Which one in particular did you like ?

And when you say "we", who is your companion ?

mouthpipette · 16/01/2026 22:27

Anyway, the long and short of it was, The fans didn't come, no one got hurt, there was a lot of bluster and bullshit, and there was deception, BUT no one got hurt. End of.

Oh and it was almost certainly cheaper. A lot of coppers must have missed out on some overtime.

You are correct in this but it was achieved caving into a combination of pressure from local Islamists and a tacit admission by the police that Birmingham is not safe for Israelis or British Jews.

The other key point for me is that the British Police should stand for the truth and taking the right decision and not just the easiest decision. In this case they fabricated information to fit the wrong but easiest solution of banning the Maccabi fans. The WMP appears to be acting under pressure from the dominant local faith but it has now lost the trust of impartiality by other sections and faiths of the West Midlands.

On that basis, shall we ban the weekly hate marches through central London? They are associated with a lot of arrests, and a huge cost to the public purse.

Absolutely agree with you.

There are too many people with abhorrent views on these threads that we give time to - they should be ignored really (someone remind me next time I get in a spat with one).

mids2019 · 17/01/2026 07:14

I am glad the WM police chief has rightly stood aside. However I think the main instigators for pushing for a ban on Israelis were local community leaders including politicians who are not standing aside and still have a public profile with known anti Semitic views. There was one Birmingham MP staunchly defending the police chief even though his position was untenable.....also I saw interviews with local politicians who were open that this was not about potential violence but about not welcoming Israelis due to the Gaza conflict. There are those that wish our cities to become no go areas for jews.

I completely agree. Its outrageous that they have eaten up resources for so long.

Agree but MPs, unless they are the Home Sec should not be interfering in police matters. He caved in, a bit like Heads of schools do to the baying antisemitic mobs. Time after time after time. Successive governments created this mess.

Bit like the Notting Hill Carnival. All of this is in the name of diversity, except it's gone way too far. When there is a history of violence, you stamp it out, not allow it to flourish.

I think we can all agree that banning the fans was the right decision, but that the mendacity and naivety employed to reach it, was shameful.

Nope, we are most certainly not all agreed. Please don't speak on my behalf

Or mine @mouthpipette

Speak for yourself as I certainly don't agree that banning the fans was the right decision.

A strong police presence and coming down hard on any antisocial behaviour from fans of either side would have been the right decision.

mids2019 · 17/01/2026 07:45

Add this to the Jewish MP banned from a school recently and there is definitely a picture building here.....

The fact that the WM chief constable was allowed to retire rather than being sacked is deeply problematic. It casts a deep shadow over his boss, the police and crime commissioner. (I think Labour has abolished this role so he’ll be out of a job himself when this tenure ends.)

Police and Crime Commissioner, it's like something about of Batsman ffs. Seriously policing is certainly as fictitious.

caringcarer · 17/01/2026 08:56

You are correct the locals around Aston seem to majority Muslim and they stand in groups of about 8 on the bridge waving their Palestinian flags and shouting anti-Semitic chants at cars as they go by. I saw they had a death to all Jews placard last weekend. They should be arrested as inviting violence with anti-Semitism but they won't be because the police are afraid of them and the sheer numbers of Muslims in and around Aston. The police had no evidence of violence by the Israeli fans in Aston. They should police by evidence not fear. The alternative should have been match played behind closed doors with no fans at all.

I agree he should have been sacked. The crime commissioner should have sacked him but didn't so now he should be sacked.

@1dayatatime I just read that too. Heartbreaking. I think it demonstrates very clearly how 'antizionism' isnt neutral, as people try to make out it is. The comments are horrific, there is absolutely no empathy. And of course its a 'progressive' area full of people for whom being antiracist is part of their identity

Kingscallops · 17/01/2026 10:53

Thing is, there on posters on here who share those views. These are the people chanting shame on you at the government and people using Israeli merchandise. Pathetically hypocritical cowards.

I don't see them as pathetic cowards, I see them as a combination of outright plain old anti semetics (but let's use the cover word of "anti zionists") plus the left wing liberal useful idiots, many of which will in time transition into to outright anti semetics as well.

Also it may start with hating the Jews but it never stops there, tomorrow it will be other groups and other religions (Hindus, Sikhs and Christians).

Lastly it may have started with Bradford but today its Birmingham and Bristol that are anti semetic and it won't stop there either.

I agree. There are infidels who know what's coming and infidels who have no idea. I hate the word infidels but it is useful in illustrating how useful idiots are precipitating their own fate.
