App to boycott Israeli goods

Everexpanding · 14/09/2025 10:49

the “No Thanks” app, which first appeared almost two years ago carrying a large list of companies and brands consumers might consider boycotting because of Israeli links.
The app has become a key tool for the BDS movement that targets Israel economically for the actions of its government and its military in Gaza.
Along with a list of companies and brands to boycott, the app allows users to scan barcodes to find out more about the relationship particular products have with Israel.

Yes I wondered too….

Did you miss the fact that state imposed economic sanctions by the UK and many other countries are already placed on Russia, Iran and many other countries for their human rights violations?

Is this actual genocide the same as the actual famine that thankfully doesn't seem to have materialised or I'm sure we would have seen evidence of it by now.

Strange how everyone's gone very quiet on that.

Also very quiet on the real genocide and famine in Sudan.

Did you not see that over 400 people have died of famine already? 3 in just the last day.

TulipLavender · 16/09/2025 22:57

Over 30 high profile Israelis signed an open letter back in July asking for crippling sanctions to be placed on Israel to stop the starvation of Gaza.

This app is just helping people to influence change that our inept government is too weak and morally bankrupt to effect.

SmugglersHaunt · 16/09/2025 23:25

Is there a current boycott against:
Chinese goods and businesses
Saudi goods and businesses
Sudanese goods and businesses
Russian goods and businesses
Syrian goods and businesses

Plus boycotts against all the other countries engaged in conflicts currently happening around the world where people are being bombed, shot, raped, displaced and have their lives ruined in far greater numbers than what’s happening in Gaza?

No? Thought not. Just against the Jews then?
What a surprise.

You are surprised that people don't want to fund the Israeli governments genocidal campaign? Do you want to fund genocides is that why you are surprised that others don't or what is your thinking on that?

On this thread it’s just against Israel
If you aren’t sure about other countries or more concerned about them I’m sure there are ways to find out. You won’t find that information on here though
The thread title is your clue

There are literally hundreds of boycotts for many many reasons.

Incidentally, conflating Israel with Jewish people seems pretty anti-semitic to me ...

Is there one for brands with Chinese links, after their genocide of Uyghur Muslims?

How about one for brands with ties to Iran after their funding of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis?

Or one for brands with ties to the UAE after they happily transfer weapons to Sudan after the recent genocide there?

Or one for brands with ties to Russia?

Or is it only Jews we hold to account?

I love this post
Activism is so selective. The attempt to destroy Israel's trade may hit them and British businesses.too..No Brit has been asked if he wants his job sacrificed for Palestine. And with all the other places in the world where horrors.are happening, why is Israel being singled out?

Perhaps all the nations of the world should immediately cease trading.with everyone else and live in isolation

ThreeDeafMice · 17/09/2025 03:26

One could use this app to support Israeli businesses if one was so minded, no? Look for products the app disapproves of, and choose to buy them?

A piece from Jewish Voices for Labour calling for a boycott

World public opinion has been reshaped, ears are open and voices are at last being heard. But we must be under no illusions. Israel still has many assets, including friends in positions of strategic influence. It will deploy these in an attempt to blunt or undermine the current clarity, and we can expect ‘antisemitism’ to be part of the counter-attack. That is why we need to have clear Jewish voices, of individuals and of organisations, saying loud and clear, that it is a mitzvah (a blessing) to argue for and to practice boycott.
Back in the first heyday of the BDS movement there was an active group in the UK called Jews for Boycotting Israeli Goods. Its motto was its kosher to boycott Israeli goods. But of course boycott now covers much more than ‘goods’. Academic and cultural boycott are centre stage too, as are the campaigns against arms exports, to get universities in particular to divest from Israel, and so many more. So we need a new title, but most of all we need a strong Jewish voice putting the case for BDS as an expression not of Jew-hatred but of Jewish values.

I find it very hard to respect a supposedly Jewish organisation putting forward an argument that BDS is an expression of Jewish values when they are so far removed from Judaism that they make such an unbelievably basic error regarding the meaning/translation of mitzva. A bracha is a blessing a mitzva is a commandment. This is primary school Jewish knowledge for Jews. And yet they claim they can represent Jewish values?

as far as it goes, I’m not against people not buying or using Israeli goods, that’s their personal choice, and it’s at least coherent. When it spreads to Jewish owned businesses, or Israeli expat owned businesses (ie no taxes paid to Israel), then you’re in murky water.

It sounds like an app to assist me in making informed buying choices.

Exactly what I was thinking.

But what makes you think Israel is being singled out? I mean this particular app sure but the creator is a Palestinian who has lost 2 family members because of the Israeli regime, that's why he made this app to boycott Israel.

Did the Russian boycott pass you by completely? Due to pressure over 1000 brands curtailed their operations in Russia.

There was a lot of talk of boycotting US goods recently, Canada went in hard with that but Europeans also have taken part.

There is an app called good on you that helps people make ethical choices when purchasing fashion and beauty.

Boycotts happen all of the time on local, national and international levels for a myriad of reasons. That people here don't seem attuned to them is concerning to be honest. I thought that most people were leaning in some way towards ethical consumption at this point.

Gloriia · 17/09/2025 07:56

'that's why he made this app to boycott Israel'

Does the app list all Israeli business or only Jewish ones does anyone know. Does he also list Arab/Muslim Israeli businesses?

It's irrelevant to a boycott. The aim of the boycott is to (a) ensure that no part of the money we pay for goods and services ends up in the Israeli tax system and thereby funding genocide. (b) To put economic pressure on Israeli businesses and citizens, In order for them to push for regime change in their country, and/or or to stop committing genocide. (c) To mark our objection to this genocide in one of the only ways we can.

As I said up thread, none of those boycotts had the aim of wiping the country off the map, as per this apps developer.
He would like to see 'Israelis' go back where they came from. Perhaps there are many people who sympathise with that, I've heard a few.
Personally I'm all for co-existence, and a 2state solution. I think a 1state solution now would be a bloodbath like Syria, and a few other places in the middle east that are conveniently ignored..but I am a random mnetter not a world leader.

I think it’s a relevant question to ask regarding this boycott, as were the app to exclude only businesses owned by Israeli Jews, that would expose quite a telling bias.
I am not suggesting that the app just lists Jewish owned Israeli companies, I haven’t looked into it so I genuinely have no idea, but I do think it’s a valid question.

You think an app can wipe a nuclear power off the map? People are just being daft now. The Israeli government are actually genocidal and committing genocide as found by the UN and all major NGOs. That is the concern here, not an app that suggests boycotts wiping a nuclear power off the map.

You can be 'all for a 2 state solution' as much as you want but Netanyahu is not just last Thursday he said “We are going to fulfil our promise that there will be no Palestinian state. This place belongs to us." and they are creating a 'bloodbath' as you put it to make that happen.

Exactly. A pp got all snippy that Israelis are 'neither a race, religion nor ethnicity', well Jews are certainly an ethnicity and a religion so to boycott only a certian religion would be discrimination.

Maybe I'm wrong and all Israeli businesses are targeted even the Muslim isreali businesses but those banging away on this man's app, do you even know?

God, this old trope again...you do know that there are sanctions in place for a nice number of countries including Russia, who has been kicked out of all cultural and sporting events and has had its imports and exports curtailed. I pray that Israel joins them soon.

Ah yes Russia the country that retaliated to the slaughter of hundreds of innocent people and the abduction, rape and torture of more?

Oh no hang on I'm mistaken! Russia the country who invaded another unprovoked? It's no wonder they had sanctions imposed now is it?

If gazan civilians are innocent then so are Israelis. Some of you need to be a bit more consistent in your views.
