I'm an Orthodox Christian. It has just occurred to me that we might lose all of our sacred places in the Holy Land if this hostility by israel continues.

Yes, but he's divine in Christianity, which is blasphemous in Judaism and Islam, I'd absolutely love to think they're all actually worshipping the same God ( although, shit, the irony ) but can't make the creeds fit.
Interesting that you think otherwise though, I'd be keen to hear more why?

Because I see the schisms as evolution of faiths, driven either by self questioning believers like Martin Luther or by those with desire for power and it's subsequent rewards.

I'm not a fan of weaponising religion for war and power, but I see great things done with co-ordinated faith for communities. It depends who's leading the way and how convinced their followers are.

I didn't know about this. I came across it on Instagram. I'm shocked and saddened.

Instagram. Tiktok, X. No wonder.

Oh no, The Jerusalem Post are writing about it too, as are numerous other perfectly legitimate news outlets.

Are people seriously attempting to dismiss this as fake news or merely being sneery towards Instagram etc.?

Israeli Jews accused by clerics of attacking Christian sites in W. Bank | The Jerusalem Post

Fears over violence were pushing Christians to leave the West Bank, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Roman Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem since 2020, said.

They're panicking, American Christian Evangelicals are one of, if not the largest supporters of Israel approx 30 million+. Unfortunately the Scofield Bible which deliberately misrepresents scripture has been wholly accepted by this group as the truth.

Leading to millions of people like Senator Ted Cruz who said:

"As a Christian, growing up in Sunday school, I was taught from the Bible that those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed. I want to be on the blessing side of things,” [an apparent reference to Genesis 12:3.]

And

“Biblically, we are commanded to support Israel."

Losing this base would be extremely detrimental.

On the matter of the same God, we have what is the example of God in Jesus who said that who had seen Him had seen the Father. Now He had to be speaking of the God the Jews worshipped because nothing else makes sense of that. He was a Jew and went to the Temple to worship there. As for Islam, they believe they worship the same God, the Compassionate, the Merciful, and we can assess their way of life, they way they speak of God by measuring against Jesus. Do they help the poor, the sick, and so on? Yes they do. Don't just judge by the few psychopathic killers - if you do, you have to do the same for Christian lynch mobs over the centuries as well. Some of them killing others who thought they were Christians, because they didn't feel the same about the words of the various creeds.
And WWJD? Well, he didn't withhold from helping people according to belief. Think the Roman centurion who begged help for his slave. The nearest he would have come in belief would be to Mithras, if he wasn't a follower of someone more wildly pagan and non-existent. He didn't ask for the articles of belief of the man whose friends let him down through the roof for healing. (Though of course you could argue that their faith in Him was shown by their actions.)
I actually have more difficulty believing that I share belief in the one and only God with some of those who define their belief by the creed, if they then go on to suggest that we drown the migrants in small boats, or in the past, condemn poor women and children to the Magdalen Laundries. By their fruits you shall know them.

Patriarchs and heads of churches jpined together to show solidarity.

Thelmaandloulou · 17/07/2025 16:21

How do you bomb a church by mistake? I don't accept that excuse.

I don't know considering it was hit by a tank you would think a church was big enough they would see it and know what it was. Catholic churches tend to be pretty distinctive.

The priest that spoke with the late Pope was injured in the attack.

smallglassbottle · 17/07/2025 18:39

How awful 😢 and yet more mealy mouthed rubbish from the idf. Perhaps they were inspired to do this by the attack on the West Bank church.

Perhaps Christians are members of hamas now! Along with women, toddlers, newborns etc.

I did read that three people had died in the IDF attack on the church. Why are the IDF constantly killing Palestinians by mistake? Just recently they killed children waiting for water and now attacking a church.

Martymcfly24 · 17/07/2025 19:41

In a social media post, Israel claimed it “never targets churches or religious sites and regrets any harm to a religious site or to uninvolved civilians”.

But yet by Feb 2025 Israel has destroyed 79% of the mosques in Gaza and 3 churches including Church of Saint Porphyrius one of the oldest churches in the world.

So either it's crap at identifying buildings or blatantly lying.

MissyB1 · 17/07/2025 19:58

So they hate Catholics too, what a bloody surprise. We all know this was no mistake, this was very deliberate.

Pressure from Trump to apologise is the only reason they apologised for this attack, and not all the others.

It was a "sorry not sorry " half assed apology.

The attack is wrong but surely the point of then post was to try and undermine support for Israel and Christians are a very small minority amongst Palestinians and within the West bank and as a have more to worry about with Islamist oppressio.

The reality is that Israel is backed by a strongly Christian country, the US so I really do not see some agenda against Christians. Also the narrative of bad Jews attacking good Christians was a narrative used to pretty horrible effect by a certain German party in the past........

It’s very confusing to know when a criticism is deemed legitimate or if it’s deemed political by the sheer fact that it occurs in Israel.

Can’t we agree that these are violent actions of extremists and should be condemned.

Its blatant lying. They are laughing at the world while they ignore the rules of warfare to exterminate Gazans.

Absolutely agree.

Fascinating though how thousands of Muslims can be murdered but 3 Catholics triggers a call from Trump (I am Catholic btw) and a Oops we made another mistake statement from Netanyahu.

"Every innocent life lost is a tragedy" is him laughing at the world .

I made this very points months ago on similar threads when Christian hospitals were attacked and bombed.
Yes, apparently Hamas were hiding there too (among other choice statements that I won't repeat).
Honestly I think many US evangelical Christians don't see Arab Christians as real Christians (or real people actually): Catholic, Maronite, Orthodox it doesn't matter. This is racism but also sectarianism.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/07/2025 12:33

They dont. They're death cult Christians funding the settlers in order to bring about the End Times.

With the ironic thing being that Arab Christians in the Levant are descendants of the people who lived there in Biblical times. One of the last villages to speak Aramaic is in Syria.

YourOnMute · 18/07/2025 15:49

Yes, I know it.
(Also 🙄when I read about how the "Palestinian supporters" are ignorant of the region, westerners just falling for the latest protest etc. Society is a lot diverse than that).

Quite a lot of info and pictures there. Looks like the IDF were aiming for a neighbouring building and the church suffered shrapnel damage. It was NOT a direct hit.

How horrific that civilians are caught up in a such close proximity to combatants in a densely populated urban war zone.

Why haven’t they been given the option of being evacuated to neighbouring safe countries as in any other war do you think?

That’s good that the church did not suffer a direct hit @Anonimummy and not too much damage
