This is a brilliant article.

This will be taught in schools one day and our grandkids will ask us but what did you do when you knew this was happening?

What did you do during the genocide in Gaza? | Arwa Mahdawi

When future generations read about Gaza with horror and wonder how we allowed a livestreamed genocide to happen, what will you say?

@hayfeverforever your posts are very distasteful to be honest 🥺
Just imagine for a moment that you swapped lives with a starving civilian in a war-ravaged part of the world. Imagine then how you'd feel if you thought well-fed westerners made light of it by advertising their luxury consumerism. If you don't feel broken by the situation in Gaza (which I don't understand at all) that's up to you. But, at least have the common decency to exercise some discretion please.

Oh I do feel sad for the children it’s awful, I have kids myself. But let’s face it they’ve been at war for decades and they’ll be at war long after I’m gone, it’s just one of those things sadly.
i just find it incredibly cringe that Margaret in the Lake District thinks that writing an angry letter to her mp is going to solve world peace and we’ll all live in harmony.

Lobbying TD's here in Ireland has led to them passing a bill today that will ban imports from Israel. Hopefully soon it will extend to services also so the lobbying continues .

I agree. I found this distasteful. To resurrect the thread to let us all know this. Imagine if a child in Gaza read your comment. I'm sure I'll get accused of virtue signalling for that comment though.

@fixingmylife you're not virtue signalling at all. You're being a normal human being expressing natural compassion.
I think the allegation of virtue signalling is used on threads like this to shut people down unfortunately.

Yes, I know that. I said it to try to prove the point that I found the comments very distasteful. We can't imagine what a child in Gaza must feel. That was the point, in order to try to give some perspective on the issue and obviously to try to counter a goady post.

Virtual signalling is exactly what it is. It’s the very same as filming yourself giving to the homeless and posting on sm. useless

fixingmylife · 24/06/2025 20:37

This thread was originally a space where people shared small things they were doing in the face of an unbearable situation — not to show off, but to feel less powerless, and maybe to encourage each other.
Resurrecting it to brag about concerts and cars — just to mock those trying to help — feels deliberately unkind. If you think compassion is “virtue signalling,” that says more about your worldview than it does about anyone here.
Personally, I’d still rather be someone who tries to care than someone who sneers at the effort.

Martymcfly24 · 24/06/2025 20:41

I wouldn't be a bit concerned about being accused of virtue signalling. Considering the definition is "an attempt to show other people that you are a good person, for example by expressing opinions that will be acceptable to them, especially on social media"...and this is an anonymous forum where no one knows who anyone is beyond a username that can be changed frequently it's a quite hollow accusation.

Question for @hayfeverforever, whose posts I also find extremely distasteful. Would you air these views in real life, or are you emboldened by being anonymous on MN?Because I'd imagine the majority of people would be quite disgusted by your selfish viewpoint.

The homeless are still being helped by this regardless of the motives of the person filming and that’s what counts in the long run

If you want to help get yourself to Gaza girl and get stuck in.

Yes I would air these views in real life. I don’t hide behind a screen and anonymity.

Vice signalling is the act of publicly expressing support for views or behaviors that are generally considered negative, immoral, or controversial, not for genuine belief, but to appear tough, rebellious, or contrarian, often for social or political capital.

veiledsentiments · 24/06/2025 21:40

Are you quite as vile to your own children? Disgusting.
