The UK, France and Canada threaten Israel

"The leaders of Britain, France, and Canada on Monday threatened action against Israel if it does not stop a renewed military offensive in Gaza and lift aid restrictions"

"We have always supported Israel's right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate," the three Western leaders said in the joint statement, adding that they will not stand by while Netanyahu's government pursues "these egregious actions."

My personal opinion is once again it is too little, too late. However I'm interested to hear opinions on what exactly this threatening action would consist of?

What has caused these governments to issue such a statement now and not before? The blockade of aid has been ongoing for more than two months. Why didn't they say take further action earlier?

Lastly, will this statement have any effect on the Netanyahu extremist government? Or will they brush it off as they usually do? I'm not sure as these are three powerful allies who have so far been quite wishy washy with their condemnation.

Germans in 2025 have nothing to feel guilty about (though they do: we hosted German students for several years. Pretty much all of them, 16 and 17 year olds, had apologised about the war and the holocaust within an hour or so of arriving with us. It’s drummed into them. Ridiculous.)

How long are they to be held accountable for the actions of their forebears?

Wow that really is riddiculous. I’ve heard of that happening with Germans although I’ve never seen it myself.

I doubt you see Belgians for example, apologising to anyone for King Leopold's reign upon meeting them.

(Belgium/Leopold is just one example there are plenty other atrocities .)

@ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend I just think it's more feasible that Israel are delaying distribution out of security concerns than that "they don't care if people die" as @kirinm suggested.

Israel is at war with Hamas not the civilians of Gaza, though many civilians have been killed as a direct result of this war.

Maybe I do like to give Israel the benefit of the doubt as you suggest but I genuinely expect the aid will start to be distributed today.

This to me is delusional

This to me is delusional

Of course it is. A quote from a democratically elected Israeli minister from last year. This was when Biden was in charge and was tougher on forced starvation than Trump. Members of the elected government calling starvation 'justified and moral' but sure they are actually really troubled by mass starvation, they just want everyone to be safe.

"We can't, in the current global reality, manage a war. Nobody will let us cause two million civilians to die of hunger even though it might be justified and moral."

Whatsinanamehey · 21/05/2025 14:52

A group of diplomats were visiting Jenin in the west bank to see the destruction caused first hand when the IDF fired warning shots. This really isn't instilling any confidence in the EU who are fuming as many diplomats from EU countries were present.

Which minister was that? If you’re going to directly quote someone, surely you’d give their name?

Video (of course the IDF are currently investigating and will likely find themselves innocent).

This to me is delusional

Anyone would think Hamas has not been widely documented stealing aid and killing civilians who try to take it.

It’s quite fascinating to me that people who blatantly deny the truth, or claim ignorance, call others delusional.

Theft of aid trucks sends prices soaring in central Gaza

The United Nations said armed men stole food and other aid from 98 trucks, the largest incident of its kind since the start of the war.

Why on earth did they deviate from the agreed route in an active combat zone? Something stinks.

Not sure what the IDF has to apologise for actually but very good of them to.

Firstly, how do you know how far they deviated or the circumstances they deviated under?

Secondly, normal democratic countries would just remind the diplomats of the route, not try and traumatise them by having their armed soldiers fire crazily in the air near them.

The EU have reacted to this non apology after the IDF called this serious incident a 'inconvenience' and have said they will respond appropriately in time.

I wonder is this behaviour common on the streets of Israel or is just in Palestine that instead of talking to people like humans they fire randomly in their vicinity to try and order them around? I just can't imagine treating people that way, you wouldn't treat cattle like that. Purposefully terrifying people to make them do what you want. Shameful.

I'm sure they know perfectly well it's an opposition minister so about as surprising as a Tory minister criticising a Labour one or vice versa.

Is it? I don't know how it works over there. Are finance ministers usually opposition ministers then? Is it not Netanyahu who appoints these ministers? That you don't find a government minister talking about it being moral to stave civillians surprising is a you issue, most people would be shocked to hear that come out of the mouths of their elected representatives.

Israels whole 'diplomatic' system is a mystery to me I must say. If our finance minister spoke about it being moral to starve people or spoke about cleansing people from an area or didn't declare his income from a rental property he would be ousted. In Israel nothing happens, you can say whatever disgusting things you like and there are no consequences. So I can't say I'm fully briefed on their form of democracy, it's very far from what I'm used to.

It's so easy to Google. You do know what being in opposition means I take it? It is basically your job to criticise the government in power.

Israeli opposition leader criticises killing ‘children as a hobby’

Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan criticised the government at a press conference on Tuesday.

https://www.aljazeera.com/program/newsfeed/2025/5/20/israeli-opposition-leader-criticises-killing-children-as-a

Twiglets1 · 21/05/2025 16:48

Hours after his original comments, Golan sought to defend himself from the criticism, praising IDF fighters as “heroes” fighting on behalf of a “corrupt” government.

“The meaning of my words was clear: This war is the realization of the fantasies of [far-right minister Itamar] Ben Gvir and [Bezalel] Smotrich and if we allow them to put this into action, we will become a pariah state,” Golan wrote on X. “It is time for us to have a backbone of hardened steel. We must stand up for our values as a Zionist, Jewish and democratic state.”

He added: “IDF fighters are heroes; government ministers are corrupt. The IDF is ethical, and the people are upright; the government is crooked. The war must be ended, the hostages returned, and Israel rehabilitated.”

The civillians in Gaza he thinks it is moral to starve and cleanse aren't the government in power Twiglets. He wasnt criticising the government in power he was talking about his desire to commit mass murder.

Netanyahu doesn't seem to think he is being criticised either On social media on Monday, Netanyahu praised that statement, saying that Smotrich was “speaking the truth” <<this is on Smotrichs desire to ethnically cleanse. But yes keep on pretending that Israel are really concerned about people starving to death before they 'cleanse' them.

Similarly to Smotrich, Netanyahu pledged that Israel’s goal is to “take control of all” of Gaza. “We will not give up. But in order to succeed, we must act in a way that cannot be stopped,” he said. This just screams opposition to Smotrich doesn't it. Netanyahu clearly just wants to keep everyone safe, strange how governments all over the world that are speaking up about this can't see that.

Your post needs editing to make sense but do you agree with his statement that "IDF fighters are heroes" or that "the IDF is ethical"?

Anyone that doesn't believe that should stop mentioning him just because he said one thing you do like.

They pissed a lot of countries off.

I wouldn't bother with that Hasbara budget this year when you are taking pot shots at diplomatic tours .

Yup, terrible investment in Hasbara, talk about showing your arse!

The IDF couldn't even restrain themselves long enough to pretend that they're a normal, decent military. Smacks of impotent rage and trying to bully and pressure the diplomats and prove that they're hard and in control.

I'm so glad that no one was hurt, the countries affected need to take concrete action and always remember poor Count Bernadotte who was assassinated in 1948 by an Israeli terrorist group one of which , Yitzhak Shamir becoming a future Israeli prime minister.

Well that would be handy wouldn't it. It would certainly make your theory that the Israeli government are just devastated at the starving people and just want people to be safe and that's why they are withholding aid more believable if we just ignored everything they are telling us about wanting to ethnically cleanse Gaza.

Netanyahu has given a press conference this evening. As reported by Sky News:

Benjamin Netanyahu has been answering questions at his news conference in Jerusalem.
Asked about aid reaching Palestinians in Gaza and Israel's security checks slowing trucks down, he says of Hamas: "They control Gaza because they can loot."
"We will do whatever it takes to complete the war," he adds.
The Israeli prime minister suggests those who argue the war should end before Hamas has been defeated are proposing "madness".
Of criticism from the likes of the UK and France of Israel's continuing strikes and military activity in Gaza, Netanyahu says these same countries had previously encouraged Israel to "finish the war" in Gaza.
But he does suggest Israel will try to supply more aid.
