The UK, France and Canada threaten Israel

"The leaders of Britain, France, and Canada on Monday threatened action against Israel if it does not stop a renewed military offensive in Gaza and lift aid restrictions"

"We have always supported Israel's right to defend Israelis against terrorism. But this escalation is wholly disproportionate," the three Western leaders said in the joint statement, adding that they will not stand by while Netanyahu's government pursues "these egregious actions."

My personal opinion is once again it is too little, too late. However I'm interested to hear opinions on what exactly this threatening action would consist of?

What has caused these governments to issue such a statement now and not before? The blockade of aid has been ongoing for more than two months. Why didn't they say take further action earlier?

Lastly, will this statement have any effect on the Netanyahu extremist government? Or will they brush it off as they usually do? I'm not sure as these are three powerful allies who have so far been quite wishy washy with their condemnation.

He's stark raving mad! I have just seen he said one of the conditions to end the war is for the Palestinians to accept Trump's Plan. No wonder the ceasefire isn't getting anywhere. It's ludicrous!

As is quite typical, your post makes little sense to me.

It's also typical that you fail to answer a direct question - in this case Do you agree with his statement that "IDF fighters are heroes"

Edited

I thought it was quite clear personally. You think the Israeli government care about the people they are starving. You think the reason they are twatting about with aid is for 'safety'. If we discount everything Israeli government ministers have said about wanting to ethnically cleanse Gaza then your way of thinking may be plausible. Therefore it would work well for your argument if we all just ignored the multiple genocidal statements from the Israeli government. That isn't something I or many governments around the world are willing to do. When we hear someone say they want to commit ethnic cleansing and then they starve people of food and medicine we believe that they do in fact want to commit cleansing. The actions here show to most of us that they mean what they say.

I believe that he believes the IDF Soldiers are heroes. After all they are carrying out his wishes to starve and ethnically cleanse. Of course that would make them heroes to him.

I don't agree with his statement that it is moral to starve people either. It doesn't mean I don't think he means what he is saying.

I hope that is clearer for you.

Netanyahu: The fledgling Operation Gideon’s Chariots — the expanded operation in Gaza — is meant to “complete the war, the work” in Gaza

He is openly and clearly stating that one of the objectives of the war is to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians from Gaza. How can anyone still defend Israel??

What the actual fuck! Talk about sticking up two fingers at our government after all they have done.

He dismissed yesterday's strong words from the UK government, saying it was "a shame that Britain, instead of imposing sanctions on Hamas, imposes sanctions on a woman [settler leader Daniella Weiss]." He also accused the British government and others of coming "under pressure from Islamic minorities" in their own countries.

No one can defend him. This goes far beyond stopping hamas. This is ethnic cleansing. Nothing else.

Odras · 21/05/2025 19:36

@Twiglets1 well I can’t get any pleasure out of saying I told you so. I wish I could be optimistic.

I wonder what will happen now. Between these the diplomats and the “warning shots” , the UN saying that 14,000 babies would die, and the rhetoric from Netanyahu and others. It seems countries will be forced to do something beyond mild actions and strong words.

Also this talk that Israel has plans to attack nuclear facilities in Iran.

ssd · 21/05/2025 19:36

He obviously feels safe with trump behind him

And he is openly and unashamedly telling the world. It's like he is challenging the countries who criticise him that I don't care what you say, I am going to carry out war crimes, let's see what you can even do about it.

Ooh. He's getting some good PR (probably from Trump) advice .. great way to appeal to the Daily Mail (who are rabidly pro Israel) cohort by blaming it on the " Islamic minorities" . Appeal to the fear.
Nicely played Netanyahu.

Whatsinanamehey · 21/05/2025 19:41

I hope all those who are insisting that it's just a war against Hamas can finally see the reality for themselves. If they still can't then nothing will at this point.

If they are going to obliterate all of gaza, whats going to happen to the hostages,?
They must be terrified too.

Yes it's a rare situation where I wish I was right and everyone else does too!

The belief that the UN estimated 14,000 babies would die though... that has been debunked. And I hope we're all pleased about that too.

A widely reported claim that 14,000 babies in Gaza could die within 48 hours has been corrected by the UN, which says the figure refers to potential deaths over the next year.

The statement, aired on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and repeated across national media and in Parliament, was later clarified by the BBC as a misrepresentation of a humanitarian report projecting malnutrition cases in children aged six month to five years over a 12-month period.

The UN's humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher claimed on Monday morning that thousands of babies could die in Gaza in the subsequent two days if Israel did not immediately let aid in, apparently based on a report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Partnership.

However, a look at the IPC report reveals that the figure refers to the number of children at risk of “severe malnutrition” by March next year, rather than by the end of the week. The number is a projection and would not take into account any increase in the supply of aid between now and then.

Later the same day, buried in a story about how aid in Gaza has yet to reach the population, BBC News issued a correction to Fletcher’s claim. A separate UN official also declined to repeat the claim and made the correction in a press briefing.

If hey starve 14000 babies to death then I think it’s time it was stopped. It’s a war on decency and humanity.

Yet we always hear on these threads by the supporters of Israel on how the Palestinians in Israel (which is largely Muslim) are treated so nicely and fairly there. They must be feeling pretty shit right now.

How can someone who can never give a single speech without bringing up anti-semitism, blatantly make anti-Muslim remarks like this?

That report is scary 71000 cases of acute malnutrition in children under 59 months in the next year.17,000 malnutrition in
pregnant and breastfeeding women.
There are massive long term implications of malnutrition in childhood that will last throughout their whole lives.

It's a very different thing to say 14,000 babies in Gaza could die within 48 hours to saying the figure refers to the number of children at risk of “severe malnutrition” by March next year and The number is a projection and would not take into account any increase in the supply of aid between now and then.

The British doctor who was interviewed said young children that they are treating are struggling to fight off even minor infections because of how malnourished and weak they are.

That's very frightening because the odds are stacked against them now surviving even the simplest of illnesses and injuries due to malnutrition and lack of appropriate medical supplies .

Twiglets1 · 21/05/2025 20:44

Reported by the BBC this evening: Throughout the day, all eyes were on whether aid supplies already delivered near the main Gaza crossing would start being distributed among Gazans.

Late this evening, the World Food Programme said the movement of supplies was under way but that there'd been no aid distribution yet. Israel's military sent a late update that 100 trucks carrying flour, baby food and medical equipment had been transferred from Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza.

Twiglets1 · 21/05/2025 20:54

Also in BBC report: Why have there been delays to aid distribution in Gaza?

Antoine Renard, a senior World Food Programme official, tells the BBC that problems with aid distribution in Gaza arose because the IDF wanted trucks to move inside Gaza along a route that aid agencies considered to be dangerous and where they could be at risk of attack by desperately hungry civilians and armed criminal gangs.

“At market prices in Gaza right now,” says Renard, “each truck full of flour is worth around U$400,000”. What is needed, to make sure the trucks reach the right areas, is “hundreds of trucks daily" travelling along a safe route to warehouses, as happened in the previous ceasefire, he says.
